Disney's live-action "Mulan"

I understand that but whether they're born in China or they're of Chinese descent but born in America or England, I don't really see why it would matter.

I don't really care if the actors are Chinese, or Chinese-American, or Chinese-British, or whatever. Just as long as they're actually of Chinese origin/descent.

I don't mind if the actors are Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean or even Japanese (for at least the first three, China is a vast country and they can more reasonably pass for Chinese of that era. Japan is maybe a different story, but I am okay even then). I draw the line at Dwayne Johnson for Shang though. :oldrazz:

As far as director is concerned, directing a musical movie is a creature into of itself. That's going to be hard enough of a skill set to find, without having to think whether he or she is Asian or not.

I don't think they'll make this a musical. Maleficent and cinderella weren't

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they cut the music from this one. To me it wasn't particularly iconic or essential the way it was with Menken's stuff in the earlier films (or the Elton John Lion King songs, for that matter).

While I think that Mulan could work without the music, I don't think that they'll do that. The score got an Academy Award nomination for goodness sake. I also wonder if they'll bring in the overt supernatural stuff from the animated movie or if they'll try and do more of a straight-up "historical" piece?

It'd be kind of pointless if they kept it a straight-up "historical" piece. The reason they'd redoing their own film version is so they can use the supernatural pieces, tiny dragon et al. That's what made the Disney version stand out.

I actually think Mulan (and Hercules) are the two most underrated Disney scores. The songs are actually brilliant.

However, I don't think it's as essential as Beauty and the Beast. It would work much better without the music, like Cinderella.

I'll admit I enjoy "I'll Make a Man out of You" and "Reflection" well enough, but I honestly don't even remember any of the other songs. To be fair, it's been a good long time since I've watched it, but I just remember really missing Menken on that one. Goldsmith's score was good though.

And I totally agree about Hercules.

They'll probably only bring back that song for this version, to be sung over the end credits by flavor of the month pop star 2018.

Yep you got it. I bet Demi Lovato is already waiting by her phone.

Well to be fair Hercules was great the-ater and indeed our favourite flavour

And it had James Woods playing Hades, which is just awesome.

Gosh, I bet Hercules will be the next live action adaption. You just wait and see.

Previous herc adaptions haven't done well but that's because they didn't have the disney name backing them up

I've once read a statement saying that Disney's Hercules is the best animated Superman film. I think I might agree with it.

That's strange, I got a message this morning that someone suggested erika Fong as mulan but that message seems to have disappeared.

Oh well, anyway I really like her. She seems like a genuinely nice person and she would be an amazing mulan! I'm not sure if she can sing but I don't know if they're going for that angle anyway

I just saw a fantastic movie the other day called front cover and there was a guy in it who would be perfect for Shang. His name is Jake Choi and he's an amazing up and coming actor. I would love to see him get the role...

Would Yifei Liu still look believable as a young Mulan if cast? I personally think she'd be a good candidate but I just wonder if it's better going late teens early adults hood or mid 20s for the Mulan character.... I know 28 year olds play teenagers all the time in Hollywood but it depends on if Dawson casting is appropriate

if Ming-Na Wen isn't somehow involved in the movie then that would be depressing, it would be GREAT if she was Mulan's mother in the movie.

^ How old is Mulan supposed to be at this point? late teens- early twenties?

If we're going for an late teen-Early adulthood actress for Mulan, I think Natasha Liu Bordizzo:

She's only 21, skilled in martial arts (Taekwondo and Kenpo), speaks good English, mixed Chinese/Italian and she's pretty likeable as an actress. Now I didn't think much of the Crouching Tiger sequel but I thought she was very likeable in her role as Snow Vase. So

She can pass for 20's.

True and so can Crystal/Yifei Liu. I just don't know how conspicuous it'll look in light of films like the new upcoming Spider-Man casting people more close to the 18-21 year old range for Teen roles as well as the upcoming Power Ranger reboot doing the same.
