I think most Doctors would have tried to save that soldier even though it was hopeless. I could see Nine, Ten and Eleven for example trying (unsuccessfully) to hack the security drones and then beating themselves up over it afterwards.
Twelve is probably going to be more effective in situations like that since he had the foresight to use his death to give them a trail to a safe zone but it might result in people less willing to place their confidence in him once the body count starts rising.
