Fantasy Dungeons & dragons movie discussion

He doesn't have anything on Irons!

I think it's only fair that Irons be the villain of Paddington 3.

I'm assuming with the cast so far they won't be skimping on the budget, so we can at a minimum expect GoT level stuff hopefully.

Still no plot synopsis, huh?

I’m so worried they’re going to Jumanji this thing just because that concept worked in another movie.

I'm pretty sure of that too. Two young players (Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis) transported into the Dungeons & Dragons world. It'll definitely be comedic in some way. From the writers/directors of Vacation and Game Night.

Well that is what the cartoon did, a d they'll be able to claim they're technically adapting that

I know absolutely nothing about the brand but I am assuming there are Orcs, Ents (tree-like people), Elves etc etc...

True, but barely anyone remembers the cartoon and it wasn’t even popular at the time. It was canceled before they even had a chance to do a final episode. It just seems like a such a waste. There’s so much potential to tell a great fantasy story and so much lore to pull from. It would be really disappointing if they just were like, “Hey, remember that Saturday morning cartoon you didn’t watch 40 years ago? Let’s make a movie about that!”

I think only a fool would get the D&D license and not start by adapting RA Salvatore's material. It's like buying a house and entering through the dryer vent.

Well a potential problem with Dungeons & Dragons is that it has a reputation for being geeky, even more so than comic books or video games or even Star Trek did. That the last movie they made was considered bad probably doesn't help matters any. So they might be trying to improve its image among the general audience by making a fun/funny movie about "cool" people playing D&D.

Seriously. The Drizzt books are overall really good and having the Drow in live action would really set this series apart from other fantasy films. It’s such a cool concept and while I understand the fears about it potentially not being accessible to mainstream audiences, I think sometimes movie studios just have to bite the bullet and give it a shot. It frustrates me that seemingly every damn YA fantasy romance novel gets a TV or movie adaptation these days but stuff like the Drizzt books and Dragonlance don’t even seem to be in the conversation.

Do Hasbro have the Drizzt books film rights for definite or are they separate creator owned rights that would need to be reached with Salvatore?

The Dark Alliance game is going to have Drizzt and his party members.

Yeah, I’m really looking forward to that. I was a big fan of the Baldur’s Gate: DA games and this should be even better since you can play as Drizzt (and not just as an Easter egg after you beat the game).

You know that's a good question, but I would assume it's with Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast.

But yeah, I'm surprised they don't try to adapt something like the books set in the D&D scenarios like Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, et al and are going for a more "players playing around in the world of D&D thing."

“Drallas.” I swear, the way fantasy writers come up with names for characters is by just adding or removing a letter from the names of cites, people, etc.

Isn't that what George Lucas did?
