Episode 08 - "Seven Minutes To Midnight" - Discussion Thread

Did you even bother to read my post? Claire recording herself is the opposite of what she's been doing since her first scene, which is why that was such a stupid way to start her arc, because it's a complete 180 from what she's been doing since. Yes, teenagers are moody. In fact, being 21 myself, I know exactly what it's like to feel different, as does everyone else, I'm sure.

If your sole defining trait is "Why can't I be normal?" can you see how keeping evidence of yourself being paranormal would be an idiotic mistake? And she has progressed since then, particularly with the accident scenes, but out of all the Powers, she's progressed the least, and now she seems to be being set up as a victim. Save the Cheerleader. Save the World. It seems to me, because of the inherent nature of her abilities, she's one of the most capable of handling herself, which is why her near-constant characterization as hopeless and helpless distances her from being a real person.

As for Niki's character, if there were more scenes where "Jessica" didn't take over, there'd be more of her character to follow. So far, we've seen her stripping, acting scared, dumping her problems on other people, and running away from said problems. While most of those are natural inclinations given each situation, they still don't add up to much. I don't care for Niki, but I do think "Jessica" has potential, albeit as a villain, or at least, a non-hero.

I never claimed to hate good characters or solid storytelling, and I'm not sure what your personal connection to Heroes is, but it is just a show. Not a way of life. It is generally well-written, and exceedingly entertaining, and I do associate with some of the characters: Hiro, as do most people on these boards, and Peter in particular, but just because I don't throw myself 100% into every character is no reason to accuse me of hating a good show. If you're into the scenes with Claire and Niki, that's your perogative, but I, frankly, don't care for their characters, and that's my perogative.

Did no one watch the end of the episode?

Mohinder opened up his father drawer and found a file on his sister - in included a pic. The "boy" in his dreams was a girl, his sister. Its not that difficult.

I think HRG is truly a good guy. He truly cares for his daughter and he knew all along that she was going to be "special" - I just don't see him having so much love if he was truly "anti-hero".

Don't think it's his sister, beyond being very boylike, the name on the papers was Sanjog Iyer, which is pretty far away from the Suresh name.

Does he know about Hiro's abilities? How many powers does Silar have? Dude can fly, bulletproof, telekinetic abilities, super strength, radiation powers.....anymore?

Add to that a photographic memory from the waitress.

Time out, HRG?

I think Bennett might either be one of them, or he has a sort of "Lex Luthor" mentality...he is trying to save the world, either from the "mutants" so he seeks to understand them so as to beat them, or with thier help (hence hsi little helper(s) (since I'm convinced Eden has powers too) to do good...But I am really thinking he's not evil so much as a ruthless, stop-at-nothing, regardless of the costs, good guy.

Yah he's more of a "Ends justify the means" kind of person to me, I don't think he's evil, but his methods are bound to piss people off.

BTW, a comparison for Eden in the comics would be The Purple Man, who has the power of suggestion, though you can also compare her to Jesse Custer from Preacher, though instead of yelling she can whisper :D

Thought it was funny the mind wiper is called 'The Haitian', it's like they really wanted to be politically correct in those scenes and not have the Cop or Radioactive Man say, 'this black dude'

Theory on Sylar, maybe he was an original test subject by whomever, and he got the ability to steal powers, but then took whatever serum that turns people into 'supers', and to gain enough power to become unstoppable he runs around injecting people with the serum turning them into supers, to then come back when they have matured with their own powers and steal them for his own means.

Don't know how this fits into the lore, but it popped into my mind while watching the show, especially when in the diner he was in the presence of two supers, but only killed the one, having no idea about Hiro. What I said above would explain this.

Got a bit of Ra's al Ghul in him.

Was "Patient 0" ever readressed? I thought there was a theory similar to yours that Sylar could be the original man-made Power.

Of course, Micah, the waitress, who I hope gets a name soon, so I don't have to keep calling her "The Waitress", etc. disprove the theory that Powers are all man-made. Unless there are some more connections to be made, some of the choices seem extremely random as to who has abilities.

Great episode. Back on track. :yay:

When Hiro and The Waitress return I agree that he'll be speaking better English than Ando. I wonder how far back he went? - at least six months to the birthday party.

The Indian stuff started out boring but got very intriguing by the end.

The scene with Matt and the radioactive guy, who looks like one of the Neanderthals from those stupid Geiko commercials, was great with the tat reveal.

Don't buy the HRG as a good dad. He's using his Clairbear as bait to catch/trap/kill a ravenous superpowered serial killer and doesn't seem to have any qualms about doing it. This is not in The Good Dad's Handbook.

And thank GOD this was a Niki-free episode. I know it's not a very popular opinion, but her storyline bores the crap outta me. She's shaping up to be a villain, despite acting scared and innocent about "Jessica".

It's nice to see I'm not alone on this one, I too think the Niki/Jessica character is incredible dull.

The girl's pretty, but the character's boring...having a split-personality isn't a super-power. When will Niki grow a backbone and start using her powers herself instead of letting her "other self" take over and do all the work?

As for the child from the dreams...I couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl (looked like a boy to me). I don't think it was supposed to be Mohinder's sister...the last names don't match, the kid looks like a boy, and his sister was supposed to have been 5 yrs old when she died....that kid was much older than 5.

I loved the Hiro plot of the episode...his serious nature's coming out, and I can see the beginnings of the Future Hiro we saw a few eps ago.

Rest of the ep was good, can't wait for the showdown next week!

The waitress does have a name... the Sheriff called her "Charlie".

The radiation guys doesn't have anything to do with the bomb.....he is the BOMB! I think that Sylar helped break him out of the prison car. My theory is that Mr.Bennet is gonna be the bad guy in next season. I think that he just wants Claire safe for now. And let me ask you something, why is saving her so darned important... all she is able to do is regenerate? I don't know, I think this next episode may be the last of the season though.

the indian woman is my new g/f..dayum shes hot

I think her power is actual more beast than split personality, its like a some sort of dark side (we all have it inside of us) inside of herself that will do anything by any means. Plus i think she has super strength because of that!

She isn't that dull, I think if she figures out how to stop the darker side of her it will be much better for her character development.

This episode was really well done.

Can't wait to see - Save the cheerleader save the world next week & how they all come together, the preview of Peter was amazing!:oldrazz:

I don't think HRG and the Haitian create the powers, they just enhance them. Sylar in the diner was cool, how he just made his coffe cup slide to him; it's so cool to see practical effects when everything is CGI these days. I was like, lookout Hiro! Going after the waitress was a suprise. When he peeled the top off theat waitress's head, that was so nasty. That's one of the cool things about this show, how every now and then they just push the line of what you can show on television. Hiro going back and saving her is brilliant. Will that take him out of the whole save the cheerleader arc?

I don't think so Armand!

He was shown in the picture with the Waitress on her birthday and I think that will give him and her time to be a couple! And then reveal his power to her and convince her that she is special too. This giving him some time to learn English and then he will probably walk in with her and meet up with his friend

Or Both he and the waitress are heading towards the cheerleader... Only time will tell, NEXT WEEK MAN!

except that Mr Bennet is actually good, smart, well intentioned, etc?

It was finally nice to see that he is actually good not evil and he wants to help these "Heros" not kill them off.

Out of all the characters in the show, she and Claire are the worst by far.

Claire videotapes trying to kill herself, and then tries to pretend that she's normal. If you're trying to be a "normal" teenager, recording evidence that you're anything but normal, and then skulking about it, are two strides in the opposite direction. It almost renders everything Bennet is doing null and void, besides the fact that he's having her killed, because you know she'd just mope around and be ungrateful anyways.

I really don't see why everyone is so hot for Ali Larter. Seriously. The scrappy blonde look just doesn't do it for me. Add to that, she's obviously not conflicted about screwing other people over, whether she's in control or "Jessica" is, and is as self-absorbed and self-destructive as Claire. It makes her nigh impossible to root for, and I strongly believe that unless there's some unforseen turnaround at the fifteenth episode (or so), she's going to be a villain. DL on the other hand, who she is quick to demonize, has been nothing but a sympathetic character.

What with more Powers showing up, Micah being a technopath, the waitress being a cipher/walking Rosetta Stone, and Eden, who, regardless of being good or evil, is gorgeous, being an empath (of sorts), Claire and Niki are becoming less and less likeable, as we're meeting more and more people who are.
looks like someone just doesn't like blonds

Yup - also, I don't know where all this "Bennet is planning to kill Claire/use her for bait" stuff is coming from. Honestly, against an enemy who is, for the moment, untraceable, unpredictable, and unstoppable, what really can you do about it? He couldn't very well lock Claire in solitary.

Also - I'm thinking he has a whole BUNCH of Heroes on his side who aren't only working for him, but are INDEBTED to him. Think of the "fake birthparents" - who were all like, "We'll do anything for you, Mr Bennet, we mean it."

So, once again, Mr Bennet rocks!

I think he's doing what any parent would do given the circumstances. He's trying to save his daughter by any means necessary. Sure his methods might be little off but he doest have time to sit around an wait for thing to develop. He said to Issac that his daughter was going to die tomorrow if he didnt do something to stop it.
