Dr. Lecter Invites you to Dinner. The ''Hannibal'' Thread - Part 1

Yeah, I really believe at this point all this mess is about one of these two reasons:

1) They don't want to announce yet that they WON'T renew it, in fear of audiences losing interest in watching the rest of the episodes (and they need viewers)

2) It's a weird, sadist marketing trick of NBC and the "Hannibal" creators (who I presume already know it will be renewed, but pretend otherwise), in order to get attention from audiences and media.

On NBC's end most likely. On the company's end, there seems to be talks about other deals that are in the works. NBC's fall and mid line ups are already booked, they're not just going to suddenly cancel a mid-season show they have a contract now with to throw Hannibal in there. Meaning the only NBC slot left for Hannibal is summer.... This is why it's more likely that the company is in talks with other distribution companies now than rotating around NBC, NBC is more or less booked right now except people are thinking summer?

To be fair, "Deadline" in its' article merely mentions that there are cable channel/s that "expressed interest", not that the producers/distributors are in actual talks..

There are no talks going on and Hannibal has not been shopped as the producers are waiting on a renewal at NBC

Then there's probably inside "what if" talks while not shopping it around. And interest expressed without being approached? Is even better. As said, NBC's fall and mid line-up have already been announced meaning the only hope left is summer. So the chances are extraordinary thin. NBC isn't just going to suddenly take something off the mid line-up and if they do that would be an extremely rare thing to happen. Just hopefully they have NBC in a place where they can get a statement before it's too late to go elsewhere. The only reason I see them remaining with NBC at this point is either because 1) more money, 2) more audience, 3) NBC has them by a ball and chain because otherwise I'm pretty sure, yet not positive, that time is running out on those channels that have expressed interest. And part of me wonders if NBC knows this.

I don't understand this practice, but some companies acquire scripts and projects to ensure that they don't continue. Possible future competition to something else. I'm just hoping NBC isn't being that kind of dick to them here.

Watched Red Dragon and I loved the all the little nods the show has to this movie

Why do I think Jim Caviesel (sp?) would be amazing as Dollarhyde? Hmmm

I know it'd never happen, especially on a TV show, but in a hypothetical movie remake of Red Dragon, Tom Hardy would kick some ass as Dolarhyde.

Chilton would be taking that "personal relationship with Christ" thing a bit literally.

I already have a theory that everyone in the world except myself wants to see Tom Hardy in every role ever. Personally I already have a hard enough time buying in him 'tough guy' parts, Mad Max for example is going to especially difficult to accept. Hardy, from my perspective, has a really friendly face. He's a good actor, and I enjoy his presence on screen, but I've yet to see him in a tough guy role where he's completely convincing -Tom Hardy just has this constant look like you'd be happy to let him date your sister, a genuinely nice guy.

Dolarhyde needs a level of childlike tenderness to him, which Hardy could do very well without even trying. When it came to the scenes where he has to act the monster though, it would all fall apart. All that said, I recognize this isn't a popular opinion and the majority would undoubtedly agree with you.

What? This doesn't fill you with terror??

lol, Hardy does tend to be rather jovial looking in person, but I still think he can be intimidating onscreen.

Paul Bettany was very nearly Dolarhyde in Red Dragon, by the way. What do you guys think of that?

By the way, speaking of people I can't take seriously as being intimidating....Derek Jacobi was considered for Hannibal in The Silence of the Lambs.

I can't see Jacobi being menacing at all. He's just not an intimidating person in the slightest, to me.

Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall were also considered.

Gene Hackman or especially Robert Duvall would have been insanely awesome. Has Robert Duvall ever played such a menacing character before?

Bear in mind I think they were possibly looking at more bankable stars, which Hackman and Duvall were much more compared to little known Hopkins. Didn't Hackman buy the rights himself or a production company did because he wanted to play the role himself?

Yes, Hackman wanted to direct and play Hannibal.

Michelle Pfeiffer was offered Clarice, but turned it down because she found the material too disturbing.

Ed Harris was offered Crawford but turned it down because he didn't find him interesting and would have rather played Hannibal.

that makes sense. Crawford probably looked boring on paper, but Scott Glenn played him kind of like a creep. There was weird sexual tension between him and Clarice.

In the book, Hannibal is right and Crawford is attracted to Clarice.

The sexual tension between Clarice and Crawford isn't nearly as creepy as the sexual tension between Clarice and Hannibal.

It makes me feel like she's got some Daddy issues, considering Crawford and Hannibal are both a lot older than her.

I think one of the eerie things about The Silence of the Lambs is almost every character--Hannibal, Clarice, Crawford, Jame Gumb, Chilton--seems to have something weird about them.

Mandy Patinkin was considered for Manhunter before Brian Cox was cast. Can you imagine?!

True, but what I meant was Crawford's creepiness was a little more covert and subtle. You had to read between the lines. Without that subtlety, Hannibal's claim would seem like a chap trick to get in her head. What really places any doubt in Clarice and the audience is Glenn's performance, which to me makes him an interesting character
