This was one of the best things I've ever seen.

I loved the original. Had it on VHS as a kid and watched it repeatedly. This hit all the right spots for me. The action was great, the CGI was mind blowing. The voice cast was superb, and I thought they used the original songs perfectly. I might call this a masterpiece...

Favreau belongs in the Spielbergian pantheon I feel. Elf, Cowboys and Aliens, Iron Man, and this are all so radically different yet feel like stuff he would've done.

Cowboys and Aliens is probably his only duffer. I blame Orci & Kurtzman for that though.

Per rth at bot, headed for a $40-44 million Saturday. $110 million OW in play.

keeps getting better. looking like it'll top BvS domestic by the end. real four quadrant movie.

Took my niece to see this last night. We both loved it!

While I enjoyed Bill Murray and Christopher Walken's takes on "The Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You", both of those songs are absolutely dwarfed by Scarlett Johansson's performance of "Trust in Me", which is played over the credits but ought to have been included in the film itself. It's one of the best versions of a Disney song that I've EVER heard (and this includes stuff from the Broadway productions of The Lion King, Hunchback, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Mary Poppins), and is absolutely haunting and beautiful at the same time.

If you didn't stick around to listen to it during the credits, find a way to hear it, because it's absolutely brilliant (just like the movie itself, honestly).

Might get a best song nod. Who knows.

Agree! It's great. My little sister and I stayed through the credits cause they were a hoot.

Probably won't qualify since it isn't a new song. Even "please Mr kennedy" from insiide llewyn davis was disqualified for technically referencing an older song despite a very different arrangement and completely different lyrics.

Sadly, redhawk23 is right; songs have to be completely original in order to qualify for the "Best Original Song" Oscar... which is a shame because ScarJo's performance definitely deserves to be recognized.

Chef too. Great family film, with a good dose of food porn.

Wow....Just finished seeing this movie. My favorite things about this movie was

- Bill Murray's Baloo because he was just too likeable and funny

- Ben's Kingsley's Bagheera was both strict and a badass which was a nice nod to Baggy being the most feared and respected in the jungle in the Kipling tales

- Neel Seethi's performance as Mowgli was just extremely natural and it was also a nice nod to the Kipling tales to have Mowgli actually be crafty and able to handle himself better than he did in the classic animation.

- Idris Elba's performance and portrayal of Shere Khan was even more badass than the version in the animation. It was also interesting to see how they made him seem even moreso evil and vengeful with the piece of backstory he was given here.

- I also liked how "The Law of the Jungle" was emphasized in this film because I honestly wasn't even expecting that.

- Shame Kaa only had once scene but ScarJo was impressive in that scene and contributed to the plot of the film.

- I also liked how the Bandar-Log(as they are called in the Kipling stories) and Louie are portrayed in a more mobster-esque fashion and not as much in a comical shuck and jiving fashion here. A nod to the story where Bandar-Log kidnapped Mowgli and tried to make him rebuild the ruins.

- I also liked Lupita's portrayal of Raksha and how the wolves didn't back down when Khan threatened them for Mowgli's sake. Raksha was nicknamed "The Demon" in the stories due to her reputation in the jungle so it was nice to see her be tough here.

- Alongside that the special effects were exceptional here, it was hard at times to remember that this jungle in the movie was all CG

- The Fight scene between Bagheera and Khan and the final fight scene was just super fun to watch as well seeing as all the animals in the jungle decided to take Mowgli's side.

- It was also an interesting touch to see how Khan manipulated Mowgli into throwing away his fire in a subversion of Khan fearing "Man's Red Flower". It was also a nice callback to a scene in the stories where Mowgli came with fire and directly called Kahn out.

Not saying it was an 100% love letter to the Kipling tales but It seems like they blended elements that made it feel like a Kipling tale with the Disney style melded into it.

It's definitely a super fun experience and a movie I can see myself watching more than once.

I give the film a 9/10 altogether.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but wow, her voice is actually perfect for that song.

She was surprisingly good as Kaa. I went into it still thinking it was kind of weird casting but whatever, and came out really suprised how well she portrayed Kaa and her simultaneously seductive and predatory nature through her voice. And I do think had Kaa been voiced by a man like he normally is, people would've been too creeped out with the child-predator overtones made even more explicit in live action (which speaks to how society has a double-standard when it comes to things like underage boys being taken advantage of by women teachers). She was a good choice for all these reasons.
