I wrote this in another thread, but I thought it could be worthy of its own thread.

Am I the only one who thinks Venom may have stolen some of Harry's thunder? Operating under the assumption that Norman is really the GG, when Harry does turn on Pete and try to kill him. Wouldn't the "best friends fighting" and "brother vs. brother" aspect feel like a rehash of SSM's Venom? Especially considering Harry was depicted as a total tool without exception in this show from the word go and Eddie was the much more likable character at the start of the show (how did that happen?)? Even if that was Harry, we didn't seem too upset because Harry is a complete ******* in this show. On top of that, if Harry ever dons the GG suit again knowing who Peter is...won't he just seem like Venom 2.0?

Which is too bad because Harry Osborn will always be a stronger character than Eddie Brock in all mediums and GG > Venom. Sorry.

I disagree, I think if Harry does become the Goblin again and knowing who Peter really is, he probably won't seem like Venom 2.0. He just is too different for that anyway.

I felt like the eddie peter friendship was stronger than the peter harry friendship in the series.

To be honest, I hope this is the one continuity where Harry DOES NOT become a Goblin. They already had the "best friend gone bad" angle in Venom, and to honest, if Harry found out what his father did, I really don't see him trying to avenge his cruel father. Plus, the Hobgoblin is already coming the following season.

Well, Harry sure as hell did a better job of terrorizing Peter than Venom ever did. So unless they can somehow have Venom outdo all the stuff Harry did in his last few stories before he died then it is a waste of taking Harry's schtick and giving it to Venom.

The Peter-Eddie friendship was stronger, because of their shared past (growing up together, losing their parents, etc.) I really enjoyed Eddie's character development, but there did seem to be something lacking from Harry's side. Plus, since when did Harry find out Peter is Spidey? That hasn't happened yet.

This opens the door to better plot ideas. Harry as the Goblin could return, and when he finds out about Peter, he could go into a situation where he's trying to fight the Goblin. He wants to both kill and save Peter. It would make the Goblin story interesting indeed.

Well, they already made Harry a drug addict and it was the combination of drugs and his father's death as well as finding Peter's costume when he decided to be nice and do the laundry that pushed him over the edge.

So unless they kill off Norman in S2 or they make Harry the Hobgoblin I don't think he'll be Peter's archenemy.

It's too bad because I found this Brock very lacking as a character and as a villain whereas I always thought of the Harry Goblin as tied with Norman as the ultimate foe. Harry did something no other villain ever did before: he broke Peter, he drove him utterly mad and nearly made him give up being Peter Parker to be Spidey full-time.

Nope... for me it's different, Venom is more like, older brother dissapointed vs his protected brother and Harry will be Best buddy becomes greatest foe...

They'll have to work really hard to fix the mess of a Goblin story they setup in Season 1.

In the middle of Season 1, I might add.

Too bad they didn't bother showing us Peter and Eddie particularly close or "brotherly" so it'd have more impact, or even flashbacks to Brock defending Peter.

Yeah, hence the "amnesia" subplot in Spider-Man 3.

To me, Harry was a manipulative bastard who could cut Peter deep. He may not have been as brutal as his father, but psychologically he ****ed Peter's life up more ways than anyone else could (before Mackie retconned Norman's death). I think this translated well to the movies as well. In TAS it was so-so, but it still was personal as he was fighting his best friend who had become the replacement of his worst enemy.

If they don't do Harry now because Venom is the closer friend (as Harry is such a tool in this show) who turns bad...it feels like a missed opportunity. It is why I think Brock should be a self-serving jackass like TAS or that and a dopplenganger like in SM3. It was an interesting angle in SSM, but it is a little too much Harry in the character in an attempt to make Brock/Venom more interesting.

Well, it makes sense. First they ripped off the Goblin's schtick for Eddie (knowing peter's secret, can evade the spider-sense), then they ripped off Harry's life for Eddie (uncaring dad) and now they turned Eddie into Harry.

yes he did steel his thunder...and I could not be happier

As good of a friend that Harry is to Peter, he has always craved his father's attention that the never got for most of his life. Norman has always been a d-bag of a father except for when he had amnesia. I could easily see Harry trying to kill Peter to avenge daddy's death.

Wait, people still think Harry is Gobby? :wow:
