I just saw this today. I’m surprised at how much I liked it. Looking forward to checking it out again at some point.

Looking forward to this. Though, still disappointed in the main party looking homogeneously human. Out of the six members, there are four humans. Okay, four and a half since Smith is a half-elf. :hehe: They could have been more imaginative with Lillis's tiefling. Where are her demonic black eyes? Or her inhuman skin color?

Hopefully we get to see other *ahem* exotic races from the lore like the half-orcs and the friggin' dragonborn. Heck, I'll be happy if there's one gith.

I saw this today and I really liked it.
It follows the blueprint from Guardians of the Galaxy, even the roles are kind of the same but the story is in a Fantasy Middleage setting. Very unexpected surprise! I even liked Michelle Rodriguez, its the first time I liked her in a movie.

I hope for a sequel.

Good point, hopefully they are more adventurous in a sequel on that front.

this actually looks fun.

its been 20+ year long wait to wash away the bad taste of the 2000s dnd movie:

LOL. i remember watching this in theaters and wondering w...t...f...i was watching.

Today is the big day for me! :D

Will a person who has zero knowledge of D&D lore still enjoy this movie? Asking for a friend...

Having never seen the Vacation reboot, I wonder what was it that made it so bad, because Game Night and this new Dungeons and Dragons are so damn good and so well directed!

It was amazing!!

The cast were awesome and had great chemistry. Top quality sword and sorcery action (some unique magic stuff) which we don’t get a whole lot of, really good comedy and heart too. I’m super happy as a D&D and fantasy fan.

Thanks @DarthSkywalker as I might not have prioritised this quite as high without your rave.

Plain and simple, it wasn’t funny.

Not sure why, but maybe they learned better to use their voices for future films.

Glad you enjoyed it man.

They really Marvelized this with all the quips and humor. There was almost a quip after every beat. Chris Pine was basically playing Starlord. The speech about failure before the third act was basically the “we’re all losers” speech from Guardians 1. They even snuck in the Hulk smashing Loki bit from Avengers.

That being said, I enjoyed it. The world building and FX were good. They could have trimmed about 20 minutes but it’s a good time.

This was a great deal of fun and probably far better than it had any right to be but the humor mostly worked, with some genuine laugh out loud moments and great call backs (even if some were lifted from Phase 2 era MCU) but this had the vibe of an early Guardians or Ant-Man and it worked wonders here with a fun cast that all bounced off each other well, Chris Pine probably held the whole thing together to be fair but he managed it, its a shame the Palladin character didnt stick around longer as he was another highlight and his deadpan to Chris's funny guy were some of the best character interactions.

There's a few quibbles, the first 15-20 minutes are a little rough to get through with a lot of exposition and explaining to do to get the audience up to speed but once the gang are all together it moves a long nicely with some nice action as well. Some of the effects and character creations are a little rough in places and look a little cheap but I guess thats to be expected in the first outing. The bad guys as well dont get much development either and are pretty much one dimensional "evil" guys who are pretty obvious as to who they are but they serve the purpose to give the group someone to fight and group up against.

Overall a really fun surprise, rough around the edges maybe but that was almost part of the charm of it all and there's going to be something in here for everyone, whether a D&D fan or not, its hardly essential to follow the plot or any need to know the rules. There's plenty of nods and winks to the fans but they aren't the main focus of the thing.

I would certainly be back for second outing if they did do one.

Now having said all that it would be interesting if they did a more serious take on the D&D world in future projects but that might be a harder sell to some and take more money and planning so I doubt thats in the pipepline's soon but I think for now the tone they are going with is working for what they are trying to achieve but I could see some ultra hardcore D&D fans being a little peeved at how unserious a lot of it is taken but this is the beauty of the D&D world itself it can mean different things to different people. Some see a fun and lighthearted fantasy world (like the cartoon) while others might prefer the dark and grittier tone (ala Game of Thrones/Witcher) but its hard to cater for all tastes I guess. We shall see what the box office is like first I guess before worrying about the future though.

I’d take the serious version, but this is working really well at a time where it’s easy for a D&D film to fail so I’m very happy regardless.

As for the Paladin character I knew he was going to be awesome after I saw it was Regé-Jean Page. Hope he’s back for future films.

Two very nice touches they added.

The mimic (chest that comes alive)

The classic geek cosplay D&D party they showed a flash of.

I saw this last wednesday on the pre-release here where I live, and as a long time fan (not connosseur mind you) of D&D it was a blast!
Soooooooooooooooooooo many winks and nods... it was just fun! One of the main aspects that I loved was that it embodied what a game of D&D really feels like with all the chaos, and especially with how the best laied plans fail and the "you can certainly try..." ones end up succedding.
And mixed in with all the fun there are some really sweet and thoughtful moments. I can't stress this enough, EVERYONE should see this movie, either you like D&D or you never heard of it, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it.

Some standout moments (without spoilers) where without a doubt the bridge trap scene, the "glitch scene" and the amazing wildshape scene.
Also btw SO many nods to other movies! Jurassic Park and Avengers without a doubt xD (that last one... oh man it cracked me up)

Rége-Jean Page's Xenk was my favorite by a mile! Just insanely over the top perfection xD

See its these types of nods that were awesome! That classic geek cosplay party, was actually the D&D Party of the Animated series from way back when... xD
