Gas Utility Problem, Need Some Advice from Home Owners

I use Natural Gas (har har yeah yeah I know) to heat my home etc. I just noticed that the meter is broken because it hasn't changed since last April or May which means I've been getting free gas for almost a year.

Yes while I realize I can just keep quiet, I don't want them to eventually catch on so I'm going to call the Gas Company and tell them that their meter is busted.

Now, there is no way that they can prove how much gas I've used in a year.

So I'm guessing there are 2 scenarios.

Best case, they waive the charges and fix my meter.

Worst case, they prorate my previous usage and come up with a "best guess".

I guess I want to know is if anyone here has encounted this type of problem and what was the result?

Morg, I have these thoughts at different times, that's why they're in different posts.

But yeah, if I know anything about big business, they love giving the little guy a break.

biglankybastard made the point i was going to make--they are estimating the gas they think you used--they have no proof that you actually used it. they do have proof that you didn't--the faulty meter.

at the least, this should be highly negotiable. at the most, you should not have to pay this at all. they are attempting to bill you for something they can't even prove they delivered.

call the #, and tell them now that you are not, under ank kind of circumstances, paying this on your bill, until they can prove that you used that gas.

if, for nothing else, get them to take it off the bill, and have them bill you seperately. if they won't do that, i'd not pay the 'extra' chage, and whatever late fees they rack up.

Best thing to do is get a lawyer to cover your ass, the gas company might even fine you for not reporting it or 'stealing' their gas usage. So do some checking with legal advice on what course you can do

Not really, you can get free legal advice through several programs. Check around.

If the gas company decided to hit you with one big bill can you pay it?

Yeah but they'd still probably break it down in monthly installments. The point is I can argue how it's just me in the house and how I've been conserving as much as I can and that prorating me would probably be more than if the meter was actually working.

I may have some connections through my job but I just wanted to see first if anyone here went through the same thing.

Not sure claiming innocent about conserving as much as you can will work on them, that's why I thought some legal advice might help in case they hit you with fines or one large bill instead of installments.
