I know this is kind of left-field, but seeing as though a love story was not established in BB, and Rachel was more of a childhood friend than a lover, wouldn't it have made more sense to just eliminate the kiss at the end, and make her character Harvey Dent instead?

- childhood friends
- long absence from each other
- Dent becomes DA of Gotham

They could have fit this in nicely into the film, and given Harvey pre-Two-Face a good amount of time before his transformation in TDK. Think about it.... we would've invested TWO movies getting to know Harvey before he transforms. Now, in TDK, it might feel rushed.

And why was Rachel needed anyway? Honestly. Not to beat a dead horse... but what was the point? It feels like they just threw in a random female character because "that's what you're supposed to do". It made it feel so hollywood. A male dominant Batman movie isn't all that bad... is it?

I think this was the original intention, but the Studio said there had to be a love interest in the movie.

Oh well..

it would've been a sausagefest otherwise

Yeah, and as a Blockbuster movie, I understand that. But many issues of Batman and episodes of TAS had just guys in em too.

As TC said, it would have been an interesting relationship. Like of like Peter and Harry in spider-man.

When I watch the movie, I like to pretend that's who it is. I get a little, uh, confused when Bruce and Harvey kiss, but on the whole I like it better my way.

Perhaps we have discovered "the twist": Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes are the same person!

Dent is Dawes! DAWES IS DENT!!!

. . . . . . . .I KISSED A MAN!!!!!

"I know all there is to know . . .about the CRYING GAME!!!"

That's kind of a copout when you take into consideration that the primary villain of the film, in the comics, has a daughter who Batman becomes romantically involved with. If they were really that pressed to include a love interest, Talia would have been spades above than Rachel Dawes.

Had the film taken this approach Begins may have actually achieved the greatest that some claim for it, and TDK would, as you suggest, be stronger for it.

A little role-playing, eh??

I really don't think Dent would have fit into Rachel's role as a childhood friend. I'd rather have a new character then character weirdly squeezed into a role.

Well I wouldn't like Harvey kissing Bruce and be childhood. Rachel much better character and I would liked Harvey least had a cameo like when Rchael says to Finch "lets take it to Harvey Dent"

I think it would have worked. I always felt Rachael was out of place character-wise when she rips the wheel and brings Bruce to Falcone's. Or the way she has very little sympathy for Bruce over that whole situation. I'd believe it more if it was a guy. One driven enough to go the job of a DA. Now, if it were Dent and he was a bit unsympathetic and focused then it would work. I'd trust him to carry that kind of swagger in every scene. Rachael doesn't.

Also, I'd imagine then being childhood friends who grew apart. Grew up in Gotham and can lay claim to wanting to save it. Somewhere between aqquantinces and friends. Sympathetic enough to look out for each other here and there. Not really meeting eye to eye again until TDK with Batman/Gordon/Dent. I think that would be cool. Meeting again when both, or rather just Batman at that time, realize they each still care for Gotham. It would make it deeper and more resonate when Dent becomes one of the city's most feared criminals, and takes it by blood. More of a tragedy.

finch could of been dent.

But what happens is in BB finch is killed, and Dent replaces him for TDK.

For the first hour or so I couldn't work out why Finch wasn't just Dent. Then I found out. Still, I think the film would've been better off if Finch was Dent, and simply wasn't killed.

District Attorney Finch should have been Dent (throw in a little more characterization and it would of been perfect). Think about it. Was there really a point to having a district attorney murdered and then bring in Dent in the sequel as his replacement? No, not really. Why not just make Finch Dent and not have him killed, then develop him more in the sequel?

Dont make Dawes Dent. Then Batman Begins would have been an all-male-show, and that would of seemed weird. It would of felt like Bruce Wayne had NO females (friends, associates, lovers, etc.) in his life.

hey, just cause the guy was focused on training to become Batman doesn't mean he didn't...you know...feel the urge for some female companionship. No one is THAT obsessed! hehe
