FX's The Americans

I was affected more than I should with what happened to [blackout]Hans[/blackout].

Tonight's episode made think how blissful it must be to be living in Paige land.

I finally caught up. Incredible. This is the best show on television. It just keeps getting better and better which I don't really see.

Watched the first 2 eps. There's something up with the woman (Andrea from the Walking Dead) that Stan is dating; either she's a plant for the FBI, or working for the Russians.

Agreed. I think she might be CIA and tied to the op they are running on Arkady. I suspect she's not KGB as you have to think thAt Peter and Elizabeth would be aware of a KGB op being run on their neighbor.

What I find particularly interesting is the switch of perspective in this season. In the past seasons Peter and (later) Elizabeth have doubted the Russian government. It seemed to be setting up to them defecting or quitting. But now, the American government is really being painted in a negative light, between the plot to destroy wheat crops and the op being run on Arkady (who is becoming one of the most compelling characters). It's a fascinating shift in perspective and makes me question what end game is being built to, in the sense that we know the Soviets lose the Cold War. Do the writers intend to present the Soviet Union as tragic heroes?

Whatever happens, the last season could be where their private and professional lives become inseparable. I don't want to invest too much into what I think, but this is a possibility given where it started in season one and where we are now. I could see it being them against both sides.

Who was that woman in the car at the end of the latest episode that Philip spoke to?

[blackout]Martha [/blackout] :(

We haven't seen her before but she seems to be their lookout.

I'm so glad I wasn't spoiled on her return - my jaw just dropped. I'm also glad because it'll no doubt give Oleg something to do. I'd hate to have his story kinda shortchanged like Nina was.

Yeah that was a pleasant surprise. I wonder if he even knows what [blackout]she looked like. But he helped oversaw her transfer, right?[/blackout]

ETA: Sorry I edited it too late. Figured I'd put it in spoiler tag.

Yeah, [BLACKOUT]I wouldn't mind seeing more of Martha if they can find a way to use her, especially if Oleg comes into it. But I'm pretty sure her story is over. That was a nice little bonus just to let us know how she's doing.[/BLACKOUT]

Phillip and Liz should probably start paying more attention to who Henry is talking to. Let's not forget what happened with Jared.

Yeah, I got a feeling Henry might already be turned. Since season three when he was talking to Stan.

My favorite plot point in this show, and there's a ton of subtly horrifying moments in this show too.

I'm always amazed at how this show just can tighten the noose around the Jennings, Stan etc. ever so incrementally each ep. Just great tension from lurking threats.

Current theory going around is that Henry is a phreaker.

Henry is so going to bring about their downfall. :D

Poor Philip :(, he's about to have a mental breakdown.

Poor Philip, for the KGB keeping him away from his son.

I know I'm invested when I find Elizabeth's offer to do the killing alone from now on to spare Phililp totally romantic, lol.

You could pinpoint the exact moment that Gabriel broke Mischa's heart.

Loving the dichotomy of Oleg having to hunt down Russians for doing whatever they can to make life a bit easier for themselves, and then coming home to his parents literally giving him, like a buffet of women. Plus whenever they hang the "son's in Afghanistan" over the people they press, man...it must tear Oleg apart.

This was the best episode yet. That last scene gave me chills.

You can already tell this is the best season and we're only five episodes in. This show is absolutely masterful.

the latest episode might as well have been called.

It's not as bad as when they had to put that girl into a suitcase in S2 iirc. Because of how the show is, I think we forget some of the violent (whether it be psychically or physically) things Philip and Elizabeth have done. But the tolls of doing something like that, manipulating assets and ruining their lives, have no doubt weighed and hurt Philip, and we kinda already had a bit of a breaking point last season, so I'm interested to see when Philip will kinda break again.
