Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Wait, this isn’t based off the animated movie?

Mushu was fine, not the best animal sidekick but not the worst. So, is this more of an historical epic than adaptaion?

Booooring!

Only joking. But I do wonder how Disney is going to make this one of their “fairy tales” if at all?

I don't think you can. Is this going to be in Chinese or English?

As a white man, I’m personally offended they didn’t get someone who looks like me. #BoycottDisney

I don't really get the point of making a completely faithful Mulan story when there's already been so many (one just a decade ago). Isn't the point that this is going to be Disney's Mulan? Talking mini dragon and all? Fantasy is part of the fun of it.

Outside of Asia I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that had even heard of this film or any of the other Mulan based films other than the Disney version. The Disney connection alone means this film will get a much wider audience than previous incarnations.

I have no idea what this movie is supposed to be. Adaptation of the animated one? Disney-fied straight-laced historical take? Something in between?

This feels like a return to Maleficent, which I am not all that happy about. That more straight adaptations, with some added material were going pretty great.

People were complaining about the straight remakes, and needing to "fix" things from the animated films that didn't need fixing (BATB was especially iffy in this regard).

So they're going to get flack either way. Personally I tend to lean on the side of "if you're going to make a new version, then do something different with it, because I can just watch the old one if I want to see that story."

Assuming that Disney has every intention of appealing to the Chinese market, it's probably going to be a reimagining in the vein of a historical epic rather than an adaptation of the Disney original.

Yeah the animated film didn't do particularly well in China.

Knock knock
Who’s there
A movie that’s taken slight deviations from the script
A movie that’s taken slight deviations from the script who?

Moo!

Lan.

Yeah, looks like a straight adaptation of the story and not based on the animated version. I suppose the three soldier sidekicks aren't in it, either.

There was no villainous witch in the original Mulan legend. I think this movie will be its own thing.

From Niki Caro's Instagram: "Reflections".

I would have personally supported this movie if Mulan was played by Tom Holland in drag.

So a white man playing a chinese woman playing a chinese man. The role of a lifetime!

Good to know that Mulan's three soldier friends will be in the movie. That Doua Moua dude looks nothing like Chien Po, though.

If it's no singing in it, we better ATLEAST get overtures of "I'll Make a Man out of You", "Honor To Us All" and "Reflection" during some scenes.
