I'm willing to bet they knew about it. And in regards to compensate... two weeks should be added back to our PS+ time.

Regardless, I'm not renewing.

I wonder if Sony is going to continue to say they are now unhackable after the update & after not being unhackable the first time

I'd bet on it. "We are now SUPER unhackable!"

Sony's then once again promptly hacked.

The last time I backed up my PS3 was last summer. I think this ordeal has inspired me to go do another one either tonight or tomorrow. Im gonna prep my PS3 for that and get it done, just in case

Sony released a very detailed description of what happened:

Fortuantely for me my cc info is not saved on my account bc for whatever reason it wont allow me to purchae anymore. Thank god that fluke is turning out to be a good thing for me now

Well phooey. I checked my balance too, nothing has been purchased that I haven't bought. But I reported my card lost to be on the safe side. So that takes care of that.

I don´t have a PS3, i have a PSP, and i used my credit card some time ago, but guess what, that same credit card was cancelled some months ago for other reasons, so, steal it away :D

IMO, Sony is fu***d.....really fu***d.
The all annon/Geohot crap made the nerds angry, so, they will be attacked left and right until kingdom come.
I really hope i´m wrong, but what is going on doesn´t make it look good.
Sony really needs to put the FBI on the case or the PSN will be a frightening place.

I didn't know that Sony claimed that the PS3 is/was unhackable but for obvious reasons someone took that as a challenge and succeeded:csad::o....

Yikes. Sony really just can't catch a break this generation, can they? Sad that the bad peoples have had to go and ruin it for the rest of us. All that talk of the PS3 beating the 360 software-wise this year, this totally undermines all of it.

It sounds like there wasn't much the guys could do about it though.

Okay, so let's assume that credit card info is okay. What's the worst scenario that could happen with the rest of that stolen information?

Wow, what a butthead. Sony was just trying to make SURE people weren't violated security-wise, and this guy has the absolute balls to just say that Sony was being irresponsible with giving us this info (which, they kinda, were, but still) first-hand. Sounded like Sony only just found out about this, thus why they were so late in telling us this info. Fortunately, guys like me who don't have their credit card info on their PSN accounts are fine; they just need to change their password once PSN's back up. Either way, this Senator was 95% in the right here, but there was no need to write Sony a friggen' letter. That's the users' job!

from what I read, different states have different laws. Some states require that authorities be informed before consumers, in the event of something like this happening. The gov is only looking at things from CT's end but not every state operates like his. Its not like Sony was doing nothing for almost a week. They were runing a thorough investigation and said something once they got the okay to do so.

Spam email...I guess? I mean, I don't know what else they can do with my name and address, really. Identity theft, maybe? The credit card information is the worse of it. Thankfully, I've never wanted to use a credit card on PSN. I always opt to get PSN cards.

Could Identity theft happen with just your name and address, though? Or does the credit card information pretty much seal the deal?

Playstation Plus members SHOULD have they're memberships extended for however long this things lasts. If it lasts another two weeks, then all that time should be extended. That's a given.

Sony is looking worse the longer this lasts. I can't feel sorry for them, but I do for us PS3 owners. It's just hard for me to feel bad for them in a scenario where they're supposed to be able to prevent this.

AOTS just mentioned the hack. Watch yourselves on there, kiddies.

Well, Sony did take a few days to inform us that PSN was down because of "external intrusion", didn't they?

If they're argument is that they wanted to make sure that the PSN didn't just implode on itself on it's own, I guess that would make sense. It'd make them look bad too, though. They probably sat on the information of the breach for sometime, most likely. Probably.

If it really took Sony this long to figure out it was this bad, then they're incompetent. Considering how pathetic I've heard they're encryptions are on some sites, I suppose that's possible. If they figured it out days ago, and have simply been going through meetings and gameplans with lawyers on how they should go at this legally, then they sort of tossed consumers under the bus by not giving us as quick a heads up as possible. Either way, it's not a pretty picture.

Per Engadget:

Update 2: Sony UK is shedding more light on just what data has been exposed, and frankly we were happier when it was dark. By the sound of things, everything Sony had about you has been accessed. There's a full list after the break, so only click on through if you dare.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Here's what Sony UK indicates was exposed:

Name
Shipping address
Billing address
Country
E-mail address
Birthdate
PSN/Qriocity ID
PSN/Qriocity password
PSN/Qriocity security question and answer
Purchase history

Ironically most of them would be more concerned about their PSN ID password than their own personal address info.

with name and address identity thefters can do alot

This is scary stuff, possibly company ruining if a lawsuit is brought against them.

I haven't logged onto PSN in years. I logged on back in 2008 to download camo patterns for Metal Gear Solid 4 and to play a few games of Metal Gear Online.

Should I be concerned?

If ur credit card wasnt saved then no. Considering you say 2008, Im guessing any card you did use would be expired by now anyway

shoot, i need to check on this, especially the credit card info

again you guys are worried about the wrong things...yeah CC info is bad to have out there but a seasoned Identity Thefter can use your info to apply for a credit card and charge a bunch of stuff to your credit rating

Well I guess I better cancel my debit card I used and get a new one. And also change my password on my PSN account.
