The tomatometer doesn't really matter anymore,
we know the movie is good, and we know the film will make a lot of money,
the movie is successful.
Tomato meter matters because studios now use the Rotten Tomato score now as a marketing tool. It's an industry standard and it's become a major talking point among audiences now. It's widely used.
Marvel Studios has never produced a film starting with Iron Man 2008 that's scored an actual "Rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes. Very few studios can claim that. Pixar most definitely can't.
The good reviews at least set a good precedent for Doctor Strange ahead of its opening domestic weekend. It's already done well overseas, but a high Rotten Tomato score gives it even bigger momentum.
Rotten Tomatoes is never guarantee the movie is going to do better, but it always helps. Even if the movie does disappointing business, a high RT score still gives the idea that the film was well received by critics and possibly fans, it just didn't find a wider audience.
Second of all, Doctor Strange has generally been a C-level character over the years. Marvel's now getting to explore a lot more obscure lesser known characters on film. To make a movie starring Doctor Strange that could get better reviews than a movie with Batman and Superman and also do competitive box office is a pretty big statement that Marvel is not to be taken lightly.
