Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Just watched it. Disclaimer, I've never seen the animated movie but have read the Wikipedia on the actual legend of Mulan. I liked this a lot, almost loved it. 8.9/10 Beautifully shot, great action scenes and great acting. Liu Yifei was far better than I expected. Surprisingly I was more impressed with her during combat training when she got pissed off and showed what she could really do. That look! The only negatives are the somewhat lacking background or moments with her friends. Could've used more of those. Some dialogue was a bit cheesy but not enough to bother me. I shockingly agree with Grace Randolph's review that this was a love letter to Chinese culture and people. I honestly think this might make a lot of money in Chinese theaters. Oh and this scene brought the feelings (if it hasn't been deleted yet):

This is definitely one of the better Disney remakes out there and more than worth the time and money spent. The only other Disney remake that I can say that I really liked was the 2015 version of Cinderella and this is pretty much on par with that IMO. I actually found it refreshing that they didn't follow the original animated film so much, because that's one of the biggest problems that I had with the TLK remake from last year and I'm glad that they didn't do that again here.

I just loved that it felt like its own thing for the most part and very different from what we have gotten in the past. The production values alone made this feel like something special from the cinematography and choreography of the fight scenes and then especially the fantastic set designs and the costumes. The Chinese culture was on full display here and I loved every minute of it.

It was also great just seeing actors like Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jet Li, Tzi Ma and Jason Scott Lee all together in one film even if I could have still used a bit more of Jet Li and Tzi Ma. I even liked Yifei Liu a lot more than I thought I would in the lead role as Mulan. She came off kind of bland in the trailers to me, but in the movie she showed way more personality and emotion than I was expecting and that was a nice surprise.

Anyone feel they wasted their money?

We watched it the other night, we really enjoyed it (my mom even liked some things better than the animated version). I liked the feel that using wire work in the action brought to it. I liked the cast. I loved Jason Scott Lee as the villain, and Gong Li as the Witch. I was good with most of the changes, and I liked the nods to the animated version that they did have

Like that Cri-Kee still existed, just as Cricket and in human form. Also really loved Ming-Na's cameo at the end of the movie

All around enjoyable, I'm glad I 'bought' it.

So is this good? I can't muster any excitement for it.
Yes. Its a really good movie. Very pretty and inspirational. And I'm saying this as someone who didn't enjoy the remake for The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, and live action films like Alice in Wonderland movies and the Maleficent movies.

Go stream it now!

This isn't a criticism, but every time I see your posts in the red font, at first glance I think it's a moderator warning :funny:

I only used the red because its the font color of Mulan's font in the posters. I did the same thing in the F4 threads with the blue font color.

I'm hoping this doesn't bother anyone as I really like using different color fonts.

Yeah I’m going to wait a few days and see if that itch to pay for it is still there. If so, then I’ll go ahead and get it. To be frank, I’m an advocate of releasing movies in theaters and PVOD simultaneously and letting the consumer decide how s/he wants to watch. If me spending the money helps the PVOD process in any way, then I might do it.

Anyone else, who's seen it, get the feeling stuff was cut to fit this under two hours for the theaters? I felt that there was potentially a couple of scenes missing at certain points.

Why am I not surprised the hate channels or Fandom Menace are really hating this? Downvoting almost every positive review on Youtube.

I thought this was pretty good. I can see if you are trying to compare it to the "Animated version" you may not like it as much, and it seems that this is what a lot of people do. If you view it not as a "remake" but as a re-telling of the story of Mulan then I think people enjoy it better.

Rewatching the animated version and I really think they should've kept the spirit/Mushu aspect of it in this film. Mulan lacks someone she can speak openly with so she has to been distant from everyone the entire time. Mushu could've been a human spirit that poses as a soldier to keep an eye on Mulan and fades away when she no longer needs him.
yeah they didnt something somewhat similar with The Witch but they spent most of the film at odds so when she saves Mulan from the arrow it just didnt have any weight imo

Marc Bernardin watched it and talked about it on Fatman Beyond Live (around the 16:30 mark). He thought it was "real good, not great". "Feels like early 2000's House Of Flying Daggers, Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

Yep which is another thing that I loved about it and what got me excited when I saw some of stuff in the later trailers. Damn do I miss those old school wire fu/kung fu movies. This almost felt like a legit throwback to those films of that era and I really dug that about it.

There's not exactly much in terms of content on Disney+ so it's hard to tell. I'd say this, if it was this massive success Disney would be crowing about it. Being beaten by the Simpsons IMO is not exactly a sign it's being watched all that much.
