Disney's live-action "Mulan"

I forgot the main actress is pro police brutality.

Eh... I guess I won't be watching this even when it's available for free in December.

Eh, Chinese actors and actresses are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Not only are those living in mainland China subjected to government propaganda when it comes to news but if they comment on social media, it has to be government approved. Not sure if she had any say in the matter but perhaps shouldn't have commented. Had she supported the protesters, we would have never heard of her again after that.

There was one section in a video about fake martial arts by YouTuber Super Eyepatch Wolf I watched where he talks about government sanctioned “martial artists” going up against an actual trained professional fighter, in order to prove the superiority of the Chinese nation, government and martial arts. The professional fighter wins. The Chinese government, seeing this as dishonoring the “greatness” of China, has the media basically shame the professional fighter and ruin his entire career.

I’d highly recommend watching the full fake martial arts video and the fight itself. It really does demonstrate how disgustingly controlling and manipulative Chinese governmental propaganda can be.

So it's at 77% on RT with 91 reviews so far. No consensus yet.

Looking at the reviews, I think Disney is losing out on a LOT of money by making Mulan a PVOD Disney+ release. Sure they keep more money from PVOD rentals (and get a theatrical release in China), but should've just held it for March 2021.

I'll definitely be watching this at some point over the weekend, but I do find it somewhat ironic that one of there best reviewed remakes in a while just happens to be the one going straight to streaming with a very limited theatrical release. I mean talk about a missed opportunity. Disney really should have considered delaying this until next year where they could have actually made some real money from it, but it is what it is I guess.

Chris Stuckman gave this a C-, felt the main actress was bland and didnt do anything that rose above the original.

If the Chinese audiences like it and they have enough theaters open, maybe they can make enough at the box office there to cover the left over from the Disney+ sales.

Roxy Striar reviewed the movie in the beginning of her Youtube show on Thursday and she thought it was really good. Especially the messaging. Though she watches a screener, she thought it was worth 30 dollars. Also thought it would have looked great in a theater.

So is there any humor in this at all? Or is it just a straight action epic?

I'm watching Grace Randolph's review and she showed headline that said Liu Yifei was forced by the Chinese government to say she supports the police.

Whilst positive the reviews don’t exactly scream $30, or in my case $34.99.

I've just seen it costs £19.99 to purchase this on Disney+ in the UK. That's just too much (when you consider new DVD releases here are anything from £9.99 to £12.99 and if I saw this at the cinema, the ticket would be £4.99)

I just don't think the price is justified so I'm another one who will be waiting to see this.

Haven't been on Rotten Tomatoes in a while. I hate how they now kinda bury the Average Score now. It was bad enough it got ignored but it'll be even worse now. People still think 80% on RT mean the movie got an average rating of 8/10

80% and a score of 7/10 is pretty good for Mulan. Nothing spectacular.

I'm very interested in seeing how audiences respond. I always thought that this looked like the first Disney remake where it looks like they set out to actually make a movie and not just a soulless cash grab. However, the removal of the "fun" and beloved elements is very risky. Hope it pays off for them though. And at least, for the most part, it seems like it did quality wise.

Yeah in the US it's usually new $20 (for digital) to $25 (for Blu Ray) new movie purchases. Paying $30 makes no sense to me when you're just gonna watch it at home. And especially when it's going to be free/part of a subscription in 4 months.

I just don't get the logic of being "bored" enough to spend $30 on a movie you'll watch in your own home, you're not sure you'll enjoy, only is around 2 hours long, and will be no extra charge in 4 months if you're that curious. Besides there just being a lot of content out there to cure that boredom. Even newer content. This week/weekend alone: The Boys dropped their first 3 eps, that Raise By Wolves show is apparently pretty good and dropped 3 eps, AP Bio returned for season 3 on Peacock, I’m Thinking of Ending Things just came out on Netflix, Chef's Table: BBQ came out on Netflix, and if you're an NBA fan the semifinals are going off. Again that's just the new content...why would I pay $30 when it's not like I'm gonna get a theatrical experience, get out of the house, or get any of the benefits of going to the movies. Especially when I already pay for HBO Max, Netflix, etc. $30 isn't much for me at all. But even if I was Bill Gates rich, there are just better ways to waste $30

But to each their own and I hope everyone who rents it enjoys it.

I'm certainly not one of those people. You don't need to point that out as RT have been around for more than a decade. People who visit that site everyday probably know that. I certainly do know that.... Also average rating =/= average score at least that how rt presents it.

And that 80% is still much better than the RT rating for The Lion King, Aladdin and the Maleficent movies. Can we allow/let people to cheer when a movie got a fresh rating especially during this pandemic? Why do we people always need to eXplain how RT works. Like seriously. We get it you know how Rt works.

Relax. It's not that deep.
If you're not one of those people who I mentioned don't get how RT works, I wasn't addressing you. So you can ignore it. But it seems like you are one of those people because you think that the average rating is not the average score...when it is. See below
What is the Average Rating? How is it calculated?
The Average Rating is an average of the individual critic scores, based on a 1-10 scale. Each critic's original rating scale (e.g. star, letter grade, numeric) is converted to a number between 1 and 10, and then the numbers are averaged. Reviews without individual ratings are not counted in the Average Rating calculation, and a minimum of five reviews with individual ratings is required for an Average Rating to be calculated. The Average Rating measures the overall quality of a film or TV show based on an average of individual critic scores. The Tomatometer simply measures the percentage of positive reviews for a given film or TV show.
From the Rotten Tomates FAQ.

And yes RT has been around a decade...and people still misconstrue how it works. Being around a long time doesn't mean everyone knows how something works. Even on this site. I've seen it plenty of times. And if you're wrong about something, someone is going to correct you. Sorry, but that's how life is

Nothing I said in my post doesn't allow people to cheer the movie getting a fresh rating. I even said multiple times, even in the post you quoted, that I hope the movie is good, that the people who rent it enjoy it, and/or that it pays off for the studio.

Its now up to 82%! I'm going to try to stream it this weekend if I can.
