Guess that confirms which storyline the underwater ship belongs to.

So in that Supergirl is investigating the ship does that mean she has learned how to breathe underwater?

She survived on Mars for most of an episode. :word:

Well I mean, if you wanna get technical, Mars HAS atmosphere that contains oxygen/carbon dioxide, etc. It's just not enough/toxic for humans. Could be fine for yellow sun-powered Kryptonians, though.

According to ye ole Wikipedia, the oxygen content of the Martian atmosphere is a feeble 0.146%. Whereas, I’m pretty sure that the percentage of dissolved oxygen in water (the stuff that the fishies breathe) is significantly higher. So just in terms of the “internal logic,” if SG can manage the very low oxygen on Mars, she should fare even better in water. ;)

Here’s the thing (and correct me if I’m wrong - your knowledge of the episodes is better than mine): On at least of couple occasions, someone (Alex, J’onn?) has provided exposition to the effect that SG needs to breathe, that she can’t (e.g.) survive in the vacuum of space. But as far as I know, we’ve never actually seen her succumb to this limitation (at least, not yet). With apparent ease, she’s performed thrilling rescues in space, she’s “flown” underwater and, just recently, visited Mars.

Bottom-line: Storytellers might legitimately decide that a character like SG is too powerful. Thus, they “de-power” her in order to better serve the drama, peril and suspense - so that obstacles aren’t too easy to overcome. But if they then ignore those self-imposed limits (or contrive loopholes for why they don’t apply in a given scenario) then it’s clear those limits were ill-conceived.

IMO. :word:

She did seem to do quite well underwater for a long time - the only reason she was "in peril" was because she was knocked unconscious for a hot minute. But she showed no signs of drowning. So who knows. Maybe Alex is just extra-paranoid because she's her big sister and it's her job, and they'd rather not test Kara's limits to such extremes.

Also, I think Alex's main concern in S1 about space was that Kara wouldn't be able to achieve thrust once she left the atmosphere, so she wouldn't be able to fly back down to Earth on her own. And being stuck out there in the vacuum indefinitely, she probably would die.

FYI…

Way back in 1920, when scientist types were starting to talk about space travel, the NY Times wrote an (in)famous editorial rejecting the idea. A big problem (they said): it was a matter of “common sense” that rockets can’t work in space because there’s nothing to push against. This is, of course, utter nonsense. Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion explains how rockets move in space. (Though, even today, you get wacky YouTubers peddling the rockets-can’t-work-in-space myth.)

Now obviously, Supergirl doesn’t have rockets attached to her body. But in air, SG doesn’t flap her arms or “swim.” She has (as per the Fake Science™/Kryptonian/yellow Sun mythology) some form of “thrust” that allows her to fly, hover and change directions. And if this works in air, there’s no reason for it to not work in space. Newton’s 3rd Law applies to both.

(And, yes: I'm a nerd. ;nd)

I assumed Kara can hold her breath underwater for much longer than a human but still needs air. She doesn’t have gills like a fish so she can’t get the oxygen out of water. Sea mammals like wales and dolphins can hold thier breath for about 15 minuets. If a sea mammal is knocked unconscious they will drown. That’s why dolphins die in tuna nets, they can’t get to the surface to take a breath.

They might not have fully tested Kara’s ability to hold her breath underwater and as she said Alex is kinda always going to worry.

Yeah, I would assume she could pretty much do what a dolphin could do, that was my thinking.

Then why do rocket ships have to create their own thrust in space? They throw fuel and produce a force. What is Supergirl going to throw? ;)

I'm going to go with the idea that Supergirl can manipulate gravity. She creates some sort of anti-gravity force field that repels gravity. Out in space the gravity field of Earth is weaker so there is less to repel against. It's sort of like how
the closer the same pole of two magnets get together, the more force there is pushing them apart. So father away there is less repelling force. Chyler sort of misspoke when she said there is no gravity in space. She meant that there is
less (of Earth's) gravity in space. So Chyler meant with less gravity there is less to push against.

According to the superhero science I’ve read :o, SG’s power of flight (and strength, for that matter) is “explained” as a kind of psycho-kinesis. She wills her body to fly - and it does. And under this fanciful conceit, psycho-kinetic levitation and propulsion (“thrust”) should work just as well in space as in air.

The notion that SG’s ability to defy gravity requires proximity to a gravity source (e.g., Earth) strikes me as contradictory. But even if that were the case, the “zero g” that occurs in orbit is not actually due to an absence of gravity; it’s due to free-fall. In low Earth orbit, the strength of gravity is only marginally weaker (because of distance). So at worst, SG would experience only a marginal loss in flight ability. :word:

I'm going to go with the idea that Supergirl can fly near earth, but not in space. Why? Because that is how the writers have written her for the TV series. :)

Extended promo:

I just kinda want to skip to the crossover, tbh.

I can't wait to see her reaction to him being married to Saturn Girl.

I gave up the fight and am going to start watching trailers from now on.

So, she (Kara) believes he (Mon El) is an impostor? A shape-shifter?

I find it very interesting that there were actually two Mon Els at the same time on Earth.

Also, I saw this pic on Supergirl TV of Winn looking at Saturn Girl and now I am wondering if we could have a love pentacle? Winn falls for Saturn Girl, who is in love with Mon El, who can't decide between her and Kara, who is probably considering Brianiac as well, who is in love with Kara. Tragically, James and Lena will not be included but will have to make do with each other.:oldrazz:

Alex and J'onn will watch the fun from the sidelines.:cwink:

If the showrunners want to keep Kara and Mon El end game as many claim, that is an option (I mean, Winn falling for Saturn Girl).

What is the difference between Legion, Legends and Justice League? Just in members?

So did Winn dump Lyra or is Winn just being fickle? So far all the alien looking aliens have been noticeably absent this season. (other than martians) I haven't even seen any at the alien dive bar

Two Mon-Els all this time, eh?

I wonder what the time traveling mission for Mon-El and the Legion of Superheroes was.

I don't blame Kara thinking that Mon-El may be a shapeshifter because she doesn't know that he went into a portal in last season finale.

Kind of an odd time to bring Mon-El back when the week after Kara goes to Earth-1 for Iris's wedding and then has to deal with the Earth-X villains.
