Am I the only one who enjoyed Hannibal Rising, the book? The movie was dreadful but I thought the book was great.

I haven't read the book, but I don't mind the movie as it's own thing. As part of the Hannibal series it's garbage, by itself however it's still pretty dumb, but I can sit and enjoy it well enough.

At least we can take solace in the fact that the TV series Hannibal won't have his origins in WW2 -Mads Mikkelsen is only in his forties after all, and the show is set in the modern day. Hopefully there's no war related angle to his origin.

It was definitely interesting, to say the least, but mostly because it was about a character we know and love.

I, for one, prefer my horror icons to NOT have sympathetic backgrounds, but whatever.

Sympathetic backgrounds are realistic IMO. Everybody was a kid at one time. They got it right with Freddy though, he was just ****ed from the jump lol

This started from an abused kid, a battered infant... My heart bleeds for him, as a child. Someone took a kid and manufactured a monster. At the same time, as an adult, he's irredeemable. He butchers whole families to pursue trivial fantasies. As an adult, someone should blow the sick **** out of his socks. Does that sound like a contradiction to you, Jack? Does this kind of thinking make you uncomfortable?

But they're not always good. Rob Zombie gave his Michael Myers a fairly realistic, sympathetic background, but it robbed the character of the mystique he had with Carpenter.

I'm a fan of what Zombie did, especially with his sequel, but his Myers wasn't sympathetic at all. I've never understood why people say that. He was a horrible person.

Sympathetic in the way that you kind of understand how he got that way with his upbringing. There was something fantastic about the original where he apparently had a happy, normal childhood and then snapped for really no reason at all.

Sympathetic backgrounds aren't always bad, but there is something much more frightening about a person with no reason to be evil other than he truly wants to be and IS pure evil, rather than someone who was made that way through a tragedy. Many sociopaths like Hannibal have no reason to be homicidal, other than that they simply are. I like that much better than "My beloved sister was eaten so now I'll eat people too! They made me the way I am!"

I wasn't meaning I like it necessarily. It isn't the worst. And my opinion on the Zombie's Halloween has always been, it was good for the first 30 minutes until it became every other Halloween movie. Michael wasn't really sympathetic at all, as sympathetic as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold maybe

Idgaf that is one of the greatest lines in television history. I mean for real, that's right ****ing up there with some of the Joker's best lines in TDK and this is just TV! I keep telling people movies suck compared to tv dramas nowadays but everyone thinks I'm the crazy one

But Game of Thrones victory was expected, and because of that it was overshadowed by NBC’s HANNIBAL which won total of 6 awards, including Lead Drama Actor and Supporting Drama Actor. The series also did well in the tech field with wins for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing and Contemporary Production Design.

Bravo for "Hannibal"! I think the fact that a brand new show and both its' leading actors (I refuse to say Mads is supporting hehe) won many awards, is indicative of its' high reputation. I just hope that the "recognition" goes on with some nominations and even wins in the Emmys and/or Golden Globes, because, alas, these are the awards that actually matter in the industry..

Weird as it seems, with him being the titular character, I really do feel like Will is the series lead. Which, granted, doesn't mean I'd consider Mads supporting, but still...

Lets remember Hannibal was only a supporting character in Red Dragon and Silence. He has a huge presence over those stories, but is not the focal point if the stories whatsoever. Hence "supporting actor" for Mads and Hopkins.

Comforting, sure. Doesn't necessarily make it the "status quo" for all killers, nor does it make their motivations any more interesting.

Are you? Would any of us be? It's certainly happened, historically. Remember the "Craigslist killer"? I imagine there are many active killers hiding in plain sight in today's society (like Hanmibal) who have no reason to kill other than their own personal interest or mental imbalance. All murderers werent "born in blood" like Dexter, or abused in a white trash environment like Rob Zombie's Michael Myers.

I'm sitting down and watching all of Season 1 today. I'm on episode 9 right now. I'm continually surprised with the quality of this show.

Just finished the first season. I'm really excited to see where it goes next, I just hope that they tone down or "cure" Will's psychosis in season 2 because it started to annoy me a little bit towards the end.

Yeah, as I said before, that whole schtick was getting old fast. It was almost like in every other scene, Will was hallucinating and screwing something up. I understand the purpose of it on the grand scheme of things, but it quickly became redundant.
