I feel that Dexter either needs to die or get caught at the end of the series, it just wouldn't be right if he remained free and kept up his killing ways.

Someone close to Dexter needs to find out about him before he dies, assuming that was his fate. It would be very important to see Dexters reaction to that persons reactions.

I think the ideal plot for the final season would be Debra discovering that Dexter is a serial killer, and her reaction to that. If you look at the throughline of the show, Dexter VS Debra really seems like the final, climactic confrontation it's all building up to.

I wanna see Angel or Masuka find out. Angel i think would instantly try to bring him in as sympathetic a way as possible. Masuka I think would say something along the lines of "I always knew there was something up with you" Considering he thinks hes smarter than everyone plus I think hed be the most accepting of it

Once Debra finds out, I'm pretty sure the others will follow suit. So it will be fun to see the reactions and how they handle it if that's where the show decides to go.

I'm thinking Deb finds out, at first she tries to accept it. Then she has the mental break down of what happened with her and the ice truck killer, and things get screwy. She HAS to bring him in.

It would be a heart breaking final.

But here's what I'd do. Have Dexter take his own life. It would save Debra from having to go through hell. It would allow him to be rid of his dark passenger (which I think by this point he'll be well and truly ready to be "normal") and he'll be able to see Rita again.

The show could end with a hint of Harrison becoming his father so to speak...

I dont see that happening. Dexters survival instinct is fierce. I cant see him taking his own life. No matter what. Getting locked up and escaping now thats a different story. Or just him getting locked up and accepting his fate. I honestly dont think even in reality hed get the death penalty. His defense could be solid. If it came to light that Harry recognized Dexters sociopathy and emotional detatchment from everyone around him and how Harry did what he thought was best to channel Dexters urges into killing people who deserved it I think the courts would take pity on him and give him life without parole. Seriously its very apparent that Dexter is sick mentally because of what happened to him as a child and as a result of Harry's training but the biggest part that shows he is a truly deranged is his ritual and total indifference to killing people he feels deserve it. I dont think that warrants a death penalty conviction at all. Plus I think alot of people would be behind Dexter for what he has done. Cops would be praising him all over the place for "taking out the trash."
Of course Im just saying that if this situation was in reality.

I've been rewatching season 1 today and it just makes me miss Rita even more.

I dont know about life without parole, if they had legit evidence that Harry is to "blame" than Dex could get off on insanity plea since he was arguably brainwashed (emphasis on arguable).

One thing is for sure, Dexter would have to be kept in a Supermax prison where he would have no interaction with other prisoners if he was sent to jail. I think that Dexter is to highly functional to get away with an insanity defense even though he clearly is insane.

Yea an insanity plea is truly out of the question for Dex. You have to consider how they evaluate a criminal to ascertain whether or not they are LEGALLY insane. By traditional definition insanity is repeating the same task over and over expecting different results by LEGAL definition it is a person who doesnt understand the difference between right or wrong. Dexter understands what is right and what isnt, he just has a very askew view of what right and wrong are. That is definately not insanity in the courts eyes. Case in point Jeffrey Dahmer who drilled holes in the back of teen males heads trying to labotomize (sp?) them into "sex zombies" amongst many other disturbing things was found guilty. His insanity plea wasnt granted because he actually expressed a tiny level of remorse for his crimes which shows he understood the difference between right and wrong but put simply just couldnt control himself

Well, he is talking to his dead father alot.............

Have you ever saw The Shield. The main character got away with everything he ever did.

At the price of losing his friends and family. Look at Vics face in the final scene it says it all.

Which is just a representation of his subconcious urge to kill. If youve ever noticed when he talks to Harry and other people are around they dont hear him talking to Harry. Its in his head. I thought everybody realized that

exactly, so if we all love Dexter and don't want him to get caught or die, than the final scene has to be somewhat similar...... where Dexter escapes, but at the cost of losing everything... I mean that is almost given

My point is he isnt actually TALKING to Harry. Its an inner monologue or dialogue. Still doesnt matter Dexter does not meet the legal definition of insane plain and simple. This isnt Albert Fish, Ed Gein, or David Berkowitz were talking about.

This is not directed towards the actual Harry conversations, but I read somewhere that his self monologues are sometimes unknowingly expressed out loud. They gave an example in season one (though I forgot what exactly) where Dexter was in a coversation with Doakes, or around him, and he had one of his monologue sarcastic comments or whatever, and Doakes actually responded to it (even though it was supposedly in Dexter's head)

This has nothing to do with what you guys are talking about but after watching season 1 again, I never noticed the subtle hints of a possible Doakes and Debra relationship before.

Yeah I brought that up in here a while ago.

It was a shame to see Doakes die, because I always thought he'd wind up with her. Kind of like how the Batista/Laguerta storyline is playing out.

Except it would have been much more interesting because it would have increased the tension--the closer Doakes got to Deb, the closer he would have gotten to Dexter. But with Laguerta and Batista, they really have nothing better to do than each other; the whole arc just smacks of obligatory contract fulfillment for characters they have no interest in.

You're absolutely right. They should have killed Laguerta in the first season and followed through with how the book ended her character lol.

technically, he didn't frame Doakes........ I'm curious as to what people will say about Dexter killing the innocent (the photographer and Prada's younger brother)

edit: Nevermind, come to think of it, he did frame Doakes in a way, but he honored him by killing the British chick

I think it's more likely for Deb and Quinn to get together, they both share similiaries, like falling for a murderer (Trinity's daughter and the Ice Truck Killer)
