In one of the most shocking TV moments in recent years 'Dexter' writers decided to kill off one of the main characters, Dexter's wife, Rita. Julie Benz who played Rita Morgan on the popular Showtime series has broken her silence about the characters exit from the show.
Fans of the show were shocked after watching the season 4 finale where Dexter found Rita dead in the bathtub seemingly killed by the Trinity killer. "they wanted to do a shocking ending and they really felt that it was the most shocking ending they could have," Benz told Radaronline.
"There are rumors going around, people would like to have me back as a ghost or that it was just a dream. Let me set the record straight, it was not a dream. Trinity killed Rita. No one else did. Dexter didn't kill her. She didn't commit suicide Deb didn't sneak in and do it. The Trinity Killer killed her. And, it's not a dream and as of right now there are no plans of me returning as a ghost."
Benz says that Rita's death came as a shock to her but that she doesn't believe she'll be back for season 5."I don't think it would really work for Rita to return as a ghost at this point I don't want to cheapen the impact of her death."
Fans have concocted many possible ways the story line could go in season 5. Dexter could be a major suspect in the murder of his wife. He'll have to deal with raising 3 children on his own, and how will he deal with his "dark passenger" once Rita is gone?
