In a way it's a pity venom made so much money. With rothman not being a fan of superheros and disney aquiring fox, i think there was a real chance that sony and disney could have swapped some ip's. Talking aliens and predator etc... for spidey rather than their superhero stuff.

Am not sure Alien and predator are franchises that Sony would want over Spider-man and Venom.

Which would you prefer? 2 characters from one franchise that usually make over 700+ mil or the franchises that didn't do great on their last 2 film releases making under 300 mil each?

Spider-Man is a huge toy seller. What if Sony trades the toys rights for movie rights? It won’t happen but yea. I wish they’d get the tv rights back tho. They made the greatest spidey show to date and Disney has a horrible animation division now

I have to say, I'm a little worried about this. The success of Venom can be taken two ways by Sony: ONE, that they don't need Spidey to make money or TWO, that they don't need the Disney deal anymore. I dearly hope they go with the first option.

I do think that they've discussed the film series future beyond Far From Home. At this point I expect anything to happen and I am really just feeling down about Sony possibly ruining this deal with Marvel.

I think this Spider-Man needs at least a third film to cap off a trilogy. If we don't get that, I have nothing else to say.

I'm not worried at all...although those concerns are not necessarily completely unfounded, I think the reality, from a business model between the two, is fairly baseless, given today's climate, direction & consolidation in the film & tv industry, globally.

A lot of these fears come from Amy Pascal saying that the deal ends after the Homecoming sequel, and that it may not ever happen again.

Sony can have their cake and eat it and if they can then why wouldn't they?

Marvel have a 5 or 6 film plan for spidey (those include civil war and infinity war), so Sony can let them finish their run and then do what they want with spidey after. its not like they lose the film rights and it also allows them to space out their usage of the character, which allows for more longer term potential for the future.

Right now they can play with Venom and Co, and get to spidey later on when the time comes to it.

In the short run they don’t need the deal. In the long run though it’s going to be very difficult sustaining interest in the universe of one hero and his villains. Even the MCU hasn’t done more than 3 films with any one hero yet, even Iron Man whose last film made $1.2B.

I expect, we will see Spidey in the Sonyverse, in some capacity.

SONY might have 2 non-MCU Spider-Man related films that make over 800M this year after seeing the reception to Into The Spider Verse.

I think they'll still keep Spidey in the MCU though, it's helping build his other characters.

I agree...but i still expect it to happen, however way it's looked at. Spidey in the Sonyverse in some capacity or the Sonyverse adjuctive to the MCU, in some capacity, somehow.

If they do it, yeah, expect a lot of deserved backlash.

No, I think it's pretty much what I think. Kinda naive to think people wouldn't have much of a problem if Sony were to take out Spidey from the MCU and do the same mistakes with him over and over.

Well its no different from no one will see a Venom movie without Spider-man... not as many people cared as you may think. and when we have got into the spiderverse which seems to be getting very good reviews now so thats a bright spot for Sony.

Will there be backlash? yes sure... will it be as huge as you would assume? probably not.

Agree to disagree then.

Venom has tons of issues but still managed to be enjoyable due to the director and the Tom Hardy/Venom banter. I don't attribute any of these qualities to Avi Arad.

What big mistakes do you think Sony keeps doing? Cramming in too many villains? Having too much or not enough comic relief?

Well, there's the matter of creative meddling, what you mentioned about them repeating Spider-Man 3's mistakes in ASM2, as well as the fact that they still want to create a cinematic universe of their own which means they've learned little to nothing.

What are they meant to learn from the cinematic universe thing? There is nothing to learn there because venom was their first take on that and it was a success

No, they pretty much had plans to kickstart an entire Spider-Man cinematic universe in the ASM days, spin-offs and all (hence why ASM2 was so crammed with villains and references to Sinister Six. If you want, you could watch Midnight Edge's videos covering it to understand the whole process).

Yeah, not to mention they made a deal with Marvel Studios which is them acknowledging their mistakes. So it's rather amusing that people ask you to list their mistakes, aside from the fact that the films were making less and less with each outing in NA before the uptick in 2017.

Venom felt like a stand-alone film not a universe film. So yea

I find it hilarious that once Sony makes a decent venom movie the last 11 yrs of ruining the brand mean nothing now. And Sony should just carry on and do what they are doing despite what happened last time. Before marvel Spider-Man was being out shined by the likes of rocket and groot that’s on Sony. Why trust them after making a decent venom movie that wasn’t anything spectacular? I’m still wary of them.
