Disney's live-action "Mulan"

No Mushu? And here I was hoping Eddie Murphy would reprise the role or they get Jay Pharaoh or Kevin Hart. :(

Still holding out hope for a Mushu. Maybe he just won't have a speaking role but a presence. There's been no confirmation one way or another and that would all be done in post anyway.

I don't think you can. Is this going to be in Chinese or English?

Probably English, seeing that it'll be dubbed over in Mandarin in China anyway, as the cast except for Liu Yifei aren't native speakers (with local celebrity voice actors as part of the promotional package). A bit of a generalisation here, but the average American moviegoer not being big on subtitles also plays into this, since this is a Disney product after all.

I have a feeling that this movie will be visually stunning.

If Whale Rider is anything to go by, it should.

So they even changed Mulans alter egos name. They really want to be as far removed from the animated film as possible

If it's no singing in it, we better ATLEAST get overtures of "I'll Make a Man out of You".

Historical accuracy be damned, that scene would need a Native American chief and construction worker.

They would be mental if they didn’t get Ken Jeong to play mushu especially after all the buzz crazy rich asians is getting

They clearly looking to bank on China money on this, I highly doubt they'll get a Korean actor to play a Chinese Dragon.

I think they want to honor the Chinese Ballad the story is derived from and not the animated movie.

So the movie isn't completely a China based movie like the Vicki Zhao version but more an American version that's based on the lore.

Mostly no giant musical numbers and a talking dragon.

While the results remain to be seen, I personally love that they are not just repeating the animated version beat-for-beat the way they did with Beauty and the Beast.

I would have preferred if they took the Jungle Book approach, crafting a mostly new story with the DNA of the original movie utilizing a few of the songs at the same time.

You know who would be an interesting choice for Mushu? Awkafina.

- distinctive voice
- great as a BFF
- bankable and recognisable

I mean, there’s no reason why mushu has to be male. If they had to find a replacement for Eddie she would be amazing!

I do hope it was originally planned that way, and not because they succumbed to public pressure, cuz the latter hardly turns out well.

The gay community was up in arms over never seeing "I'll make a man out of you" in live action.

Sounds like they realize divorcing this from the animated movie was actually a bad idea.

It was probably backlash because all we been hearing is how it's like a historical epic drama. They decided to add in songs and Mushu just now, they ain't slick.

Wonder how this will go over with the China audience.

I don't think a Disney live action adaptation of an animated musical, a beloved one at that, without any songs would have turned out well.

Now the question is Mushu gonna be voiced or just an animal sidekick?

The two most famous songs from the animated film were still in the closing credits so they weren't omitted entirely.

Yea but it's not part of the movie canon or narrative. They can easily just put Mulan's famous songs as part of the ending credits and not in the film itself.
