Disney's live-action "Mulan"

I wonder if the movie having big changes from the animated film will translate though? It might be hard for some movie goers to get used to.

I think they need to make sure everyone knows this isn't so much a live-action version of the cartoon, as "Beauty and the Beast" was, as it is a new live version of the same story that has no other relation to the animated version.

I mean, the live action Alice in Wonderland bore little resemblance to the animated film and people still ate that up, but Mulan is far more beloved by the millennial crowd than Alice in Wonderland was, so it’s hard to tell.

Arguably more people hold mulan dear than Alice in wonderland though. At least the Disney version

'Alice' had Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter, and came out when Depp was still wildly popular. Mulan doesn't have any big name actors or characters like that.

Donnie yen, jet Li and gong Li aren’t big name actors?

The world is not just North America

No, but considering this is a Hollywood production and not a Chinese production, their priority will be marketing this in the States.

I'm just saying that Alice had an advantage in Depp's Hatter. Mulan doesn't have any characters like that.

If they kept Mushu, yeah. But sounds like that's not a thing.

That's the only holdover from the animated film I want. I love the fact they're deviating from the animated film, but I want Mushu in this. If he fits in the narrative, like Gong Li's villainous witch character.

Disney’s “Mulan” Remake To Cost $290M?

Disney has been known to spend big when they want to, and with their upcoming live-action take on their 1998 animated classic “Mulan” there will be plenty of money spent.
Pursue News reports that pre-production is well underway in New Zealand on the project which kicks off filming in August, and that Disney has set aside a budget of $290 million for the project.
Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “The Zookeeper’s Wife”) helms the film, making her fourth woman to ever solo direct a live-action film with a budget over $100 million. If the figure given is accurate, she will easily top that list of four.
Sources tell the outlet that the sets will be massive and are of an unprecedented scale with much of the team who worked on “Thor: Ragnarok” building these sets. The new “Mulan” is expected to be released March 27th 2020.

290 Mill Budget Thats Huge and Marketing +Trailers and TV Spot are not even in this and at the end Disney sitting on 350-400 Budget this Movie is already Doomed to make over a Billion at the Boxoffice

Are they going back in ****ing time to ancient China and cloning a small dragon for Mushu? Jesus.

That's almost as much as Infinity War. What the hell could they possibly be doing with this movie that could warrant that budget?

The big question is if macdonalds bring back the szechuan sauce

Not my money, so go crazy Disney! Spend a billion for all I care.

The combination of an event film with tangential identity related issues guarantees this will be big money, they've got Wonder Woman and Black Panther as very good evidence of this concept. Whatever budget they're putting into it they're probably highly confident they'll be able to return at least double at the BO, probably substantially more if they can build enough hype behind it.

This movie probably have a good chance of becoming the most successful American movie in China of all time. Or maybe it will flop there. China is often a tricky market to predict.

I guess half the budget is going to the avalanche scene.

Excuse me for digging up your post from 2 weeks ago but I just see it now; IIRC Alice 1 was only the second 3D movie after Avatar, which partly explains its crazy earning power both domestic and overseas.

Well we know that Disney is a big earner so it’s no surprise that they are also big spender, though I don’t expect them to spend near 300M on this. Of course if it makes as much as BatB then it’s no problem, but no one can guarantee that will happen.

Disney can still survive if it underperforms though. They probably won’t blink at AWiT and Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland actually flopped on bigger scale. I mean, even Sony announces some questionable projects after Jumanji brought them nearly 1B, let alone a studio with lots to spare like Disney.

I mean, some of their movies I think they plan on a loss, for a write off.

Who knows. They're more savvy about it than we are still this point.
