Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread - Part 19

Capaldi has confirmed this is his last season. I wish he'd stop calling himself "Doctor Who". Being such a big fan, you'd think he know.

Not a shock with the new show runner coming on board to be honest. Now we have to suffer through the female and black rumours yet again though.

Followed by the half-assed outrage when they announce the new Doctor and said rumours turn out to be false, probably.
It was a certainty he would leave with Moffat, this just confirms it.

I really do not care who they cast as the Doctor, provided whoever they are is good at the job. I really would not mind a woman, or a black woman or even an middle eastern woman who would really piss off the traditionalists and nationalists. :woot:

It's going to be another pasty white guy in his early 30's who we've all seen in bit roles.

"Oh yeah. He did a small role in Homeland"

etc etc

Bill can feel free to leave at the end of this season too!

I'm thinking the show might want to try and recapture some of that teen audience again, that most likely disappeared once Matt Smith left the role.

I've been binging WHO starting with Eccleson, currently in middle of Capaldi's season 8. It's wild some of the things I missed in some of the old episodes.

Make the Doctor a woman and I might actually watch the damn show.

Sad to hear that Capaldi is leaving. I found the show just before eighth season so I knew that Eccelston, Tennant and Smith were just "temporary". That makes this my first true regeneration experience. I hope it's a woman.

Said it before and I'll say it again, the new Doctor should be Gurindher Chadha

I have a feeling this will be the biggest mistake in Peter Capaldi's career. He'll regret leaving Doctor Who for the rest of his life, because his incarnation could easily span more series than three. He should have easily been the longest-running Doctor of the series, beating Tom Baker's record.

I mean, couldn't that have been the case for Tennant as well? He was very beloved as the Doctor.

David Tennant was (and still is) my favourite Doctor but I think he left at the right time. There wasn't much more he could do in the role IMO. Peter Capaldi's the opposite - it feels like he's only just started.

Wasn't there a rumour a few months back that with the next Doctor the BBC want someone more like the Tennant version? I think the problem the BBC have had with Moffat is that as time went on the show became more and more aimed at Doctor Who fans, whereas during the Tennant years they were getting a wider range of viewers.

I see Ben Whishaw is a favourite with the bookies, I do see him as the kind actor that the BBC might like, a "sexy" Tennant type.

Of course there will always be the usual speculation over if it will be a female Doctor but I don't see it atm simply as I think the BBC will want to try to keep things safe, work to rebuild the brand popularity before they experiment.

Still, casting a woman in the role will pretty much spike interest in the franchise overnight, especially if they cast someone like Hayley Atwell.

Same for me, Capaldi has very much become my Doctor, wish he'd stay on longer, but I knew what I was getting into with the show, sad to hear he'll leave, but excited to see who comes next, I also wouldn't mind it being a woman, the timing feels right for it to happen.

Y'know, I just realized the last 3 doctors each did 3 full seasons but over 4 years. Tennant's last year was all specials, Smith's last season was split in two, and Capaldi got an off year.

They're following Patrick Troughton's 'three series' rule to Peter Davison.

I say this as a fan of his, but...

the thing is that they basically used him developing into the character as the story arc of his first season, where David (an most of the others) really only took an episode or two to develop into there own version character

so Peter didn't really come into his own until his season

if that makes sense?

that's also why I think a lot of people didn't take to his version right, away
(his character was unsure of himself, which made some viewer unsure of him)

That's why there's plenty of mileage left in his Doctor though. I hope Peter Capaldi does some Big Finish.

I can't say I saw/heard that but from a ratings pov the nu-Who series was at its height with Tennant (10mil vs less than 5mil for Peter), so I could see them looking for that same mold: Younger, handsome (without being model level good looking), and can put their own quirky spin on the character. Basically something for the ladies, young and older.

Someone like Ben Whishaw would fit that model so I'm not surprised he is on the bookies radar.

It's cynical I know, but the sad truth is I do know some lady friends who loved the show with Tennant (I remember a couple having a lengthy discussion on how sad his leaving episode was), were not so keen on Smith (not as good looking I suppose), and some I know did stop watching with Capaldi. I can't say I'm keen on them going for a 'something for everyone' type, rather than looking for something more unique, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is where they go when Capaldi regenerates.

They're following Patrick Troughton's 'three series' rule to Peter Davison.

And I just remembered something else: David and Matt both got a total of 4 Christmas specials, and each regenerated in the last one. So if they follow that pattern, Capaldi will get one more special and regenerate at the end.

Actually 3 seasons is a good amount to get comfortable in the role

-1st year introduce the doctor. Work out all the spots that need to be ironed out

-2nd year get more comfortable. The previous doctor's era is slowly fading away or almost all gone.

-3rd year. The actor is comfortable and has made it his own.

We really get a beginning, middle and end.

They've already confirmed that Peter Capaldi will regenerate in this year's Christmas Special.

I've never thought about it like that. Still think Peter Capaldi could have still had a few more series left though.
