That's the heist episode, right? I've been looking forward to that one.

One tiny complaint I have about the "world building" element of New Who is that futuristic soldiers often look like contemporary British squaddies.

That only bothers me when episodes take place really really far into the future. I can accept the conceit that uniforms might not change much in the next couple of centuries, but I'm pretty sure (as an example) the Church soldiers are from 3,000 years in the future.

I want it made perfectly clear that even if this heist movie episode is utterly awful in every possible way I'll still love it because heist moives are super fun and because I want to bang the **** out of Keeley Hawes.

I hope the overall reception to "Listen" was positive, because I want them to do something really ballsy and make a historical episode without any monsters. They haven't done one of those since the 5th Doctor, and before that was the 2nd Doctor.

I liked Listen up until the end with Clara and Baby Hartnell.

The idea that The Doctor's paranoia is actually sparked by Clara grabbing a Young Doctors leg was pretty good.

But then Moffat had to go and make Clara essentially responsible for The Doctor's future outlook on life, just like she's responsible for saving him all throughout his life, just like she's essentially responsible for Gallifrey's survival. If Moffat also weren't so fond of constantly reminding us of Clara's control issues, she would come off as a Mary Sue, imo.

I didn't see that at all. Part of the genius of it was that we don't actually know why he was out in that barn. If he was being attacked by a monster under his bed then why would bring a bed out to the barn?

The Doctor was just scared.

And Clara is no more important in forming the Doctor than the Daleks are when he said, visiting Skaro made him understand who he was.

Something told to you while you're half asleep is hardly going to shape your entire outlook on life. Besides, a good portion of the Doctor's character (as we know it) was also shaped by several other companions he's had in the past. He basically got his sense of morality from Ian & Barbara. I'm sure working for UNIT for 5 years shaped his view of the military (though the Time War gave him another view of the military). His moments of being kind and nurturing come from being a dad and a granddad (and a surrogate dad to several of his companions). His arrogance likely comes from being raised on Gallifrey, but what humility he has comes from many of his companions keeping him in check or impressing him with their own skills/knowledge.

Clara didn't give him all that via whispered monologue while he was half-asleep. She basically told him to embrace his fears, and the Doctor's reaction to his own fears is only a small part of his character.

I strongly agree. I have long thought that a Christmas episode set in Cromwell's England, where he as Lord Protector had banned any Christmas festivities, would be brilliant. The Major-Generals would be monstrous enough.

I have 3 big problems with the episode.

It never really explained why many people have that dream.
It never explained what was on the bed in Rupert's room (or is the Doctor going to go back and hide under the blanket?).
It never explained what was banging on the ship.

Other than those big, gaping, sinkholes in the plot, it was fine.

If it was a thing then there would be no plot holes...

Just saying that if Moffat hadn't wanted to big up Clara into some kind of ******** amazing companion then it would have worked better.

(1) Did that need to be explained? The premise of the episode was that it was either an unusual coincidence, or something else. It could just be that we are paranoid when alone, and our dream reflects that.

(2) That was deliberately left open, so that The Doctor's curiosity would be sustained until the scene at the end of time.

(3) It wasn't explained because The Doctor was incapacitated before he could find out.

I really don't think any of these qualify as a plot hole, since the whole point of the episode was an exploration of the relationship between fear, loneliness and paranoia. The theme would have gone up in smoke if the question of whether there was something there or not received a definite answer.

Sometimes a scriptwriter can choose to leave a matter open, without that being a mistake or a bad creative choice.

The second half of series 8 is sounding so good, it feels like it dosen't even matter that the first five episodes leaked.

Interesting: I'm rewatching Listen, and Danny Pink mentions at the beginning of their date that he had "family stuff" to deal with, and yet later on we see that he grew up in an orphanage. I wonder if that means anything.

You don't understand what a plot hole is do you?

A plot hole is a gap in the narrative where characters and events proceed without proper motivation/ability to do so in the way they have.

Didn't the Doctor straight up say, at the time, that the thing under the blanket could've also just been another kid playing a prank of Rupert? Of course, the audience is supposed to disregard that because of the Doctor's main theory about a hiding creature, but there's your explanation right there.

And there is no explanation as to why everybody has that dream. I mean, plenty of kids dream that there's something under their beds in real life. That doesn't mean there's a deeper explanation for it beyond pure psychology.
