Disney's live-action "Mulan"

The first Mulan wasn't even well received in China. This one will have to be really different to be a success there.

Here we go.... :funny:

First Genie, now this?
Robin Williams wasn't black

No but people are *****ing because Genie is black is the remake and not another white comedian

Those people are dumb because in this context change is good.

That's why I was wondering why Mushu has to be played a black comedian. Honestly, if it were up to me, he wouldn't even be in the movie.

That wouldn't fly. The sidekick is kinda required.

That's because people are addicted to nostalgia. I refuse to believe that a Mulan movie without Mushu would be less successful.

I wonder what will change if the Aladdin remake underperforms.

According to rumors the budget for this movie will be around $300 million. That would be insane, and not very smart of Disney.

I love the original Mulan but it's not that popular.

Geez what are they spending it on? I don’t think even endgame cost that much did it?

No it did. According to Wikipedia the combined budget for IW and Endgame was over $600m.

That doesn't make Mulan's alleged budget any less crazy, though.

Endgame cost over $550 million in total. Over $350 million in production budget and over $200 million in marketing.

That's ridiculous. And that doesn't even include marketing. They must really be betting on this being huge in China to make their money back.

I have seen no one mad cause Will is black especially when one of the popular choices before the role was cast was the guy who played genie on broadway (who is black).

I've see comments talking about Genie sounds ghetto because he did a little Cardi B impression. Will Smith is the one of least ghetto people on Earth.

Guy doesnt even cuss in his raps

And that's Broadway and Theater. A completely different world. One thing I noticed is how when it comes to Theater and Broadway plays, people are more accepting of creative liberties being change for the vision of the director.

Like with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. They changed Hermonine to a black actress. Nobody cared, because its theater and as long as she gave a good performance they accepted it. But when it comes to Hollywood productions... you HAVE to get the ethnicity and look right. It's a must.

With Aladdin all I been hearing is Jim Carrey should have played Genie, hell even Seth Rogan :funny:

They could have always just gotten Eminem.

No they were saying the guy who plays him on broadway should’ve been cast to do him in the movie. I’ve seen that in plenty of places. And the actress who played Hermione in that play did have backlash. That said if they go with Mushu I could see them casting someone like Awkwafina to do a gender swapped version.

As for Mulan that budget is huge but Disney’s got it so whatever.

The budget for this movie is insane. Considering that Disney will only get a fraction of every ticket sold in China, they've got to expect this to do really well there. Aladdin's big box-office numbers are a good sign for Mulan over here, though. But to break even, Mulan is going to need, what, something like 600 million dollars?

Personally, I love the thought of Awkwafina as Mushu - that just sounds so perfect. I cannot stand Kevin Hart.

Yes if we use the rule of thumb "box office covers production cost and home media/ merchandise/ etc. covers marketing" then to cover the 300M production cost, a 600M box office will be needed to break even (though if the movie is decent I don't think it will have trouble flying past that). That'll be enough though, not everything needs to have return on investment like the Avengers movies or Blumhouse horror flicks to be considered a success.

They said he'll be in it, though to what capacity I don't know.

EXCLUSIVE: Phoenix Possibly Replacing Mushu in 'Mulan'; Cast Will Not Sing Classic Songs -

A source close to us that has seen the film reports that a phoenix replaced Mulan’s beloved sidekick Mushu, and that while music from the animated film will be included in the remake, the songs will not be sung by the cast as the music is just instrumentals.

As time progresses, Disney will very likely use test screenings to gauge what changes – if any – need to be made via reshoots and post-production.

That sounds great to me but you know people are going to be mad about it.

The 300m production budget report is probably incomplete since it doesn't talk about the tax re-imbursements. Mulan's principal photography took place in New Zealand and the country offers a minimum 20% tax rebate to international productions plus an additional 5% if the film benefits the local economy.

There is also an added incentive for movies that completes it's post-productions in NZ. I think Disney will benefit from this scheme with the upcoming Avatar movies since WETA has set up their workshops over in NZ to work on the sequels.

The net budget for Mulan is probably going to be closer to 225m when all is said and done. It's still a massive budget but a far more reasonable one.

Wait a minute, I thought it was going to be a musical after they changed their mind about it initially. What happened?

Who knows. Personally I still want Mushu but whatever.
