now dont get me wrong i'm still excited for this movie

I can get people being on board with the movie and wanting to defend it. At the same time, the reason there's been criticisms against this film is because a white actress was cast in the role of a predominantly Japanese character. That's why people give a **** at this point.

Additionally, it's sort of shed light on poor Hollywood practices and racist practices when it comes to casting. This movie would probably be getting less attention over the issue if it wasn't such a thing in the past. Case in point, casting directors wouldn't even consider Asian American or Japanese American actors for the Light Yagami role in Death Note. In The Last Airbender movie, M. Night Shymalan and Frank Marshall cast white actors in the lead roles for characters who were of a visibly ethnic type in the show. And no, I'm not referring to making the Fire Kingdom Indian and Middle Eastern instead of oriental/Asian. I'm referring to Katarra, Sokka and Ang, the show's main trio.

Knowing that she's been changed to a white character doesn't really erase the problem at hand. I'm not saying you shouldn't see the movie or that it will be awful. But for the people who are upset over this, it's not a matter of "The Major is white time to move on!" The very fact she is white and still is white is arguably offensive. And whether it was experimented for the Major or not, there were also reports of digital FX test to make white characters appear Asian. That doesn't really help the situation either. The studio's admission did lend credence to the rumor.
At this point it means nothing to me, I just don't care. i've heard every side of this story over and over again, I've read the articles, read people's opinions on social media, forums so on and so forth, I'm well past it, I just want to see the movie now.

I get it, this whole thing blowing up is an opportunity to push an agenda, there's nothing wrong about having a discussion about it......... but we've talked about it, what now? eh? we talking about it over and over and over again? What does that accomplish? My problem is alot of people forgotten beyond this agenda there's an actually ****ing movie coming out, it exists and some are not offended by it's existence and you know might be interested in watching it and even talking about it.

If you want to talk about whitewashing so bad I'll gladly bite. I've heard the term "predominately Japanese" repeatedly regurgitated about Major kusanagi, yet beyond her name which probably not her real name, what is so japanese about her? hell it can't even be proved she's even japanese, she's used a prosthetic body most her life and very little is known about her beforehand. She's only predominately japanese because she's an asian creation being played by a white actress and that's supposed to be "offensive" just like changing a white character into a minority or making a male character female is "progressive" despite both being guilty of the same damn thing. Please don't feed me that media horse**** .

Why even bring up death note? why is light yagami being japanese relevent in a non japanese setting? Light is Japanese because the manga is set in japan which is a homogeneous nation, once you change the location, him being japanese becomes irrelevant. Yes asians are american too I know but is it a most? No. Death note can be done in most countries not to mention there's already a Japanese death note adaptation, a Japanese live action tv series and another Japanese movie that came out this year.

What I don't like is the disregard of people who are not triggered about this, like actually japanese who are not offended but of course they shouldn't have a voice and should be ignored because they're not offended, they don't get it, they're represented, they're not asian american etc every excuse to silence and invalidate their opinon, in fact some were even mad they were even asked, like they don't even matter........... ironic!!

There's a holier than thou vendetta to be had here, **** me, **** this movie and **** everyone who doesn't think this is more important.

The difference between this and something like Edge of Tomorrow is that the latter completely Westernized everything. So you could look at it almost like it's own thing that's loosely inspired by the book.

Here, they're setting it in Japan, they're keeping a lot of the Japanese aesthetics/cultural stuff/etc, and they'll cast Japanese/Asian actors, as supporting characters. But the main leads, well they have to be White (by the studio logic).

For a lot of people, this is even more insulting because your using all of the Japan stuff essentially as props to show off your White leads. It's kind of like Aloha but on a bigger scale.

I like how the same people getting bent out of shape about Johanssen playing a historically Japanese-named character are the people who will celebrate MJ not being white. I like even more that they want to use the Japanese setting argument but completely ignore that in the GITS universe Japan is extremely cosmopolitan and not necessarily as homogenous as it is in the real world in 2016.

If actual Japanese people aren't offended then all you white knight/sjw's need to go argue about something else that no one of importance gives a **** about. End of story.

I mean this isn't the same as completely white washing something like Akira which is intrinsically Japanese no ifs, ands, or buts.

Or that the Major could upload her consciousness into body that looks like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar if she wanted to.

Who cares if her cyborg body has blue eyes? :whatever:

It's pretty irrelevant either way, since it's part of the "character" that her outer shell is rather academic. The funny thing is people are flipping out because it's a white actress. If they chose Zoe Saldana, what would the likely reaction have been? Then we would all have been celebrating their courage for "diversifying" the cast. It's odd that white people in Japan isn't seen as "diverse".

And that decision would still have been completely fine since the character's appearance is trivial for the most part. IMO in an ideal world they should've selected a good Japanese/Japanese-American actress, since I personally like when something reminds me of the source material as much as possible, but for studios it's about getting asses in seats. That's why hacks like Vin Diesel or The Rock or "It" people like Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt can churn out mediocre movie after mediocre movie and make zillions of dollars.

For a large part of the viewership this is just the new "Scarlett Johansson movie".

They're cool but it's weird when a company like WETA isn't able to be detailed with human faces as Hot Toys.

Even if the movie turns out to be awful, I'm probably gonna pick up the Blu-Ray if it includes behind-the-scenes features from Weta on how they created all the costumes/makeup, sets and props. I love learning about all the details that go into creating a finished film - the Lord of the Rings BTS special features were some of my favourites.

I know nothing about this movie besides seeing the trailer and it looks like straight fire. That Depeche Mode cover was perfect too. Can't wait to see this in theaters

I heard Weta built their biggest in house set working on this movie, This will be worth the price of admission off the visuals alone.

I wouldn't have minded Zoe Saldana.
But some people probably would have said if they were going to choose a person of color, why not an asian/asian american actress?

I don't think many would be asking that. Despite the great leaps that have been made in recent years, "diversity" still favors blacks and females, or ideally, a combination of the two. Even then, it's not enough because the topic is still a rough one and the industry hasn't done enough to appease either group.

Not sure at what point the "other" ethnicities get to join in on this hot debate, but sadly they've been left out for as long as I can remember.

The point of my post was highlighting the fact that the core reason, whether they say it or not, of people criticizing Scarlett Johansson's casting isn't because she's a different race to the original character, but because she's white. That's why I used Zoe Saldana as an example, she's also a different race to the Major but somehow I'm pretty sure her theoretical casting would've been lauded as visionary and progressive. Which ties in with Jekecy's point too.

Ideally, though, they would've just cast a Japanese/Asian actress. But, movies exist to make money and having a star name in your lead role makes more money, so they cast big names. Lots of people who don't give a **** about anime will see this purely because Johansson is in it.

I really don't like the design of her "skin" outfit. I would prefer it if it wasn't broken up into sections.

Hopefully the busy design of the suit looks better in motion and on screen than in these figures.

Saw the trailer in 3D, and wow it looks absolutely gorgeous. Surprisingly rich and expensive looking movie. I really hope for the best, beyond the visuals.
