Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Disney can’t catch a break right now for sure. It’s delaying opening theme parks. Who know when movies will come back and what capacity. Sports are slowly coming back but not exactly at full capacity either.

Just a bad time overall if you’re in the entertainment business.

Tenet is going to flop hard either way, as long as it comes out this year. Pretty sure all big blockbuster movies will flop this year. No shame in delaying these movies until next year...
Yeah I really still don't get the thinking of "We need to release these in theaters now" when it's clear that they're not gonna make money. What is Nolan's deal? Why is he against it coming out in theaters next year?

Fixed :(

I ask myself this every time I see reports of him sort of demanding WB open the movie in theaters in July as if the idea of delaying a film is the end of the world. For a man that comes off as extremely logical, he sure doesn’t seem to care about current trends and health guidelines.

Maybe if the movie doesn't come out in July he don't get his 20% cut :o

That's what it has to be. It has to be some money thing. Maybe Nolan owes money to the Armenian mob or something. Otherwise it makes no sense

Even if it was to get a good turnout in areas where theaters are actually opened(due to cabin fever and certain political ideologies refusing to take this thing seriously) , there’s gonna be a lot of places worldwide that don’t have theaters opened. I just don’t see how it makes business sense.

And even areas where theaters are opened theaters are probably gonna have less seats total. Even if Tenet is the only thing showing.

As I said in another thread, there's really nothing obvious for them to do. Pushing movies back will lose money, release to VOD/Streaming for a lot of movies will lose money, releasing in theaters now won't make money.
Total no win situation

Part of now wonders if they just cut their loses with this thing and put it on D+. The China market that they were banking on is only running at 50% open at the moment.

Fools. People have been watching great films at home for 50+ years. The home is where the majority of all movie viewing is done. Do the responsible and safe thing by putting this years' films on D+.

Mulan and TENET will NOT be released this August. The studios and anyone who believes this will happen are dreaming.

The reason I'm reading (on twitter) is that Studios want to release big budget movies like Tenet, Mulan, WW84 and BW at first chance they get is to cut their losses.

The only way they are going to cut their losses anytime soon is to release it on some sort of VOD model. If they are hell bent on theatrical releases, they're gonna have to be ready to wait a year or more.

I don't think VOD model can help them get more money than even a less successful theatrical run, after that they can always release the movie on VOD, just like what happened with Disney's The Call of The Wild.

That's not the "responsible thing" to do at all and plenty of posters on here, Twitter, Reddit, podcasts, vodcasts, news outlets, etc. have said why.

Pathetic.

The responsible thing is to release these films in the safest way possible and to ensure the most people can watch the films. Disney+ and VOD is the only responsible way to release these films safely and ensure the most people get to watch them safely. Profits, theatrical profits especially, should be tertiary concerns after safety and convenience. Disney will make plenty of money doing a VOD release this year.

If studios keep hold of these films & just sit on them until its safe for people to return to theaters, wonder what the public reception to them will be? People will be like 'oh yeah, forgot that was due to come out'.
Any interest or buzz in certain films may well peeter out...

Movies that are tentpoles are poised to be events so I know some interest will wane. Granted I'll watch them once released because I'm a fan in general, but not everybody is like me.

They’ll still lose much more than delaying it a year. There’s a reason they keep delaying it while releasing crap like Artemis Fowl to Disney+. They knew that wouldn’t make any real money for them. This is different. And people can wait a year. The amount of crap out already from streaming services is enough to last us a lifetime.
