Discussion: Electronic Cigarettes

I am rather confused how I've seen gun control advocates call shooters things like nutjobs, yet say we need to reform the mental health system so these poor souls can get the help they need.

You certainly are confused.

Re: ecigs. I smoked my last cigarette January 3rd 2012. I got my ecig on January 4th. They absolutely, definitely work for quitting smoking, and they should be encouraged, not banned in public places.

I would be happy if restaurants brought back the "smoking section" concept, but as a "vaping section" instead.

The fact of the matter is that the devices were developed for the purpose of being usable indoors without causing any harm to either the user or bystanders. The propylene glycol used in the oil that is vaporized is a common, organic compound, ruled safe for human consumption by the FDA. It's a common ingredient in everything from soda to asthma inhalers, and is inert in the lungs. What is exhaled is essentially water vapor, however there are those who vape juices with a VERY high nicotine content, and so some of that can get dispelled back into the air on the exhale. See this article for a more concise explanation http://mobile.philly.com/health/?wss=/philly/health&id=269361731

In addition, the recent WHO review on ecigs and vaping devices was HIGHLY criticized:

I do think that public usage should be reasonable. It would get the dialogue going among the PEOPLE, the cigarette smokers and those who switched to vaping.

I say keep it outside just until people actually figure out what it is and that it differs from smoking, otherwise every idiot will be whining about it being smoking and then it'll never end. Once it gets more public acknowledgement then see about allowing it indoors but people will still try to smoke indoors because they see people vaping and claim it's the same thing.

Because people are idiots.

By the way, Altria's Mark Ten ecig is a piece of garbage. Don't waste your money.

I'm a former smoker and lately some of my co-workers have been using the E-Cigarettes rather than regular cigarettes. I have to say, it's much better for everyone involved. They have the flavor ones that are much more tolerable for me to smell.

I'm also a manager at a grocery store and have allowed my workers to smoke them while inside. I don't think it's harmful in any way. I haven't had any complaints yet.

If Dicaprio can smoke one inside during the oscars...Why can't I? You is better than Leo?

Actually, they are. They contain fewer toxicants than cigarettes, but still aren't safe. Nevertheless, I'm ok with vape as I think it's a better choice between two evils as well as it is a right first step to quit smoking. As for me, I also tried vaping on my way to stop smoking cigarettes. Another good choice is nicotine gummies. I got some from Canadian pharmacy. And I think it's the best way not to bother others at all. Anyway, it has to be someone's personel choice to vape or not as it's not the same as cigarettes. I agree with the idea to make "vaping section" in restaurants because it's not even about harm for health but about discomfort of any smoke while eaing.
