Droping Amazing Spider-Man

Well, that still kind of holds. Peter's just indistinguishable between all three now.

Speaking of which, I've always loved these:

My favorite was this:

Do you think this would have happened if Joe Q didn't want it to but the nameless man behind the curtian (aka Marvel Comics Inc.) did?

Depends on how strongly JQ would have been against it...

He's the employee, and maybe he could have been convincing enough to dissuade the higher ups, but at the end of the day, the boss has the final say.

In which JQ could have gone along with it, or simply step down as EiC.

That's an interesting question. I think Marvel, like any company, is leery of change. But I'd imagine that JQ made the case to them that it is in the long term interest to make this particular one, even if it hurts the publishing arm of Spidey in the short term. So, no, I don't think this happens without JQ championing it. And he'll take the credit/blame down the line. BUT, this absolutely doesn't happen without at least the tacit, if not active, approval of his bosses.

Not to argue, but what the hey ! How has Marvels publishing arm been "harmed" ? From what I've read sales are doing fine......

Yeah despite what people (like those that started this thread) may say, I believe BND was in the top 10... maybe even the top 3? Can we get some sales figures in...?

Which is why I said if it harms.....which, personally, I don't think it will.

Hmm. Its sales are dropping a bit on an almost consistent basis, though. I wonder why. Reaction to BND has been mostly positive, from what I've seen.

I think it's because a lot of people went out and bought ASM #546 (that's the first issue of OMD, right?) You know, those "collectors". After that, the "readers". ASM sales will spike up again.

That's what I meant, I don't know why I put in "OMD". Still...

But if you're attributing the initial high sales to speculators, why are you so sure ASM's sales will spike back up soon? Speculators tend to go away after landmark issues and never come back until the next landmark issue.

Sales are dropping but I'd say as where ASM usually sits with sales, where did the other books sit on the sales list? ASM is top 10 twice. Also, I ask myself how many people would actually by the books three times a month. Often times what happens is that a new product will cannibalize another product's sales (same company). And now you have the weight of Spider-man sitting on ASM rather than spread across two other books. Also, in both of those months you had two number 1s drop (prime targets for speculators). So it is probably a difficult month for any book.

ASM isn't amazing right now. I really liked the first arc, but it has gotten slowly weaker and weaker. I think it can get better.

My guess is that ASM will pick up a lot in the trade department, with the reason being that ASM fans (excluding the other two series) are largely stretched, and that many of them just can't support a book like that week to week. I know some people who can only buy a book or two a month. I think it will jump in trade department though, a lot.

I bet once John Romita Jr. starts drawing the book again, the sales will spike again.

Please no JR Jr. Thank you. I know he's legendary and you're not supposed to say anything about him but please not in ASM. I'm trying to read it consistently. :woot:

i think JRJR style works the best with Spider-Man, and aside from his X-Men i really like his style. if marvel wants to attract new, younger readers, they might be attracted to his thin and limber Spidey design, thinking he's "young and relatable".

JR Jr was half the reason why JMS run was so good (well most of it). Next to Mark Bagley he's my favorite spider-man artist. I cant wait for him to come in and save the day even its only for three issues.

I think JMS and Quesada should team up for a Brand New Day run... and feature Spidey and Jackpot (assuming she's MJ) vs Mephisto...

I don't think JMS wants to work with Quesada again.

Nah i'm pretty sure he has a point, JMS was pretty upset with Quesada when they teamed up on OMD, so yea i dont think he'd wanna do it again.

Nah i'm pretty sure he has a point, JMS was pretty upset with Quesada when they teamed up on OMD, so yea i dont think he'd wanna do it again.

1) He has said numerous times he respects Quesada and the position he was in (as JMS has had to do similar things for his own work).

2) Quesada is still JMS' boss. JMS is still writing Thor and the Twelve, so any hard feelings he may have towards Quesada are obviously not so serious that he would leave Marvel.

3) The only thing JMS was "upset" over was having to put his name on an ending that he didn't want to do. As far as OMD itself goes, JMS actually volunteered to write the story and cap off his run with it. The only point of contention between JMS and JQ was the ending.
