People are starting to come around to the Hulk. The reason for the lackluster performance at the box office comes down to two things:

1) Most people are familiar only with the Hulk from the TV series, and the movie was more akin to the comic. Hell, the visual look of the movie was as close to the comic as any movie sans Sin City.

2) The plot was more cerebral and the directorial style was more art house than what the general public can comprehend. For one, it was nearly a full hour before we saw the title character.
the hour long wait till title character isn't too fond an aspect these days, that mould had been actually done pretty much in spidey, although i'd give you that a large part of the story before is taken up via origins and so forth...

if you watch the original superman film, it's about three years till you even see christopher reeves.

Same with Batman Begins, although the first hour is awesome in that movie!!!

The thing people fail to realise about the buildup in the Hulk is it has a lot of significance on scenes later in the movie, for example, Betty's dream is basically re-enacted by The Hulk and Betty outside Betty's cabin before the dogs come, only the end of that scene is different from the dream in that Hulk doesnt hurt Betty but protects her. We also see in the buildup that Bruce has a a strong inner anger in him amoung many other things. THATS why this movie NEEDS to be watched multiple times.

The cgi in ANY film looks much better when not blatantly lit. That being said i think with the limits of technology they did a pretty good job.

BTW the dog fight sequence was amazing (in fact poodles are vicious crazy dogs sometimes so dont underestimate lol). CGI in shadow is the best route.

One thing they may not have wanted to do was make hulk constantly jump across land masses. I think that made him look like more of a cartoon character a little. Maybe a couple times wouldve been better. Sometimes its how you use the cgi.

Have to respectively disagree there, my friend.

If anything, I thought the CGI employed for the daylight scenes was by far the best stuff in the film. I loved the CG when Hulk burst out of the base, stops and then starts running again, leading to his 1st gigantic leap. We then get yet more amazing CG when he touches down and recognises his old house and then to top it all off, we get the stunning tank scene.

It becomes even more impressive when you think that traditionally, special effects set in the daytime we always tougher to execute than nightime effects.

No longer.

I never said they were awful... in fact it was quite impressive. I just feel shadowing lets you cheat a little more for the very trained eye people have for cgi.

I think computers may get a 90% realistic look, but never truly 100%. I think theyve reached close to the limit cgi has recently in broad daylight and that is a feat, but for those that wont give the limits of computers slack and want it 100% realistic, dark settings is a technique to close in a teeny bit more on a truly authentic appearance...91,92,93% etc

And motion capture was very good for the most part, but every so often human error occurs with cgi and the human eye can catch an unnatural movement. There was a weird cartoon wiggle when hulk was jumping in the sky i noticed in the desert. But there was also the amazing tank sequence that had all of the correct movements.

Do you mean when the shockwave from the cluster-bomb hit him?

I think so. Its like a quick fit he has in mid air and then he lands deep into the sand dunes, which leads into the tank sequence.

All of you who voted that the CGI of the Hulk was good, do not know the Hulk at all...it sucked!
