Eternals Eternals at the Box Office

Pre-sales stalled after the fast start even before the reviews so those 100m predictions were a pipedream I guess

The ceiling was probably something like 85m. In that context, 71m isn't that bad
Its guaranteed sequel for most films.

Anyone know the budget for Eternals?

161M WW opening, second-best worldwide opening during the pandemic apparently. I'm not sure what's #1 though.

Edit: F9 is still #1 with 163M it seems. Black Widow did 158M.

It was always expected to open to a big number because of the Marvel name. The second week drop will probably be ugly.

We'll see next week but I have a feeling international audiences are liking the film more.

Sure, but correct me if I’m wrong but Hollywood generally takes a less of the cut from the foreign box office then they do from the domestic and while there have been movies that have done badly domestic and did better internationally, those all been times when China(the second biggest box office market in the world) was in the mix. This movie doesn’t have China to boost the international intake, and even then studios only take about 25% of the grosses they made in the Middle Kingdom. Domestic is really where they make the money and should this film suffer the worst drop-off for a Marvel film despite being a theaters only release and the Covid situation being more contained, that would be pretty bad, imo. It already has the worse reviews/word of mouth of this franchise’s entire thirteen year existence. So forgive if I come across as a negative Nancy but I’m not terribly optimistic for this film’s overall box office run.

The difference between domestic and foreign box office split (between the studio and the theaters) isn't that big I think (except when we're talking about China). Around 45% goes to the studio in international markets. Might be even more in the case of Disney.

Marvel Studios brand still carries a lot of weight at the theaters. All things considered this was not the worst case scenario, but we'll see how it does in later weeks.

This movie will definitely adhere to the 45 day theatrical run and then probably will hit D+ soon after.

The fact that they didn't do Shang-Chi on Disney+ after 45 days and try like a premium release maybe at a lower rate tells me the whole Premium Access thing is not this pie in the sky it's made out to be.

Fwiw my 11:30 matinee showing had maybe 40 people, which is a solid number based on my trips to the theater at this time slot for other films.

71M OW. That's a pretty solid post-pandemic result.
Also taking into account the "lukewarm" critical reception.

Black Widow - 80M OW (- D+)
Shang-Chi - 75M OW
Eternals - 71M OW

Yeah I think they scrapped the PA method. But they still want D+ to be the only way you can see Disney movies so I do think they’ll put it on there sooner rather than later. They waited a little while longer (than the 45 day minimum) for Shang-Chi so they could capitalize on their Disney+ Day event.

Ok at least in a similar ballpark to the others. Was worried the reception might have more of an effect.

Good. Hopefully the numbers have shown them that there is still a point to a theatrical window.

It really isn't.

I wonder if they regretted doing that to Black Widow after seeing the numbers that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings got at the boX office.

The fact that Shang-Chi wasn't even out on streaming after 6 weeks tells me they did.
Isn't that the highest grossing of the film of the year as well in North America right now?:applaud

Also, if Shang-Chi was uploaded to disney+ servers 45 days after its theaterical release, crystal 4k copy would have been leaked everywhere, which could lower the over all boX office numbers.

Indeed. Also, if Eternals had Premiere Access, IMHO there's no way it has a $160 million global opening weekend.

More like the logical conclusion that Premium Access only really works with a dual release, and not as a on demand type service after a bit of theatrical exclusivity.

Personally I still think Black Widow brought in more money for Disney than Shang-Chi (people are always comparing the box office but conveniently leaving out the PA money that BW made). But a lot of that has to do with Black Widow being a popular character and at the time, people were starving for a MCU blockbuster after 2 years.

Or it doesn't work period.
