Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Well at least my bae gonna get paid at least :D

In all honesty though, with the amount of Disney "Princess" movies out, they can do a legit Kingdom Hearts shared universe. Imagine Lily James, Emma Watson, Liu Yifei, and Naomi Scott all in the same film :hmr:

Kingdom Hearts will happen, they're just biding their time.

Excuse me for digging up your post from 2 weeks ago but I just see it now; IIRC Alice 1 was only the second 3D movie after Avatar, which partly explains its crazy earning power both domestic and overseas.

Hm, that sounds familiar! That would also explain it! :)

Disney’s “Mulan” Remake To Cost $290M?

Disney has been known to spend big when they want to, and with their upcoming live-action take on their 1998 animated classic “Mulan” there will be plenty of money spent.
Pursue News reports that pre-production is well underway in New Zealand on the project which kicks off filming in August, and that Disney has set aside a budget of $290 million for the project.
Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “The Zookeeper’s Wife”) helms the film, making her fourth woman to ever solo direct a live-action film with a budget over $100 million. If the figure given is accurate, she will easily top that list of four.
Sources tell the outlet that the sets will be massive and are of an unprecedented scale with much of the team who worked on “Thor: Ragnarok” building these sets. The new “Mulan” is expected to be released March 27th 2020.

How the hell does a Mulan movie cost $290 million?

I guess it's going to rely on CGI instead of amazing musical numbers.

I was about to ask the same thing. Maybe they’re going full zhang yimou. Exquisite costumes, epic settings, sword fights on delicate lakes etc. that would be kewl

How the hell does a Mulan movie cost $290 million?

Location shoots, cgi, battle scenes, period costumes, extensive set dressing, thousands of crew members, catering for those thousands of crew members etc.

In this day and age $290 million doesnt seem like a lot for a blockbuster or a major film. And Idk why anyone worries about the budgets of Disney films. Money isnt an issue for Disney.

Does it matter? They're obviously confident on it making serious money in return, or else they wouldn't have commissioned such a big budget.

If this was Aladdin or Little Mermaid I could at least somewhat understand the extravagant expense (even then that's absurd). But Mulan was never that big a movie, nor was the music overly memorable. So, yeah, I'm a little confused as to how and why Disney might be spending so much money on adapting one of their middling animated successes. You tack on marketing costs and the films going to have to go close to clearing a billion dollars to make any coin.

Mulan actually made more money than The Little Mermaid.

I guess they re making it s massive pg13 war epic. But even with a CG Mushu the cost wouldn't be that astronomical.

To be fair, Mulan was released almost a decade later and near the end of the Disney renaissance. The Little Mermaid was the beginning, getting people to trust the Disney animated brand name again.

I think in recent years, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King are the gold standard of modern animated Disney. Mulan is fondly remembered but not on the level of those four but probably the most popular post-Lion King, pre-Frozen.

I'd actually say Tarzan is the most popular one between The Lion King and Frozen. It made more money than Mulan did.

They probably also want this movie to do well in China (the animated version did not), so that might factor into their decision-making as well.

I’m aware if that, but it didn’t have the cultural impact the other Disney films did. You’d be lucky to find anyone who would put it in their top 5 animated movies. So yeah, nearly $300m on Mulan is ridiculous to me. I have to imagine the budget is just a rumour or a mistake.

Im pretty sure the Mulan cartoon has more than one action scene. This live action version will probably have more action and be larger scale than the cartoon. And it's a period piece set in China which means lots of intricate costumes.

As for the box office, Beauty and the Beast made over $1 billion and Jungle Book made over $900 million so as long as Mulan is a good film it should do fine and make a profit. Even if it doesnt make much of a profit it's not going to really matter. These live action remakes don't really need sequels and Disney can write the film off if it's a box office failure.

Now we know that Liu Yifei is playing Mulan, the only other casting news that I'm actually excited for this movie is.......who is playing that supposed male lead/ Mulan's love interest "Chen Hong Hui" in that leaked casting call?

I wish they cast Ludi Lin. He's super handsome and gorgeous, great personality plus he has a background in martial arts.

Also Naomi Scott is playing Jasmine in "Aladdin". It will be nice to see another power ranger cast in a live-action Disney animated movie.

Disney Casts 'Mulan' Love Interest (Exclusive)
Disney's Mulan has cast Mulan's love interest: Yoson An, who hails from New Zealand.

The rising star, who is of Chinese descent, will star opposite Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu), who is playing the titular heroine Hua Mulan, who disguises herself as a man in order to spare her elderly father from having to join the military.

An will play Chen Honghui, a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit. He becomes Mulan's most important ally and eventual love interest.

His character is Li Shang's replacement.

They're just going all willy nilly ain't they.

I'm getting the feeling there won't be an "I'll make a man out of you" musical bit in this movie. :( lol. That's my favorite Disney song.

Since they ditched Shang, any hope for Mushu outside of a cameo/easter egg is pretty much done.

Probably not.

I think An looks like a good choice. I saw he was doing some sort of movie or something with Rachel Griffiths. I’m glad he’s getting some attention.

Maybe this might be his first step towards eventually landing the role of Shang chi?
