I was 11 when DIE HARD came out in theatres in '88. My older brother had actually left home earlier that year to live on his own at barely 17yrs old. He went through a bad rebellious phase and one day he took off. Months later he shows up at the house and says he wants to take me to a movie. My choice. We never did alot of things together because of the age difference so I took this chance, because of course at that age my brother was the coolest person in the world to me. He said he'd even take me to see an R rated film. DIE HARD was my choice. I will always remember the 2 of us being totally floored by it. To this day I remember the little asides and jokes he made during the showing we were in. As for lines or moments that stand out? It's such a well crafted crowd pleasing peice of work, you could find a memorable/quotable line once every 2 1/2 minutes while watching it, but the moment and line that sums up what makes this film so compelling is the moment John is wrapped in the fire hose before the roof is blown and he looks down to see where he's going to jump. No shoes, bloodied, bruised, exhausted and being asked by fate to do something insane AGAIN that night does he make a flippant action hero quip? "Oh please God... Don't let me die." This is what makes Maclane NOT a typical 80's action movie one man army caricature. This was a vunerable human being that fate had decreed had to be the hero that night. It's the essence of the movie to me.
