HBO hasn't done their little Year's End video yet, have they? Usually there's a few seconds of GOT footage in there...

EDIT: S***, nevermind. Found it.

Yes they have... there's like half a second of new footage that really isn't even worth looking at. Dany, Ramsay, and Cersei I believe.

Doubt it, the battle at Blackwater was different from the books, for example they had Stannis himself attacking the wall and slaughtering Lannister men, so you should expect the same with seeing Jon Snow vanquishing foes with his sword instead of tactical warfare.

It's more generic but gives audiences a clear idea of good vs. evil.

I did miss the ambiguity of the guy lifting his sword, the blade glowing brighter, as the Lord o' Bones burned. Hard times all over.

Martin talks about Winds of Winter:

Having said all that, I know what the next question will be, because hundreds of you have already asked it of me. Will the show 'spoil' the novels?

Maybe. Yes and no. Look, I never thought the series could possibly catch up with the books, but it has. The show moved faster than I anticipated and I moved more slowly. There were other factors too, but that was the main one. Given where we are, inevitably, there will be certain plot twists and reveals in season six of GAME OF THRONES that have not yet happened in the books. For years my readers have been ahead of the viewers. This year, for some things, the reverse will be true. How you want to handle that... hey, that's up to you. Look, I read Andy Weir's novel THE MARTIAN before I saw the movie. But I saw the BBC production of JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR NORRELL before I finally got around to reading Susanna Clarke's novel. In both cases, I loved the book and I loved the adaptation. It does not need to be one or the other. You might prefer one over the other, but you can still enjoy the hell out of both.

Of course, there's an aspect to our situation that did not apply to either the Weir or Clarke cases. Those novels were finished before they were optioned, adapted, and filmed. The case of GAME OF THRONES and A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE is perhaps unique. I can't think of any other instance where the movie or TV show came out as the source material was still being written. So when you ask me, "will the show spoil the books," all I can do is say, "yes and no," and mumble once again about the butterfly effect. Those pretty little butterflies have grown into mighty dragons. Some of the 'spoilers' you may encounter in season six may not be spoilers at all... because the show and the books have diverged, and will continue to do so.

IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN ALL FIVE SEASONS AND READ ALL FIVE BOOKS, STOP HERE!

Just consider. Mago, Irri, Rakharo, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Pyat Pree, Pyp, Grenn, Ser Barristan Selmy, Queen Selyse, Princess Shireen, Princess Myrcella, Mance Rayder, and King Stannis are all dead in the show, alive in the books. Some of them will die in the books as well, yes... but not all of them, and some may die at different times in different ways. Balon Greyjoy, on the flip side, is dead in the books, alive on the show. His brothers Euron Crow's Eye and Victarion have not yet been introduced (will they appear? I ain't saying). Meanwhile Jhiqui, Aggo, Jhogo, Jeyne Poole, Dalla (and her child) and her sister Val, Princess Arianne Martell, Prince Quentyn Martell, Willas Tyrell, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Lord Wyman Manderly, the Shavepate, the Green Grace, Brown Ben Plumm, the Tattered Prince, Pretty Meris, Bloodbeard, Griff and Young Griff, and many more have never been part of the show, yet remain characters in the books. Several are viewpoint characters, and even those who are not may have significant roles in the story to come in THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING.

GAME OF THRONES is the most popular television series in the world right now. The most pirated as well. It just won a record number of Emmy Awards, including the ultimate prize, for the best drama on television. It's an incredible production with an incredible cast and crew.

WINDS OF WINTER should be pretty good too, when it comes out. As good as I can make it, anyway.

Which is a long way of saying, "How may children did Scarlett O'Hara have?"

Enjoy the show. Enjoy the books.

Meanwhile, I'll keep writing. Chapter at a time. Page at a time. Word at a time. That's all I know how to do.

"so......... when can we expect The Winds of Winter?"

In all honesty, probably some time after the show is completed.
It's okay: I have plenty of distractions to attend to, in addition to the show.

I'm pretty the series finale of the show will have aired before Winds of Winter comes out

If the idea was to have Winds of Winter coming before March 2016, we should atleast hope for a 2016 launch.

Was anyone honestly expecting Book 6 to be out by the time the new season starts? I've been hoping for 2016, but I doubt it hits before Fall.

that is like 3 years away. it will be out before season 7.
Based on? I can't believe anyone really thought it would hit before the new season. That felt too much like a dream.

based on nothing... if he had set deadlines for Halloween and New Years, he's clearly almost done with it. So another year and 3 months... I'm just assuming he'd be done by then?

But Winds being released AFTER the series finale seems quite foolish given hes been setting deadlines 3 years prior lol

Too be fair, this is exactly how it has gone with all the books post ASOS. It took him 11 years to write the 4th book, which he split in two and in the end made very little progress. So he has spun his wheels for a while.

Either way, I guess it's up to the show to show y'all that R+L = D! ;)

His blogpost stated he's not working towards a deadline anymore. He will be done when he is done.

I mean, if you really think he's going to wait until the series is over to release Winds of Winter, thats your thing man. I just don't see it being that far off.

Depends on if he trashes a part of the book again or not. He apparently did that multiple times with ADWD. The way he describes how the writing is going, I could totally see him not writing another relevant word over the next year. It wouldn't be the first time. But maybe the book hits later in 2016. You just can't tell with GRRM.

"so......... when can we expect The Winds of Winter?"

"I won't make excuses. There are no excuses," Martin said in a post on his LiveJournal. "No one else is to blame. Not my editors and publishers, not HBO, not [Game of Thrones showrunners] David [Benioff] & Dan [Weiss]. It's on me. I tried, and I am still trying."

The author went on to say he's not sure when it will be done or published, noting he's still months away, "and that's if the writing goes well." Martin also said he has no intention of setting another deadline for himself "to trip over."

With Game of Thrones' sixth season set to premiere in April, Martin's publishers initially wanted the manuscripts from Martin before the end of October, as everyone wanted the sixth book to be released before Season 6 of the TV series. While that "seemed very do-able" to him in May, he wasn't able to make that date. As such, he was then given a new deadline and was told if he could complete Winds of Winter by year's end, it would still be ready for release in March.

That clearly hasn't happened, so Martin has returned to his original stance on the novel's status, saying: "It will be done when it's done.

So we should be getting it sometime between next year and never.

he cares more about his NOT A BLOG than his lifes work lol

I always kind of eyeroll people rushing him and criticizing his pace as though they're his boss or, worse, acting like he could be on death's door.... but I really would appreciate him making this a priority.

he is 67. at the pace he writes... he will be around 80 by the time he finishes... hell could be later than that... So yea the age thing kind of worries people, which is petty as ****, but a legit concern considering all he does is eat popcorn and drink coke all day.

And consider the very real possibility of dementia and or Alzheimer's or any other number of cognitive diseases that can afflict a person the older they get. Him dying of old age isn't the only concern .
