Duncan Jones' Warcraft

Nice! The question now is, will Star Wars be released that December?

If Disney books Episode VII for December 2015, Warcraft will move off that date. Probably to spring or summer 2016, I would imagine.

Thanks, mclay. I'd do anything for SW7 to come out in 2015.

Even if this movie goes back to development hell. :hehe:

Might as well call this LoTR 4. They are trying to recapture that Holiday fantasy film magic. Episode 7 may take that date, but I can also see them going to 2016. Could go either way.

I thought Warcraft had a more science-fantasy feel.

Yeah definitely a lot of sci-fi stuff. I would definitely go with fantastical dwarves and flying machines and the works. More sorcery stuff, as opposed to just a couple of wizards. In needs to outdo LotR on every level in terms of the fantastical, over the top stuff. Storywise it will be very difficult to top Tolkien's trilogy.

Wow inherently outdoes LOTR when it comes to the fantastical stuff, so I'm not even worried about that. Sure it'll have some similarities, but I think it'll be more "fun" than the LOTR movies, and by extension, the Hobbit movies.

Not necessarily. Tolkien's trilogy has some good messages, but the execution was lacking. That's where Warcraft can potentially top it. All I really know about the franchise is steampunk, dwarves with guns, and orcs that came from another dimension.

Basically this would be a rough draft template for doing a He-Man movie. It would be smaller scale, but the mix of sci-fi and sword and sorcery is there.

Warcraft is one of those franchises that has a lot more depth and variability than people give it credit for. Which is also the problem. People stereotype, catalogue and box it into one thing and don't see all the other meanings and depth to it. Some people see it as a rip off of LOTR and pop culture, others see it as telling the story of good versus evil, then there's nature versus nurture, the choices of individuals and their effects on the world(s) and so on. You can dig a lot of meaning from this franchise.

Sure it's a video game with a story that is often trope-filled and predictable but it also has hidden depths to it that aren't often explored or realized beneath the shallow looking surface.

I doubt the movie can ever explore that but it can at least be entertaining. The franchise isn't successful with such a large and varied audience for no reason afterall.

It freaked me out that the Orcs are not from the world; they're from a different dimension. So in theory, they're almost like aliens to Warcraft's medivialish world.

I've never played any of the games I've only seen pictures online. How similar could this be to LOTR? I know there's elves, orcs, dwarves etc. in the games, but from the art I've seen they look totally different from the ones in LOTR.

It shouldn't be very much like LOTR at all if they do it right.

I would say that the tone is similar to Game of Thrones, only with more fantasy elements and with each faction mostly represented by a different race. For example, instead of the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens, you have the humans, orcs, and night elves. It is the same type of thing with several different factions all fighting against each other unless they are temporarily allied out of necessity, none particularly good (just some more evil than others), with tons of characters, and practically anybody can die at any point.

There is the humor and popculture references, but that is basically all in fun sidequests in the MMORPG. The first three games and even the main storylines in World of Warcraft are far more serious. I wouldn't count on seeing Harrison Jones and company in the film.

That depends how far they go with making this more or less like the MMO aspect.

There are also the gnomes and goblins with their steampunk/magic melding technology and other things that set it out as being different enough to stand on its own from LOTR.

Besides the races being superficially similar (specifically humans, elves, dwarves and orcs) and some loose connective threads if you look past just the fantasy aspect it has developed into its own thing.

The technology and magic level in Warcraft is definitely far more advanced than Tolkien. Things like airships and guns are common in Warcraft.

Even the dwarves and elves are more complicated with different types. Only the Bronzebeard dwarves and High Elves are similar to their Tolkien counterparts.

Which I hope is seen in the movie. That despite being one race (any race in Warcraft), they are not a homogenous one.

Lead Role has been offered to Travis Fimmel, the lead of the show The Vikings

Anybody know this guy? How is he? Leading man material?

He is Australian and badass in Vikings.

He is a very charismatic actor in the show despite not having a huge amount of dialogue. Fimmel is one of those actors that can convey alot of thoughts or emotions without saying much.

My interest in this film just went up with first Duncan Jones and now Travis Fimmel.
