IESB Exclusive: Another Gary Added to the Cast of IRON MAN 2 Written by IESB Staff Tuesday, 07 April 2009
First, Garry Shandling was added to the cast of IRON MAN 2 alongside Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Now, Gary Oldman has been spotted on the set in Los Angeles.

Earlier today we revealed Garry Shandling as Senator Stern in the film from our on set tipster. Now, he's delivered us news of another Gary. Oldman seems to be making a crossover from the Warner Bros./DC Batman and Harry Potter franchises to a Marvel Studios franchise.
Interesting. Oldman has been staying away from villain characters as of late until he was cast as the post-apocalyptic baddie in Book of Eli with Denzel Washington. What will he bring to the IRON MAN 2 cast?

We don't have any character confirmation, but we are hearing he could possibly be Howard Stark, father to Tony, previously rumored to be played by Tim Robbins. But that role is also rumored to be the one filled by Mad Men's John Slattery, who I am HUGE fan of.
It must be a short time on set considering he is in the middle of shooting Book of Eli in New Mexico.
We've reached out to the studio for comment but have yet to hear back.
We shall see!

I have to wonder how Warners/DC will react to Oldman being in another comic book franchise. The last time an actor did that was James Marsden after he was Scott in the X-Men films at Fox he headed over to WB for Superman Returns. And we all know what happend to Scott in the next film, it was curtains for him in the first 20!

Sorry about my dupe thread, we were evidently posting at the same time.

But, still, WTF?!?! :wow:

your threads better :o

I kid, i kid
but yea this news seems to be a huge WTF.. also,i wonder what kind of **** talking Downey is saying to Oldman :hehe:

"Dude, I totally didn't mean anything I said about The Dark Knight, please don't hi-jack my plane!".

He's obviously playing the Mandarin :o

Or Hawkeye :o

Or someone else

He would be an excellent Howard Stark, IMO.

Good for him! He's a really talented actor, and he's gonna bring a lot to any role he gets. Although it will be weird having Marvel and DC's flagship titles both sharing an actor...

Is it possible, though, that he's only visiting the set to say hi?

But, still, WTF?!?! :wow:

Seconded.

Oldman is a very good actor and i'm excited that someone of his talent is on board but as has been said he's also tied to another major comic book franchise.I know Marvel/DC cross over has been done before but it's something i'd personally avoid doing.

If his role is something that stretches beyond IM2 and spills over to other Marvel films then i'm surprised he accepted. I guess it depends on what role he's playing and how he looks.

In a interview with AICN Favreau said the following....

Quint: Well that’s fascinating. That decision right there immediately takes it and gives the movie its own identity and completely takes it out of all the other superhero movies which are still having to deal…the Supermans, the Batmans, Spidermans… They still have to cover their identity, I mean I guess you can look at X-MEN a little bit…

Jon Favreau: A little bit. FANTASTIC FOUR did it in a different way. That was… that made us… we definitely want to do our own version of it. But a lot of our time is spent steering clear of DARK KNIGHT and that franchise. Tonally, casting wise, the way we present the action. Because there’s so many similarities at the core, and now that we were both very successful movies this summer it’s going to be… there’s always going to be the Coke and Pepsi argument going back and forth.

I'm shocked... I mean maybe they'd cast a white guy for Mandarin who knows??? But it is likely that maybe Slattery just isn't playing Howard Stark.

You're shocked that Marvel hired a white guy to play the Mandarin. I'm shocked that they hired a black guy to play Nick Fury. I've been told that this movie exist in the movie-verse. It does not exist in Earth-616 or The Ultimate Universe, but somewhere in between. This movie has failure all over it.

That's crazy. I would've preferred Oldman to solely remain Gordon, but a good role is a good role to him, so I hope it's something prominent.

Still, the Batman fanboy in me is going...

oh b***ches.. now I'm gonna have to watch it

Oldman would be a good Howard Stark. And I gotta say if you don't give Favreau alot of credit as a director you certainly gotta give him credit for making cast decisions that certainly create A LOT of buzz and excitement.

That's a heck of an addition if true. It had been reported that Howard Stark would have a flashback sequence in the film, setting up more backstory for Captain America, showing Stark Industries involvement with the super soldier program.
I'm a big fan of Oldman and love that he may be playing Howard Stark, hope it's true

I'm a bit skeptical on this news.

First, it says that he was spotted on the set. That doesn't necessarily mean he is a part of the movie.

Second, they are speculating now that he maybe playing Howard Stark. The Tim Robbins rumor turned out to be just that, a rumor. So I'm not putting much stock into that, at least not now.

I'll wait until we have an official confirmation before giving a serious reaction.

:facepalm

Marvel has not hired a white guy to play Mandarin. Gary Oldman has only been seen on the set. There has been no confirmation on who he would be playing or if he even has a role in the film. He could have just stopped by to see a friend.
And you're probably right. This movie will certainly fail because of Sam Jackson and Gary Oldman. Get over yourself.
:whatever:

I hear now that Nolan is planning on casting RDJ as the Riddler in his next Batman movie. :hehe:

Favs should get:

Ken Wantanabe(sp) as Mandarin
Liam Neeson as Count Nefaria
Micheal Caine as the real Jarvis in Stark/Avengers Mansion in New York

:woot:
