Do you believe in a higher power/God?

What if it is the very basis of what makes them Christian that he thinks is funny. It would be a fair to say all Christians believe in God and Christ. If it is the idea of someone believing in god that makes him giggle, than it is not a generalization to say he finds all Christians funny.
I think one thing I have hated about a portion of non-religious/athiest people is that when they talk about religion there seems to be an underlying current of sarcasm, smug and a condescending tone to the way they address religion. An almost "religion is for the weak" point of view. It has always made me feel they "don't believe in a god" out of spite rather then logic.

Because it's offensive/disrespectful.

It'd be like if I said I found all black people funny. The idea of someone having black skin, it's funny. Or saying I found all gay people funny. Guys kissing guys? It's hilarious.

Only worse. Because religion is something you believe in and love deeply within yourself. For someone to come around and be little it so quickly and so thoughtlessly, is like a slap in the face.

And I'm not Christian. As it so happens, I've debated four a good 6 hours in the past 24 hours over the legitimacy of Christianity, and why I don't personally believe in it. But through all of that I did it in a respectful, intelligent manner.

Surprisingly. :o

Intuitive,
Read CaptainClown's comment above. It's the tone. Captain Clown pointed out that the one thing he hated "about a portion of non-religious/athiest people is that when they talk about religion there seems to be an underlying current of sarcasm, smug and a condescending tone to the way they address religion". I sensed the same tone in muertaville's post. That's all.

Theology can be such an interesting topic to discuss and all I'm asking is for you guys, both sides, believers and non-believers, to be respectful in your discussion. No need to be condescending or sarcastic and certainly there's no need to mock each other's faiths, or lack of.

It's easy for the right sort of non-theist to be frustrated by the right sort of believer, because the philosophy of faith is often incompatible with the outlook of a non-theist.

Or, think of it this way: I could right a ridiculous essay on the determination of morality, and a certain sort of theist might say "I just follow the Bible because I have faith," and that would be considered an approach of equal validity to many. That drives me crazy. That's a pretty good way to get me to start being sarcastic and condescending.

Exactly. Thank you.

Never got the whole ''Homosexuals will go to hell'' thing. Homosexuals can't help it, it's in the genes. It's like telling a black person to be white. If God is meant to save you from being a homosexual, then how does God do this?

Don't get me wrong, I believe in Jesus and a higher power, but somethings I have to believe are false in the bible.

I am perfectly capable of conducting a rational discussion, and I was only pointing out that finding Christians funny is not NECESSARILY a generalization. It may be disrespectful but NOT a generalization.

That being said, it's not at all the same as finding all black people funny. I find it amusing that people believe in magic and whatnot. I also laugh at people who believe in UFOs, Bigfoot, and Nessie(and they are much more likely than God). I think it's all very silly. I respect people's rights to believe whatever they want, but I don't have to respect the beliefs themselves.

But what if he purchased them from their parents?

Fair game then. Make those suckas worship you

But I thought God's word was eternal and relevant for all time periods! You aren't claiming that the Bible is outdated, are you? Because Christians are not supposed to disagree with what the Bible says, and the Bible clearly claims that I should be considered Christlike by any slave I wish to keep.

Which means, it would be very Christian of me to go out and kidnap a schoolbus filled with children and turn them into slaves. It would be very un-Christian of you to question my motives or consider me a wrongdoer.

I sure am claiming that the Bible is outdated. I most definitely believe in questioning. I don't believe every word of the Bible at this point. If you did that in a 3rd world country, I think it'd go over better; but you can't do that in America.

Here's a thought: There have been hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament detailing the coming of the Messiah. Yet, the chosen people did not recognize his coming… if you are a Christian. Given that Christians cherish the teaching of the New Testament more, would they recognize the Second Coming?

I don't think the scientific community has proved/confirmed this yet. Still just 1 explanation

Are you asking if Jews would recognize Jesus' 2nd Coming?

Sorry, I mean both Christians and Jews alike... since Jews are still waiting.

I should hope a Christian would recognize Jesus coming again haha. This is just my opinion, but I think Jews are going to be a lot harder to convince. The J-Man is gonna have to bust out some magic to bring some of them around. And even then, not all of them will think it's the real deal :(

That's the point I wanted to make with this post... how would one know, given if one believe what Christians says, the Jews totally missed the ball... and he was suppose to be their Messiah.

Ha, a ton of horrible crap is gonna happen before Heyzeus actually comes down. You'd have to be really stubborn to not recognize him when the time comes

I believe 144,000 Jews will recognize the 2nd coming.......as far as Christians.......well.....................that's a wait and see.

I like trumpets......so I'm sure I'll catch the hint.:cwink:

Well.. The Jews are still God's chosen people... Hopefully that counts for something?

I... I...

Never mind.

:(

Ok, I'm saying with all the prophecies detailing the coming of the Messiah and many of that time & world missed it, according to Christian doctrine... what makes anyone believe many would recognize the Second Coming, or the Arrival according to Jews?

They was looking for the Messiah as people are today.

Yeah, I'm pretty good on recognizing all the Apocalyptic signs. So if I happen to live through the end of times and I'm not raptured; I'll know what's going on immediately. Then I'll cry and hope I don't get sucked up in the earthquake

I'm christian, I guess I would be classified as "nondenominational"....The church I sometimes go to is nondenominational.......I don't necessarily agree with "all" of any religious doctrine, but I think its a personal thing, and to each his/her own.
Same here.

That's one thing that worries me. Waking up to an empty house , clothes everywhere, planes and cars crashing :(

Yeah, more reason to get saved and hopefully get raptured. Living through the end times sounds exhilarating and all that, but I'd rather be watching from up above...hangin out w/ Samson :o
