Superman Returns "Does he still stand for Truth, Justice, All of that..."

I know right, lol... I mean, the costume and colors alone offend some people here. Why don't we just see him dress up as the Easter Bunny when he's Superman. Like seriously, has our world gotten ridiculously pc?

I'd rather he's say "truth, justice, and kittens"

everybody likes kittens.

Why does Perry White not say the "American Way" to finish it off? Is Singer thinking that it sound corny, or that they just want to neglect the American metaphor for the character? I was wondering, and thought that it would have sounded better if Perry White would have said that instead of "All of that"... Is it just me or a select few, that rather them acknowledge the "American Way" aspects of the character? I mean this is a 1940's / Fleicher-ish Superman...the "American" metaphors and symbolism were the strongest in that mythos.

Superman doesn't stand for the American way anymore. He stands for the way of Truth and Justice, but not any one country. He's the world's hero, not America's.

Well, the 'American Way' has changed alot since he first said it back in the 40's.

Ask a hundred people worldwide what 'the American way' is and you'll get mainly negative answers.

Exactly.

And you'd find that those people are ignorant towards the basic principles that America was founded upon, because the 'American Way' refers to such ideas, not what Bush has done to the world in his turn as President.

Actually, you'll tend to find that they're incredibly aware of it, because America's own politicians spout lines ad nauseum about those ideals. What you'll also find is that most countries think Americans don't begin to live up to those ideals, or try to. And much of the time, they're right.

By now, it should be obvious that Singer and his writers don't buy "The American Way" aspect of Superman. "Truth and justice" is plenty, as far as I'm concerned. "The American Way" has unfortunately come to represent something less than impressive as an ideal.

heretic

my opinion is that even if they kept the american way in there, its all subjective. It doesn't mean he only protects america to me. It means he believes in what america is or was all about and that is he values everyone equally because america was founded on that belief. It may not be how it is but its how it should be and as an American Superman should honor that...:supes:

still, no big deal.

Like me. My country is lost, and it's "way" is not the path of the Jedi. ;)

Singer argues that he wants Superman to be a hero for everyone, and that is why the American way is taken out.

As a non-American I must admit that I like that. I want him to be a hero for me too.

this is a trailer....half the phrases and sayings in this trailer will probably be different from the final film...

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Superman!

I understand the 3rd guy being excited, it's superman and all, but why do the first two people get so excited about seeing a bird and a plane in the sky?

the first guy's a birdwatcher and the second one is tattoo from fantasy island.

Hmm, great thread. America is the greatest country in the world. To this day, and for ages to come, millions the world over will dream of living here. If they are leaving (or even dissing) "...the American way" part out of this film then this movie is a complete fraud.

Well yeah, that is his classic catch phrase...or cliche used to describe him. The fact that they aren't recognizing it is BOGUS. It's not just about being an American, Superman single handedly REPRESENTS the American Dream. Comming from nothing (immigrant) to something (Superman). It's synonamous with the character...along with "it's a bird, it's a plane, no its Superman"... or "Faster than a speeding bullet, etc."

oh give me a break. don't you think you're going a little too far with the "american dream"? Superman definitely does not embody that.

I find it funny how Superman's been made into this big American icon but he was actually created by Canadians...few people seem to know that or neglect that fact.

One canadian, sir. The other guy (the one who is credited for CREATING him) was a Cleveland, OH native.

I feel 2 things

1) it simply wasnt said to show how perry doesnt believe/care about what superman says(given the dissapearence)

2) the american way bit was stupid given the time periods. American idea is good on paper but its actions are far from something everyone should follow or adopt.

Like some of the other's have said... The whole "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" tagline is kinda dragged and overused in my opinion. Considering the current status of America in the world arena, due to certain policy decisions, I'm glad that Singer chose to avoid it. Superman should be a world Icon. A citizen of the entire world. Limiting him to the bounds of a country, and setting the bar isn't profitable for Warner Bros. The movie is going to premiere worldwide. Now that the whole "American way..." aspect has been avoided, maybe a kid somewhere in Africa, or in the Oceania continent can imagine the hero of the world rescuing him from the villain that he finds menacing...

Are you serious? That is a legitimate metaphor within the Superman mythos.

it's actually the original central metaphor for the entire concept of superman, saw it in some documentary a while back. He is the ultimate immigrant, making his dream come true, with the gifts that he brings from his old home, to his new... or some mumbo jumbo like that

But you can still have him be a world wide hero, and still encompass the classic cliche. Does it really offend you that much? Superman always will, and has been about reflecting the CLASSIC IDEALS (not current politics) of what the United States of America is all about. Superman as a character, is basically how America VIEWS ITSELF, and how it should be. Maybe leaving that stuff in there, could be a desperate attempt to help inspire people of not only this world, but of this country to reach for the highest standard. The standard where we can say, "The American Way". Because, obviously it is still the place where people have the opportunity to come from nothing and develop into SOMETHING. As I said before, Superman also embodies the 'American Dream' which is virtually similar to the 'American Way'.
