Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Not that I'm a huge Aguilera fan, but what's the issue with the song? That she's doing one of the pop songs for an Asian-themed film?

Random thought/question: do you guys think Disney will delay the release of Mulan to streaming* to get more people to pay the $30 for it? This is Disney after all who isn't shy about their pricing methods with home media

*EDIT: I mean the non PVOD "included with Disney+ subscription" streaming. Like The Mandolorian, Hamilton, etc.

I liked the song and the video.
What is tone deaf about it?
Some could say that it's weird and tone deaf for an movie with a largely East Asian (or people with East Asian roots) cast and crew, set in Eastern Asian countries, and has huge Eastern Asian cultural influences to have a white singer perform the lead song/single for the soundtrack in this day and age.
It is odd because Lion King (At least the The Gift album) and even Aladdin they went out of their way to predominately use Black/African or Middle Eastern/Indian artists for those respective soundtracks. Hell even Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asian's original soundtracks featured mostly black or Asian artists (I have my own thoughts on how they handled the BP album though).
And with the rise of East Asian music genres (K-Pop, J Pop, Chinese rap, etc.) in the mainstream music scenes around the world, it seems like Disney kinda missed a lay up here. And it's a bit different than having say a Black person be a composer for a Chinese movie or something like that.

I don't know why The Guard said it, that's on them. But it is a bit odd to me, even with Aguliera's history with Mulan, to not feature a Chinese (or at least East Asian) performer to do the song. Or at least the first single. But I don't know if I'd say tone deaf or racist. And I don't think that many people are from what I've seen/read. If anyone is saying anything it's a very small minority.

But of course there are always people who refuse or are incapable of seeing another side or POV on something and complain about people complaining, which ironically makes them apart of the "internet whiners" that they always criticize.

I don’t get how delaying the release date would affect whether someone is going to pay or not. If you’re not willing to fork over $30 then the release date isn’t going to matter.

I should've been more clear. I mean the release to "free" streaming. You know like available as part of Disney+ no extra money.

So the people who say "I won't pay for it at $30" and will wait until it's on regular VOD, Redbox, or part of Disney+ streaming; will instead be more inclined to pay the $30. I'm just asking because this weekend I spoke to a few, who live alone, but said they usually wouldn't pay the $30 but they're getting bored.

Oh got it. Yeah count me in the camp who will wait for it to be part of the “free streaming” on Disney+. I refuse to spend $30 on a movie that I haven’t seen before. I don’t even like to spend the $6 rental fee on amazon. I can see why it’s enticing for families to spend that money but I’m just a single guy (who’s thrifty...not cheap). I don’t think I’ll ever be bored enough to spend that money on just one thing when there’s still a ton of things to watch on Netflix or Amazon Prime for no extra cost other than the subscription fee.

Edit: Actually now that I thought about it...I might spend that money on Black Widow. But that’s about it. I don’t think there’s any other new movie that interests me enough to spend that kind of money, not even Tenet.

Yeah I completely agree.
Although I don't mind spending the $6 for YouTube, Amazon, etc. rentals. I don't do it often but I don't mind.

But your and my thinking is why I'm wondering if Disney will hold off on any other type of Mulan release other than the $30 one. Because as I said, I'm hearing people who live alone starting to say "I'll pay cuz I'll get bored," which doesn't make sense to me because there is millions of hours of content our there if you need to watch something. But I'm hearing people have that thinking

Thats the typocal problem of the film streaming industry: I wanna see as much I can, but dont want to pay nothing. The result is cheap and garbage teen movies like netflix release nearly every week.

What do you mean? "The Last Summer" is a classic

Meh...it’s no different than the garbage that the major studios puts out in theaters IMO. You have to sift through a lot of crap to find a gem. I’d rather do that at home than at the theater anyway.

At least there's spectacle with the major studios. At this point, most direct streaming is only slightly above those old DTV. Why do you think Disney thinks they can charge $30? Because there's no spectacle on these direct-to-streaming. That's what people are hungry for.

At least for me...spectacle gets old if there’s no substance to it though. I will say to his credit, Nolan is one of the very few who provides both IMO. Especially in the age of reboots, remakes, and sequels.

Netflix has started to get into spectcle, at least action spectacle, with stuff like 6 Underground, Project Power, THe Old Guard, Extraction, Bright...from the ones I've seen they aren't that good. But they are trying

Agree. Marvel constantly tries to one-up itself with throw-the-kitchen-sink visual spectacle, and it's part of why I found Infinity War kind of hollow; we just hurtled at breakneck pace from one elaborate action/CGI setpiece to another (I do think Endgame was a fuller emotional experience though).
