Error Code (aka The Great PSN Easter Outage of 2011)

Problem is that Sony can't be focusing on things like new interfaces right now, can it? Surely they're just pushing the technical side of this and using old assets to speed things up.

Though if they did relaunch with a much smoother system, it'd be quite a nice surprise. Trouble is they could have always just relaunched PSN more securely and then worried about the aesthetics once people were playing online again. If they decided to make the decision to do something while PSN is off that they could do while it's on, they're taking more flak every day by choice. Seems to suggest to me that they're not going to do anything like that.

I think they might as well do it, even if it means a little bit more of downtime. I would imagine that as complicated a job as rebuilding PSN would be, making it look differently would be relatively easy. I don't know that for sure, though. But, I would imagine that'd be the case.

And I'm thinking that Sony would be better off making it look different, to win back some good will. Or to atleast try and impress PS3 owners.

As hard as Sony's been getting hit by everyone lately, I don't think PSN being just rebuilt under the hood would be enough for most people. I think some kind of makeover is called for. I think it looking differently would make it an easier sell for Sony.

yeah I can see sometime this week online play coming back up then youll start seeing updates for certain games available then may 31 you be able to download dlc with codes and redeem stuff and have full access to the psn. This entire issue will resolved before E3. I just wish this hacker group would give it up and go back to whatever basement they crawled out of. by hacking the PSN network again what do you really accomplish?

I think you're being very optimistic. I certainly hope you're right, though. But, I think Sony is tempering expectations now since they couldn't make they're self-appointed deadline last week.

This has probably been said already, but the Playstation Company should honestly give us more than an sincere apology whenever the network is back up and running, they should give out free game downloads or something. I know it's unlikely, but it's been down for quite a while, and it's a huge burden. If it was down for a weekend or week, that's one thing, but this has gone on for long enough.

Well, they're planning on giving us a choice of two PS3 games out of five, and I think two or three psp games as well. Playstation Plus might be a moot point, since I hear that whatever free downloads we'll get through that will be locked out when PS Plus access ends.

I...I don't really know what they could do to "fix" things, really. The first thing they need to do is stop the bleeding, and get PSN back up. Then, go from there and win back the people. But PSN still being down is kinda a huge gaping wound for them.

Those 2 PS3 games better be fricking good. I mean Portal or Little Big Planet good. :\\

Exactly Troy, if they do give us games, they should give us a decent selection. Just sayin...

Dear Anonymous: karma is a b****. :lmao:

In a nutshell, there's a veritable guestbook of all the people who participated in the DDOS attacks against Sony. Everyone who was involved now has their IP address published on the internet here, and these addresses can be used to identify and locate just about everyone involved in the DDOS attacks-- which could include the people who hacked into PSN (although that's a bit of a longshot, since hackers who are that crafty probably have some kind of IP mask in that place). Even if the PSN breachers can't be found through the list, it's still wholly possible that someone on that list will squeal like a little piggy when the lawmen knock on their door looking for answers. 'tis a good day for justice, friends. :awesome:

If this is true, PLEASE let the FBI nail and fry them. I will be more than satisfied if the bastards go to jail

Why can't any free downloadable games be of our choice & not what Sony picks ? If Sony picks it then it will be cheap & not wanted

Because giving 78 million people 2 free games that cost 60 bucks apiece because you got hacked by some *****e bags is stupid.

The anon news is awesome Tim.

Just saw this.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) says Sony's response to the recent data breach and service disruption on PSN and other Sony networks "could serve as a model for other companies facing similar criminal hacking."

In a statement, Blumenthal praised Sony's promised offering of identity theft protection services to those involved as a "strong first step toward protecting millions of consumers whose personal and financial information has been compromised."

"While I continue to believe that Sony should have warned users earlier, I am pleased they are providing protective measures including an insurance policy to cover identity theft harms to consumers within a 12-month window -- but I would hope Sony would extend coverage over a longer time on a case-by-case basis if necessary," he continued.

The Senator also said Sony's network breach is part of the larger trend of cybercrime and "a reminder that our laws and data security resources must keep pace with advancing technology."

Blumenthal, along with the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, was among those demanding answers from Sony in the wake of the breach, and commended the company for its detailed response to congressional questioning.

Many PSN customers and observers were upset that Sony waited nearly a week after first learning of the attack on PSN before first alerting users they were at risk.

Sony said it needed that time to fully determine the extent of the data breach, and that releasing information prematurely "could cause confusion and lead [users] to take unnecessary actions if the information was not fully corroborated by forensic evidence."

That will just give people more things to complain about. Even after this is all done & forgotten

Because Sony is a business and they need to make money. It's not like they can go giving away brand new top-shelf releases for free, let alone ones that are published by third parties. Be glad that they are actually giving you two free games, let alone that they are letting you pick them from a list of 5 (4 if you are a PSP user). They could have just said "a month of free PSN+ for everyone is enough." Not to mention the complimentary identity theft protection enrollments they are giving out.

they cant just let any game on there be free. They can for their own first party titles, but they cant do that for 3rd party publishers. Its alot easier and simpler to eat up the costs for their own games but with other titles, they would have to pay the publishers the money they arent getting from the consumer. Thats why this will be a predetermined selection of a few games and not a free for all on any game thats on the store. Less variables/companies to have to worry about

Good! Send them all to a federal pound me in the ass prison. I haven't been able to fully enjoy the extent my copy of Portal 2 since I purchased ages ago.

Plus, I've actually been craving to jump back on DCU even though it probably has a dead community. :o

Gamestop is selling PS3s for $100 off...to a special few GameStop's Power-Up Rewards members

The program is a pretty good deal if you're a frequent shopper. I don't see Gamestop as "the devil" like some people, mostly because I use to get an employee discount for working at a particular retail book store on top of my Power-Up Rewards.

Good times were had, boy I tell you what.

if anyone comes across the code and doesnt need it...I'll be your best friend

I'm not glad about the free games, and won't be until I see what's offered. I still think the free month of PS Plus is a joke, too.

But, I can't think of anyway else for Sony to make it up to us. So, whatever.

Considering that PSN is free, yeah they can make it up to us. They just need to do a lot of ass kissing. And I do mean A LOT.

I just saw Gamepro's link to the comparison of Annoynmous versus Sony, and how it resembles "one of the greatest films of the 1990's...Hackers".

That article was just...badly put together.

They are saving this until E3. Then watch it go down a few minutes later after they turn it on due to heavy traffic

Yeah, i agree that the new PSN will be unveiled at E3.

On other news...

I´m starting to believe that Sony was nothing more than a scapegoat in all of this.
There is no report of anyone having their personnal info used, no credit card being used; and now a "civil war" among anonymous.
There is also the report from Sony that anon was behind the attack, and they keep saying that they didn´t do it.

My theory is that, the one attacking anonymous is the same that attacked Sony, and they only did it to put the blame on anon because of the all Anon vs Sony debocle, that´s why there was info planted inside Sony´s server that it was anon´s doing.
It doesn´t make any sense that skillfull hackers would left traces on Sony´s servers.
If i´m right, this all crap is not Hackers vs Sony but really Anonymous vs "Anonymous rogue", which in turn makes the PSN users more at ease, i don´t believe their info will ever be used, no one is after them.
