Horror Dexter - Part 6

I think overall Dexter had more high spots than not. I was not particularly disappointed with the finale. Except with the realisation of knowing that the series was now ending of course.

Certainly I don't feel I have wasted any of my life watching it...

Dexter's character had a pretty good arc over those 8 seasons.

Yes, especially when Dexter came full-circle by becoming a silent lumberjack in some cold northern state.

He had an arc. I wouldn't call it good though.

I think it's a bit narrow-sighted, to be totally honest, to turn your hate onto the whole of a series just because of a bad finale season

I wasn't talking with that in mind, actually. But more about 'would you recommend the series to someone?'.

I would definitely say he had a good arc overall. It wasn't perfect or as smooth as it could've been, but his evolution to asocial monster to human was the highlight of the series.

Yeah, I would recommend it, too. I'd probably advise to tamper expectations after the first two seasons.

No. Up until the end of season 4, I would have wholeheartedly. But childish as it may be, Dexter's terrible later seasons tainted the whole for me. I just can't look at it the same way, even the earlier good seasons.

i liked the Trinity Killer season. that had a rewarding conclusion. it's not a problem for me to pretend that it ended there.

I am back to this discussion now. The final season was just released here in Australia on DVD a few days ago. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading what others have said during the course of this series and I am really happy that I didn't spoil it for myself by trying to find the final happenings!

Some said that he now appears to be in 'a northern state.' Anyone seeing the possibility that he could run into his old love from Minnesota, Lumen Pierce? Is he now 'cured' and ready to begin another phase of his life?

Like I said, I am looking forward to catching up, however belatedly!

Well, you probably won't be to happy to discuss it since most of what was said was negative lol. But actually, the ending implied the opposite; the lack of voice over was meant to say how empty he'd become. Dexter turned into a self recluse, living on basic motor functions and just sort of being there.

Thanks Tron Bonne.

Or, one could be an optimist and think that the voice over was the 'dark passenger' speaking, and now Dexter is finding out that now he no longer has those urges to have to kill.

That's a bit selfish. Why not recommend the first season at least and let th decide for themselves?

Okay, the series had some glaring plot holes. The biggest in the final series was Hannah not trying to disguise herself when her picture had been all over the media as a top fugitive. I mean, she is drop-dead gorgeous and 95% of men would certainly look twice and try to look a third time if she was spotted in public. So, to me anyway, this distracted me greatly from the plot.

I really believe also that Dexter's dark passenger had left him by the time that he kills Oliver Saxon. This was not his inner need working in him anymore, just a simple act of revenge. No madness here. His demons had no part in this execution.

And the end, with the lumberjack scene, yes Dexter is a shell still waiting to see if his dark entity has completely gone so that he can if he wants return to society somewhere and start again. The last thing that he wants is to reinsert himself into the life of his son and Hannah if he is still 'sick.'

Or could Dexter still be a character who can be used to exact revenge on the evil men in the world without being driven to do it by dark urges? Could that be an interesting idea for a follow up series? Probably not - that would just be another series that has plots that have already been used.

Did anyone else notice Oliver Saxon appears to be in that new KMart jingle bells commercial? Guess being the final Dexter big bad didn't do much for his career

So, after seeing it available on Netflix (and some longstanding interest), I decided to binge watch me some Dexter. I was mildly annoyed to see it was only the first 4 seasons available, given that it's so much more convenient to sit on my ass and watch through PS3 than turning to housed streams. In retrospect, my sloth should have won out and I should have just stopped watching after Season 4.

Pretty much everything I'd want to gripe about has been covered over the last few pages, so no need for me to get my jabs in after the fact. Still, ****ing hell, this thing dropped off sharply.

I honestly thought season 7 was a strong season. It made me optimistic for season 8, but alas.

Thinking about it, I wonder if maybe they'd decided to make the 7th season the final one and done a split like Breaking Bad would've potentially helped. It would've forced a tighter approach, and I think they could've avoided one of what I thought was the biggest issues in trying to introduce so much new stuff that bogged down a lot of the narrative. I don't know, it may not have mattered, but I do wonder if that would've helped.

seasons 5, 6, and 7 would have been perfectly fine as interim/filler seasons (much like season 3) had season 8 securely tied up the series in an intelligent and respectful manner.

Nah, season 7 was definitely not a filler season. A lot of stuff happened that was pretty integral; specifically, that was the season that Deb had to struggle with finding out who Dexter was.

True enough on 7. Carpenter and Stevenson do some great work in pushing the story. 6 and 8 are the only entries I'd mark as actually being bad; the latter undercutting some of 7's strength. I broke out into laughter at what was happening on multiple occasions on those seasons... for all the wrong reasons. 3 and 5 are passable.

Stevenson's character was awesome, they wasted an amazing, interesting, three-dimensional villain.

I didn't feel like they wasted Stevenson. He got a lot of time, and his arc got a solid beginning, middle, and end.

What I meant is, why so little time for such a strong character? He should've been a season-long villain, or at least should've stayed longer.
Look at Benjamin Linus from Lost. He was supposed to be only 3 episodes. The writers saw great things in that character, and it was a pivotal piece of the puzzle until the end of the series. They could've done just that with Stevenson, he had a lot of potential.

You make it sound like he was only around for a few episodes. His character, if I recall, did last for most of the season, and what he had was good. They could have used him more, yeah, but I think saying what we got was a waste is a big slight to a good arc.

I'm watching the final season and so far, i'm kinda bored with it.

I think the show peaked at season 4, and I wish seasons 5-8 were compressed into 1 or 2 seasons. I also felt like Quinn was meant to be a one-shot type of character that they somehow just kept. Does anyone agree? Just a vibe I got, and since so many characters come and go, they probably kept Quinn just as a way to stabilize the cast a bit more.

But his character is a total bore.

With Quinn, it seemed more like they had some bigger plans for the character that got scrapped unexpectedly. Kind of like what happened with Luis from season 6 to 7, only instead of killing him off, they kept him ****ting around.
