DVD/Box Set Discussion

I think we all should wait & look & see how well the SG-1 movies coming to DVD next year do. Who knows maybe if they do good enough this can start something for other shows like Smallville continuing on DVD

Wouldn't the Joss Whedon Firefly tv show/movie franchise also be a measuring stick?

Nah because Serenity was a theater release. The SG-1 movies are DVD only & will obviously eventually air on tv after release

The first network TV series to see release on HD DVD or Blu-ray, Smallville just gave us a few more reasons to eagerly anticipate the release of the season 5 boxed set. There will be an HDi interactive feature for the season premiere episode "Arrival" -- we suppose Warner can't call it IME seeing as its not a movie, but we're sure they'll come up with something -- and all episodes will be encoded in 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks. All this HD goodness comes at a price, $79.98 to be exact; a $20 bump over the standard DVD edition when it hits February 6, 2007. Despite the premium price, after watching a series in HD, going back to DVD quality later isn't our preferred option.

I'm sooooo buying that set when it comes out. It will be the ONLY DVD I've bought more than once, so to speak.

I'm not even sure what all that means, but I'm buying it anyway. :D

Well, at least make sure you have a 1080p HDTV and an HD-DVD player. Otherwise, it'll make a nice paperweight for you! ;)

Yeah when I originally mentioned it to my hubbie and son, I was stupid enough to think that even if I didnt have an HD DVD player, that it would just play normally.

But I'm still gonna buy it. :woot:

'Smallville' Coming to HD-DVD on November 28
October 20, 2006

Warner Home Video has announced 'Smallville: Complete Fifth Season' will be released on HD-DVD November 28 in a five-disc set, replacing 'The Sopranos: Season 6, Part 1' as the first TV series released on either high definition home video format.

The slight delay from a previous Fall anticipated release may be due in part to the inclusion of an In-Program Experience feature on the first episode with the show's effects artists. This will operate the exact same as Warner's previous In-Movie Experience features have with video commentary playing on top of the episode. The IME name is pretty much useless since Smallville isn't a movie, so In-Program Experience it is. Other extra features mirror the standard DVD release and include Smallville's 100th Episode: Making a Milestone, Commentary on 2 episodes, Unaired scenes, and Vengeance Chronicles Promo Webisodes.

'Smallville: Complete Fifth Season' will be presented in 1.85:1 widescreen video and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio. It will carry an SRP of $79.98, a cool $20 steeper than the DVD. The extra resolution is worth the extra coin, don't you think?

Oh. Okay.
Well, I've been wanting to upgrade the set for a long time now.

I won't tell Mr. Serene that we have to buy several thousand dollar TV setup to go with my new SV dvd's. It makes complete sense to me, but he might not understand. :D

You actually have to convince your husband to buy an HDTY?! :wow:

I wish I had that dillema!

It's more about spending a zillion dollars when we do already have a pretty nice and big TV - 5 of them really.. but who's counting. ;) But NONE are HD!

Your avy reminded me though.. with the BEARS heading into the playoffs, I could use that as my primary reason.. the SV dvds will just be background mumbling. :D

'Smallville' DVD gets HD bow
First TV series to go high-def
By DIANE GARRETT

Fugetaboutit, "Sopranos" -- "Smallville" is going to be the first small-screen series to get a splashy high-def debut.

Warner Home Video will bow the fifth season of "Smallville" on HD DVD Nov. 28 as part of the studio's massive "Superman" disc onslaught. The five-disc high-def set will contain unaired scenes, commentaries and HD-exclusive features such as the "Behind the Story" docu. It's priced at $79.98 -- $20 more than the standard DVD set.

Warner is also releasing HD versions of "Superman Returns," "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut" for a few dollars more than the standard DVD versions. Donner cut has been highly anticipated by the comicbook crowd ever since the helmer was forced off the film almost 30 years ago; Richard Lester completed the 1980 bigscreen version.

Warner also is releasing a 14-disc "Ultimate Collector's Edition" on standard DVD for $100 on Nov. 28.

Originally, the sixth season of "The Sopranos" was slated for a Nov. 7 bow on HD DVD, but that release was put on ice last month, leaving the honor open to the small-screen Man of Steel.

I wonder what's going to be included on that?

I have a few questions for anyone who might know...
So, to actually play and see the HD DVDs in HD.. do you need to have an HD DVD player and an HD television set?

What about a computer monitor? Are there monitors that are HD quality?

I'm kind of stupid about this stuff. :O

I am too. Lucky I have a son who is majoring in digital media.

You do need an HD DVD player and an HD TV.

If you have an Xbox 360 you can buy some sort of contraption that upgrades it to play HD dvds.

What's this?! Smallville making SHH's front page?! :wow:

Simply put, HD-DVDs can only be played on HD-DVD players. And hooking up an HD-DVD player to a standard definition TV is pointless. One needs an HDTV to appreciate the HD. And even then, the highest quality TV (a 1080p model) would almost have to be required. (You could buy a lower resolution TV, but then that would defeat the purpose of buying an HD-DVD player).

To make things more complicated, there is a competing HD format called Blu-Ray. These discs will only play on Blu-Ray disc players. And not every studio is releasing their movies on both formats (ie: Sony, which is developing Blu-Ray technology, will only make their movies -- like Spider-Man -- only available on Blu-Ray). So in order to watch all movies in HD, one would have to invest in both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Me, I'm waiting until either one format emerges, or both formats merge.

If you've got an Xbox 360 there is an upgrade that you can buy to play HD DVDs, just in the interim until we see whether its HD or Blu-Ray.

Holy crap.
Maybe I should just wait then. I don't know which one to buy. :(

Thanks for the explanation though, Raku.

Which shows have commentary and who does them? I assume Millar and Gough do the 100th?

I just read that on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), BestBuy will be selling the Season 4 set for $10.

What a great stocking stuffer. :)

I hope that's true. I have it but you can't pass up getting it for $10.

I saw that S5 was still in the top 10 on Amazon. I wonder how much they are making on dvd sales. It has to be up there.

Cool! I've been collecting an extra set as they come on sale. So my son can have a set and I can have a set. :yay:

By the way how do you fit a DVD box set into a stocking?

Is it really? That is interesting. I'm sure Pat knows where to go to check out that sort of info.
