Title: Punisher MAX Vol. 1: In the Beginning
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artists: Leandro Fernandez & Goran Parloy
Publisher: Marvel MAX
Following his critically acclaimed "Preacher" run, Garth Ennis finds himself jumping back into yet another critically acclaimed series, one that he's very familiar with. Punisher MAX is a relaunch of the classic Marvel character The Punisher, but there's one big change, this series is geared towards mature readers. Before, The Punisher had some mature themes, it pushed the envelope from time to time, Ennis had wanted to do so much more with the character, but couldn't. That is, untill now. Under the Marvel MAX imprint, Ennis can do whatever he wants with The Punisher, because it's geared towards mature readers and he's done just that. He follows his own continuity & has a distinct vision of what he wants this series to pan out as in the long run, and judging from Preacher, we're in for a treat.
Vol. 1 In the Beginning is the first arc in this updated on going of The Punisher. Vol. 1 is a Trade Paperback (TPB) collection of the first 6 issues of the Punisher MAX on going series. It marks the return of classic Punisher ally, Microchip. This arc starts off with Ennis's version of The Punisher's origin. Shortly there after we get to see The Punisher (a.k.a. Frank Castle) as the destructive vigilante he really is, from tearing apart enemies with heavy machine guns, to going out and making the world sane, you can truly see Ennis's vision come to life. The story centers around two CIA agents, O'Brien & Roth who're trying to capture Castle. Filled with vivid story telling, witty dialogue, and eye catching art. If you've even somewhat been interested in The Punisher character or Ennis's take on said character, i'd advise picking up this TPB, just to test the waters on how much you can stomach of this no holds barred take on the classic Marvel character.
Format: This TPB is from an Ongoing series entitled "Punisher MAX". There's currently 4 other TPB's out, with more on the way and each collect a specific arc. It's a monthly series, I reviewed the TPB, but they also sell hard cover collections. The first hard cover, contains the first two arcs of the series & contains the first 12 issues of the series, and a MAX special entitled "The End". In comic book format the series is currently up to issue 34.
