Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Or maybe you should just take my opinion as my own and not take it personally. Where in my opinion did I say that it should apply to others? Where in my opinion did I say others should think like I do? Where did I say that it was true and others were false? You make a lot of assumptions there.
When there is a "controversy" and people come in with the blank statements like something is "unnecessary" it definitely sounds beyond opinion.

After multiple nearly shot for shot remakes its good that Disney is trying to do something more true to asian cinema and different from the cartoon. Make a historical epic closer to the source material.
Which Disney remakes have been shot for shot remakes?

But one thing. Mulan looks like a total badass from the beginning. I expected her to be completely awkward and a joke in the training scenes as well as the beginning.

The wiki page for Hua Mulan says in the original story she is already skilled in martial arts, sword fighting, and archery before she enlists in the army.

Ridiculous. Because I didn't add the words "I feel its" before it, you think I'm making an objective truth statement? That's silly.

Oh, I know you aren't making objective truth statements.

Well, I like how, unlike the marketing for the other Disney remakes, this teaser wasn't banking on nostalgia, but rather the inherent power of the story. I just hope they can pull it off without it feeling like generic "Asian cinema lite." The cinematography looks very nice so far.

And yeah, I thought we'd see the phoenix in this teaser, and was totally wrong. For the first time ever!

We needed a shot where the Phoenix had the weird head and upper body of Will Smith, painted red. That would have sold me. :o

Just watched Mulan tonight - boy, this remake has some big footsteps to follow in. I really am very hopeful though: I love what we saw today. I can’t wait for a first look at characters like the Phoenix, the witch, etc. I’m honestly hugely disappointed that the songs won’t be in the film, because “Reflection” would have been “Speechless” level amazing. I hope that final battle in the Imperial City is expanded upon, because honestly I want more rooftop chase scenes. That creepy little doll that they find in the burned out village still creeps me out to this day (that thing freaked me out as a kid), but I think that whole scene will be really emotional in live-action. I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie gets rated PG-13, because even the original has got some really mature themes, and in live-action those could even be expanded: they’re seeming to go for a kind of different route with Mulan herself, where in this new film she seems a lot more reserved and scared at first, almost as if she’s given up on life: in the original, there’s a line that really hit me - after she’s been found out, Mushu asks her to look at her reflection, and she says “I see nothing”. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but it seemed really powerful. In this remake, they could expand that and really insert some powerful messaging about valuing your own life, finding purpose in your own existence. You know what I mean?
Anyway, those are just my thoughts of the day.

I'm not thrilled about cutting out Shang, especially since it sounds like they're replacing him with another love interest, so why not just.....let him be Shang?

This may be silly, but is it possible that it's because Disney/Marvel is making SHANG CHI, and they don't want two major characters named Shang?

I think the problem this film is going to have, based on this trailer anyway, is differentiating itself from every other Asian fantasy epic that's come before. If it had the musical numbers that would have made it stand out. It doesn't look terrible by any means but for anyone a fan of this genre of film there's not a great deal in this trailer that sets itself apart, other than the characters talking in English. I think Flickchick's comment about it coming across as 'Asian cinema lite' is a good description.

They're pretty much banking on the clout of the name Hua Mulan in China.

Interesting footnote, Crystal Liu was apparently considered for the role of the 2009 Chinese movie adaption of the Mulan legend. She's come full circle.

I knew that. I just assume that this Mulan is the live-action adaptation of the Disney's animated movie so it's weird to see her that way.

Liu Yifen is a perfect fit for Mulan, but her acting is what you guys should really be concerned about. She's like a female Ben Affleck with much worse acting. I hope she can improve that in Mulan.

This appears to be a loose adaptation at best. It actually looks like a proper movie compared to the other live action films they've done. I might actually pay money to see this one for that alone.

Even though she my bae, I have to say her acting isn't exactly top tier. She's not by any stretch horrible, but she's probably not winning any awards. She's more known for the innocent aura classiness she carries around. But I'm pretty sure she fit's Disney's pretty stringent criteria of someone youthful looking, fluent in English, yet not exactly full Chinese-American, someone the China audience can recognize, someone with previous experience in martial arts choreography, and can act. I mean there's probably a bunch of other better actresses out there in China (with their population, their pool is just huge), but the language fluency and not having an American vibe to her is a pretty hard combo to come by.

even in this teaser I thought she came off as wooden several times. Acting is definitely not one of her strength tbh. But I still think she's a very, very good choice for Mulan.

PS: I knew her from the famous 2006 series "The Return of the Condor Heroes"

It looks surprisingly good. I guess my only issue, which isn’t even that big of an issue for me personally, is that if they wanted to cut out Shang, Mushu and the songs, they shouldn’t have made it “Disney’s” Mulan. I still am going to miss Shang and the songs though.

I reckon it looks incredible. Can’t wait to see a fun new adaption.

Hope they keep the main theme though. Loved the bit in wreck it Ralph 2 when we heard a snippet of it

What I'm reading in this thread about Liu Yifei is very reassuring, lol

Anyways, seeing a lot of people complain about Mulan not cutting her hair and according to what I'm hearing, the reason she doesn't is because at the time the movie is set, cutting your hair would've been considered disrespectful to your parents. So there

I just read on another forum from someone who knows Chinese cinemas that her movies actually don't do that well in China and that whilst she has a large following online that support hasn't translated into movie success. Don't know how true that is but you'd hope Disney did their homework when it came to who's likely to draw people in in China. Although given how they've handled Star Wars it wouldn't surprise me if Disney are as blind to what Chinese audiences are drawn to as the rest of us.

Heard that Mushu isn't in the movie haven't seen the trailer yet can anyone else confirm?

Hmm to me its just similar to Cinderella 2005. No talking mouses and song numbers. And Disney always include their logo unless its Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm or Fox.And mulan is the perfect title. What else would they call it.
