While Sony discovered that hackers had broken into their Playstation Network on April 19, it wasn't until nearly a week later that the company understood the full scope of the breach, a Sony official tells Kotaku.
The company learned that customer data was stolen on Monday, only after an outside security firm conducted days of forensic analysis, Sony said.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal publicly questioned today Sony's failure to "immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections."
The letter, written to Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton, echoes the concerns of Playstation Network members who have been increasingly bothered by the lack of information from Sony.
Speaking to Kotaku tonight, SCEA spokesman Patrick Seybold explained the apparent delay in notifying customers.
"There's a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers' data being compromised," Seybold said. "We learned there was an intrusion April 19th and subsequently shut the services down.
"We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly this afternoon."
About 4 p.m. Eastern Tuesday, Sony started notifying their Playstation Network members that private data including names, addresses and perhaps passwords were stolen from Sony's database. The company doesn't believe credit card data was stolen, but isn't positive it is secure.

Sony is not going to go down...the video game section of Sony is a small part

This will hurt the Gaming Division of Sony & thats it. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. I wonder if Sony will end up canceling some games if they lose that much money ?

Still, 24 billion dollars is crazy.

I hate hackers, I really do. Why cant these idiots just get normal jobs like the rest of us and not sit in front of there computers thinking how to steal other peoples hard earned money. I will admit sony isnt the best company but the hackers inadvertinely screwed us over too. The real loosers in this are gamers. It will be interesting to see what sony does, mean while have a bunch of xbox friends crowing right now, funny I didnt hear any of them bashing ps3 this much until this incident.

I lost my debit cards weeks ago and had it replaced with a new one. Reading what happened, that ended up being a blessing in disguise.

Hope everyone moves quick and protects their stuff.

Sony...:csad:

but having your debit cards is minor compared to having your information

The Playstation Network could return from its forced downtime with a number of heavily requested new features.
If the rumours are to be believed then Sony are aiming to try and get users back on side by offering features like cross-game chat and in-game video chat among others.
An Engadget forum poster claiming to be a Sony employee had the following to say;
"As we are rebuilding the network, we are taking into consideration in implementing features such as cross game chat and in-game video chat to name a few," they wrote on the site in response to user queries about the PSN down time.
"I cannot confirm any new features at this time but expect a massive update when the network is restored."
Of course this is all just pure rumour with no official word from Sony however the member has been posting reliable information regarding Sony for the past few months so there might be something to it.

They might add cross game chat to try to calm gamers down after being hacked ? It took getting hacked to add cross game chat ? That would be sad on an epic proportion if true

not really...just seemed like something that was in the works and may have even had a release date that hadnt been published and then this happened and Sony pushed up the date

Calm down guys, this will cause some major problems for Sony, but it won't sink their gaming division. This might ensure though, that Sony will go this entire generation without pulling anything resembling a profit.

Those strict internet regulations Nintendo has are starting to look pretty enticing.

We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption. As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events this weekend across our game portfolio, including a Double Station Cash day on Saturday, April 30th. We are also working on a “make good” plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums.

So are they going to charge DC Universe Online players MORE on Double Cash Day ?

Where does it say they are charging more? The Double Cash day sounds cool for those who are playing DCUO on PC. Wonder what they will do for Sony players?.

Whoever did this was most likely the sterotypical nerd. Living in their damn moms basement with no life!

Why are PC players getting stuff when they have had no problems ? Lets see hackers hack their stuff

So do you guys think Sony will stick with a free network service or will this event force them to look at a subscription plan to boost up their security?

Expect an XBOX Live type of Subscription for their next Console. You can almost bet it on it after this. It is to late to do it now & that will just scare current customers away. But expect it next generation for Sony

They'll probably be looking at a subscription plan, if for no other reason than to recoup some of their legal fees. :funny:

Don't know much about fraud, but is it possible for people with their credit card info to 'steal' their own money, blame sony, and get away with it?

PR suicide especially after this to start a subscription fee. It will be on the PS4

Yeah, I think it was a given even before this...that the PS4 would have paid subscription plans. It was just a genie that was already out of the bottle that prevents them from making the move on the PS3.

Sony found out they were hacked on the 19th? Didn't wait until the 22nd or 23rd to tell us that?

Stocks have closed at $28.93, as opposed to $29.71 at opening time, which amounts to a loss of $780191.14 during today alone. And by the look of things, the snowball tumbling down hill ain’t gonna stop anytime soon.
