Christopher Paolini's best-selling debut novel becomes the next blockbuster film for Fox 2000 Pictures, a division of Twentieth Century Fox. Accompanying the preview of the film was Elizabeth Gabler, the President of Fox 2000 Pictures and actor Edward Speleers who plays the title character. Moderating the Twentieth movie panel was Michael Broyte, a publicist for the company, who has been coming to Comic Con for the past 12 years. Fox 2000 Pictures acquired the rights to Eragon soon after it was self-published by Paolini's parents. Determined to bring the novel to life on the big screen, they began pre-production work that took them to five locations around the world. The real draw of the new film is, of course, the dragon Saphira, wonderfully rendered using the latest CGI technology from special effects houses, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and Peter Jackson's own special F/X house, Weta.
Considering the name recognition of the special effects houses being employed, the trailer shows every bit of the mastery and technical advancement of a true Hollywood blockbuster film. As the trailer begins, we are thrust into a world of magic and myth. Majestic mountains and boundless skies frame the introduction bringing an almost biblical scope that is reminiscent of the vistas seen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. That's where Tolkien's world ends and Paolini's adventure begins. The first chapter of the Inheritance trilogy features Saphira laying waste to ground forces with her sulfurous breath. In addition, we saw glimpses of John Malkovich as King Galbatorix he plies his nefarious plans against Eragon and the forces of good. "You are the next dragon rider," said Jeremy Irons who plays Brom, Eragon’s mentor as our hero takes that giant leap into legend. That’s what the film is to become from what the trailer has shown. Eragon premieres on December 15, 2006; not a moment too soon for readers of the novel and for fantasy fans alike.
Ms. Gabler thanked the packed hall at Comic Con for their thunderous applause right after the trailer. She then talked about the long hard search for the perfect actor to play the lead role of Eragon. The task took them all over the English-speaking world. Ms. Gabler remarked that they wanted to do justice to Chris Paolini's novel. The only way that could be accomplished was with the brilliant casting of a twenty-something English heartthrob by the name of Edward Speleers. At that point, the audience went wild when Mr. Speleers walked onto the stage and sat down with Michael and Elizabeth. It was Ed's first time visiting Comic-Con as well as the first time he has visited Southern California.
When asked about playing the role of Eragon, Ed commented on the how amazing he thought the book was and admired the heart of Chris's novel as well as became intrigued by the title character. He also related to the character on a personal level. He remarked on how Eragon's life paralleled his own experiences. He said he brought that experience to the forefront when playing the character. When asked how he felt about working with such great actors as John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons, he said that they were brilliant actors and they are and continue to be an inspiration to him as an actor. Ed is also an avid gamer and provides the voice in the upcoming video game for Eragon. he then talked about the challenges for him in the second film of the trilogy. For three weeks before principal photography of the first chapter, he trained in the gym and took lessons in horse riding and swordsmanship. However, Ed took it all in stride when he said that he enjoys training and working out. That's an important aspect, he confirmed, because all that training and experience in the first movie will serve him well in the second. Fans regaled him with applause with that comment. After principal photography is finished, he will vacation with his friends in Jamaica and take a well-deserved break from his hectic schedule. He is desperate to see the movie in December 2006 as are a multitude of fans around the world. Ed ended the panel by saying he hopes to continue doing more stories of the Eragon mythology.
