Ant-Man Edgar Wright Leaves Ant-Man!! - Part 1

You've had one director who's been working on it for eight years leave mere weeks before filming was to start, and now one of the potential replacements dropped out only 24 hours after negotiations began. It's not unreasonable for people to wonder what's going on behind the scenes.

Wrights & Wrongs: Caught in the Middle of Marvel's Ant-Man Backlash

Really insightful and worth a read from cb fans to film fans who might benefit from a history lesson on how the system itself has changed over the years.

I think this is a great article. That being said, all the talk about the death of the "Auteur Theory" will probably last until James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy comes out. In reality, I think it's going to be a rebalancing where the director is no longer King, but I don't think the director is going to be a minor cog in the process either.

I think Marvel should just cancel the whole project.

Both Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Days of Future Past have underperformed. Now is not the time to make an expensive superhero movie, with a last minute replacement director, about a character no-one has heard of.

I don't say this to annoy anyone as I am a fan of Ant-Man myself - but the point of this movie is that it's an Edgar Wright superhero movie, something unique and unexpected. Now it no longer has that USP, it will struggle.

Sorry to break it to ya but Edgar Wright isnt the most famous director around. In fact other than his fans, hes not known much at all. Lets get realistic. All anyone who goes to see this movie will care about ultimately is if its really fun like the other MCU films have been. Noone out there gives a crap if THE Edgar Wright directed it or not.

Others may quibble about whether DOFP underperformed. However, I'll just point out that we're talking about next year. If this year's market is rejecting superhero movies, it's Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron that have to worry, not Ant-Man.

Entertainment journalism is so unprofessional and gossipy that it's hard for me to even comment on the Adam McKay story.

IFMcKay was ever really in early talks and dropped out I expect Marvel won't get a name director and will just get some random to direct it. Maybe the We're the Millers guy? I don't know why they just don't delay it but I guess they think that is admitting defeat or something.

Maybe Marvel will hire Josh Trank to film Ant-Man. Pull him away from FFINO and work on this, especially since he can clearly film a movie for cheap in just 10 weeks and make it look good. :o

It would be smarter to work on fixing the screenplay and delay filming for now. Noones gonna cry if Ant Man isnt released exactly on schedule.

Agreed.

Maybe, despite everything, Feige really believes in what they have. I know that sort of optimism might sound naive to some at this point, but it's possible.

He believes in a secret last minute re-written script that much? I don't know if I'm buying that.

haha, well when you put it that way....

But maybe his faith is in the concept/storyline. I don't know, I can't read his mind. I was just throwing it out there, and I don't think it's entirely implausible.

Of course, it could be what others have suggested: they've already spent X amount of money, and they want to salvage what they can so it isn't a complete loss. If that line of thinking is true, though, I would predict that they cancel the whole thing if there is no new director locked down soon (as in the next couple days), to keep from bleeding more money.

From Adams twitter: "And yes, met w/Marvel. Kirby & Lee r my Lennon Mccartney so it was awesome. But have other projects I'm committed to. Not sure it can work."

Thats not Adam McKay to Direct Ant Man Officially. Thats went to a meeting only, not sure yet.

The internet gossip rumor machine is a bit too much sometimes. Talk about jumping the gun

Yeah I'm more inclined to believe the money explanation. I agree that if they don't find a director soon they are going to have to delay it.

Looked over Adam McKay's Wikipedia page and noticed the guys has done a lot of comedy films.

That tells me Wright leaving had less to do with his style and more with specific plot points.

Reality check: Noone who buys a ticket to Ant Man will care if Wright left because of plot points that werent exactly as he wanted, all they care about is if the film is entertaining and if its another great MCU installment.

My take on this: Wright turned Ant Man into something it was never supposed to be and when Marvel altered it to fit in with their universe, he split because it wasnt an Edgar Wright film anymore. Theres no other explanation why the guy would leave. As I said before, Marvel has the final say of what they want. Its not Wrights place to dictate anything.

POSTER WILL READ: Marvel's Ant Man, not Edgar Wright's Ant Man or (Insert Directors) Ant Man

By someone random do you mean someone like this?

Is that pic a meme yet?

"Kevin. Kevin! Join me on the dark side of the Force. It is the only way."

Ratner sounds like a portmanteau of ratty-toupéed Shatner.

Or specific dialog, scenes, etc. We don't know how extensively the movie was rewritten last script.

What we know is this. Brett Ratner came on board X-Men 3 and saved that production. He got the movie delivered on time and on budget. It made over $234 million domestic. Similar timeframe.

Let him do Ant-Man :D
