No, Rivalry makes sense. If you go with his Friendship path, you're agreeing with him all the way - so that would be a betrayal. Assuming Rivalry, you've been telling him he's wrong, so this is his seeing the light.
I had been playing through the game with Fenris, Aveline, and Varric with my melee rogue, but apparently I bugged the Fenris romance by having a one-time fling with Isabela, so I scrapped that game.
Isabela isn't anymore a defensive character than a rogue Hawke, to be honest. Hawke actually winds up with a few more offensive moves via specializations, but won't ever have the group-backstab that Isabela has. Pretty simple, max Isabela's Swashbuckler tree and she can probably evade-tank anything that doesn't auto-hit and take out entire groups of enemies with the group-backstab ability.
Isabela was my Blood Mage's MVP and then some, easily.
