Exclusive Interview: DIRECTOR JON FAVREAU TELLS THE SECRETS OF HIS IRON MAN

The Overlord said:
When Jon said he was going with technology based villains, I wonder if that means either Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man? Because I think the best route would be to make Justin Hammer the main villain, have him steal Stark's Iron Man specs, which he uses to copy Iron Man's design and create his own armour called the "Crimson Dynamo". Hammer creates a prototype and hires an ex KGB Russian merc to pilot it and test it, berfore mass producing them. So Iron Man would have two villains to deal with the brains (Hammer) and the brawn (Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man).

Did you just completely rip off my post?? Haha.

I wasnt too sure about this choice of director, not because i dont believe he can do the job well but because I hadnt seen any of his work to my knowledge. But after the past few days reading what he's been saying about this film, im quite excited he sounds like he really knows how to bring this film to life correctly!!!!!

After watching his interviews over at iesb.net, I have to agree with several posts that he is really in tune with the fans and is open to listening to what we Iron Man fans have to say, its very refreshing and gets me even more excited for Iron Man.
As for the villians, I agree RedintheBlue, Justin Hammer/Obidah Stane would make alot of sense to be the main villain with either Crimson Dynamo,Titanium Man, Ghost or Spymaster as henchmen.

It was a good interview. Favreau seems to get what the fans want, something real, no-nonsense, but not really brooding, that looks at the history of the character and picks what´s best for the movie adaptation. Since MSJ I hadn´t seen a director so open to the fans of a comic book movie franchise.

Oh yeah. But please don't add in Robocop-like movement and speech in Iron Man.

That was the only thing in the interview that worried me. He talked about Iron Man's movments and then mentioned RoboCop. I really hope he's not going to make him have RoboCop style movments.

yeah, other than the RoboCop comparison, i really dug what he had to say.

No I didn't, I thought of that like a year ago and you posted while I was writing my post.

My pick would be a Justin Hammer/Spymaster combo. Spymaster did work with Hammer in the comics, in addition to having the coolest name and costume out of Iron Man's villains. He's mysterious and, in the hands of someone as good a storyteller as Favreau, capable of greatness and depth.

"Crimson Dynamo" is sort of a so-so name, "Titanium Man" is just dumb sounding.

Who said the villains have to be called that?? You could just have Justin Hammer naming them the "Crimson model" or the "Titanium model."

I like Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man, both would make excellent villians to face off against Iron Man.

I saw the interview this morning, I am loving what I'm hearing, he seems to be interested in staying true to the character. It's a great interview.

Agree, I'm just glad they're keeping that Ultimate crap away from this project!

I love how the guy is so open with fans about the project. He's out here and he's talking about it and created blogs and discussion forums to get fan feedback. The fanboy's opinion is vital in a comic book movie, so it's nice to see that he's really paying attention to it. Wish more directors were like that.

Yeah that's true.

And just to clarify things, on his myspace forum, Favreau himself said they are STARTING FROM SCRATCH and there is no script yet.

That is AWESOME news.

So basically, that means the Gough, Millar, and Hayter drafts we were so worried about are GONE.

So does this mean no more "Howard Stark" as the villain?

In the words of Vincent Valentine:

"One would think."

I am really looking forward to what Jon has in store for Iron Man. I have always thought of him as a talented guy. Hopefully he can handle a project this big.

According to Favreau no, NO Howard Stark as the villain.

SO

SIGH OF RELIEF!

HALLELUJAH!

Sounds cool not sure about the Robo Cop comment.

It looks as if Favreau has the right attitude and the right idea of where this movie will be coming from. I'm glad to see this.
I hope he gets the chance to read our previous posts.
He would find much to give him direction there.
As we pointed out in those, If the Stark/Iron-Man origin comes out of the Vietnam war, he would have to be at least 50 in the current calendar. He would have been around 18-20 if he had been in Vietnam during the war.
So, unless most of this movie gets set in the late '70's (through flashbacks or exclusively during that time period) Favreau will have a big problem with the Vietnam War-based origin using a youngish actor if the movie is based in the current time stream without flashbacks (unless they use an actor like Tom Selleck).
There were a whole series of stories using AIM/HYDRA as the villian where Stark spent a good bit of time, effort and resources trying to keep his public technologies from being stolen (industrial espionage) and an equal amount of time using the Iron-Man (non-public tech) to recover and stop them. Aim/HYDRA would work well without resorting to replicating the armor (Crimson/Titanium whatevers). This is supposed to be a unique one-of-a-kind technology that sets it apart from everything else. They can save the replicated armor for a sequel waaayyy down the line.
AIM/HYDRA would be plausible to many more people, thanks to the similarity to SPECTRE in the Bond movies. It would give them an organization that can have many different bad guy leaders with succeeding years that Stark can be in a continual battle with.
(Of course, AIM/HYDRA was the across the board villian in a lot of the Marvel titles then. Captain America and Nick Fury spent a lot of time fighting them too.
There is much to look forward to. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope they come up with a real gem.

i'm really excited about this now!!! About the robocop thing i think he meant the feel. At the time and my age it felt real and plausible adn super cool. i don't think he meant actual movement.
